Why are people so hard on Hyundai's. 25 to 30 years ago Hyundai were a very new car company and they where learning the car industry (just like every car company had to do when they frist started making cars). It is unfair to judge modern Hyundai's by what they were like 25 or 30 years ago. If you have only expereniced a Hyundai in their earily years and had no experence of the new ones then i feel you can't pass judement on them.
I've never really been a fan of Hyundai cars until when my toyota was in the shop for the recent safety recall an I my insurance company had sent me a rental 2011 Hyundai Sonata,I was really Impressed by the handling, the interior and the engine,the engine really took me by suprise by how much power it had and the amount of MPG's I was seeing, the average(miles per tank)i was getting was around 542 which is amazing considering that i drive 40 miles one way to work an drive a lot in the city!

I got a 2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS 2.4L 4cil and after more than 5000 miles on South West of US I can tell you for true that the real mileage is over the advertised 32MPG on highway . I scored 32.8 MPG on a 490 miles run with A/C on and about 2 hours of stop-and-go in LA traffic [I10 Highway], two adults, empty trunk.
Next round I scored 32.6 MPG with no traffic at all but some heavy winds from side.
The best I scored 33.3 MPG from Sacramento to LA with no traffic, during the night, on I5 Highway.

@kentau123 No actually its real life situations . Remember that police officer and his family that died . They were driving a Lexus and there car accelerated by itself . I thought toyota and lexus sale cars because of their quality and reliability but i dont think so anymore because Toyota every single car like the sienna prius camry rav4 corrolla all had recalls . @globalk100 - I agree completely, I had my camry do it two months after buying it. I will say one thing about toyota that is that there engines maybe reliable if you take care of them but that is all cars, if you take care of them they will last a long time. I've since went back to Subaru because before i bought the toyota I had no problems with Subaru for 20 years an i still have both cars an they both run just great. the new one i bought is much more comfortable then the camry i bought!
Hyundai Kia have virtually got nothing to blame these days, actually the best car money can buy,, but any other choice?

Dude, go check for service bulletins on you model and maybe there is an update for TCM [transmission control module] and no more problems. I updated mine for free @ dealership just for fun even mine is 09 Sonata 2.4L and I have no problems but I found on Hyundai forums that some ppl found big improvements after updating...smoother shifts, better gas mileage...
Give it a try on edmunds.com for service bulletins or just call your local dealer and ask if any updates available.

All i'm trying to say is that there is nothing wrong with the Genesis. Heck, it's not even trying to compete with them! However, i must say that the Genesis feels solid and responsive when driving. I test drove it for fun before I got my Sonata.

Buying this car this weekend. Say what you want about Hyundai, they're definitely not what they used to be and have the best warranties in the business. Plus low-cost maintenance and great fuel economy goes a long way, especially during these economic times. (btw, this cars V6 has more HP than a new 5 series BMW)

Replaced a 2003 Corolla that was totaled wih a 2009 Sonada. Compared to the Corolla ,the Sonada is a better all around vehicle. solidly built and a alot of car for the money. I have the 4 cyl motor and it is peppy and good on gas. Owned it for 8 months, no problems at all. 10 year warranty was also a big selling point. I drove 2009 corolla but it felt flimsy compared to the Sonada. Overall a safe sensible car that I would buy again.
this is a very torquey v6,so even if it is a little short on power,the 10 grand i saved was worth it.not gonna be racing it,has plenty of power to go around.
I convinced my Aunt in switching from Oldsmobile to Toyota, and she has LOVED her '01 Avalon for years now without trouble. Another example, is my Dad whose loved Buicks and Cheverolets all his life, but is now FINALLY getting rid of his '98 Buick Century for an '09 Limited Sonata. Point here folks, we all know the "Big 3" are suffering BADLY...!!! That said, instead of "limiting oneself", give Hyundai a try. I guarantee with the '09 Sonata's MAJOR improvements, they got Toyota & Honda nervous
J.D. Power & Associates, along with Consumer Reports, have rated the Sonata VERY well with regards too saftey & overall reliability. However..."people are people", and its unfortunate, that Hyundai's inital reputation got a bad rap. This said, i just don't think people are ready too "shake" or should i say sway there opinions, in a more positive light on this manufacturer. My whole family, has been GM for years, then i convinced my Aunt a long time Oldsmobile lover to switch too Toyota......
You can get the "Popular Package" on the GLS model with steering wheel mounted controls, tilt/telescope steering, trip computer, and unique exterior/interior trim. More people will be buying foreign cars like Hyundai if GM, Ford, and Chrysler go bankrupt. And for those who want a foreign car built in USA, Sonata is the one!

I Dont understand people that hate hyundai, they probably unhappy with their domestic junk that needs repairs daily, my 01 elantra has been great to me for 8 years and has never needed any kind of repairs, just regular on time maintenance. yeah old 80's early 90's hyundais where junk but today hyundai is way better in reliability than any domestic, thats why the big 3 are begging the gov for help, people today buy asian cars because they are better.
The Hyundai Sonata is a beautiful car in its price range. And most real-world family cars - don't even have a tilt steering wheel. Think Focus, Sunfire, Cavalier...

Hyundai wants to be Toyota, thats why they make cars that are great in their first 3 years of use but after that things just start to Rust, Plastics start to lose all their shine and the engine will start to fail just after the Warranty ends.

Hyundai has continued to gain market share, because they have shown dedication over the last 10 years and improved their cars immensely. Before rebates the base model Sonata is about $785 less than 2009 Camry standard, with rebates it is almost $3,000 less. Stability control is $650 option on the camry, Sonata has it at no extra cost.
The back of the sonota looked like 03-04 accord, now it looks like the 05 accord, cause during there MMC they changed the back like that. Eh, I dont guess they can make nothing for themselves...
Consumer Reports just placed the '09 Sonata as Top Rated. Beat the Corolla. Quality is the same, but Hyundai cant match Toy/Hnda in resale. The Hyundai's depriciate 30% faster than the Toys.
it won't be like that for long, now that hyundai is ramping up quality and style. and besides, if thats true, then i'll be able to get into a used 2009 sonata sooner than i thought :).

If in many years they have done huge kms/miles and are still really reliable like Toyotas are then people will be like hold on a minuite maybe Hyundai's are good. Its the old saying it takes years to build up a good reputation but only minutes to destory it.
I've been driving the sonata since 4th generation; it's consistently been a great line of cars. The 2009 is by far my favourite though.

I always buy Toyota and Hyundai anyway.
And Honda and Toyota are not making luxury cars. They look Luxurious because they are modern. Your used to a luxury car from 98' that's why you think cars like the Sonata are Luxurious.
BTW Hyundai is going to come out with a Luxury brand and they are also trying to develop a look for their cars.

Well i consider any car with leather seats to be trying to push therre car as a luxury car...dueto the fact the leather isn't economical.

Leather seats? My grandfather drives an old Toyota Camry and it had leather.
The reason all new cars are doing whatever they can to be luxurious is because of competition from other car manufactures.
I for one, along with everyone else, am not complaining. It's nice to have a cheap "Luxurious" car like a Sonata.
It great for those that cannot afford a BMW.
If you want a an economy car, then go look at the Yaris
By today's standards, just having leather does not make a car luxurious.

I agree with the unnecessary engine power, but I like my luxury and LOVE my gadgets.
Besides, what type of performance do you want in a family sedan like the Sonata?
My Sonata handles great and I rather have more luxury than a slight performance or MPG improvement.
BTW a V8 Civic is pretty much guarantied next year :P

Cars improve over the years.
My Sonata has a V6 that gives me 247 HP and if you go on long road trips you'd wish you had more power.
No company is going over board, they are just moving with technology.

I agree. I would give up a hundred HP if I got a cheaper price tag and better MPG.
I used to drive my parents old 1997 Toyota Camry that gave me about 121 HP and I was good.
Now I have to careful with the gas pedal. However my Sonata gets better MPG than an old Camry with half the HP.
But, like I said before, gadgets like my blutooth, nav system and heated seats are all things i can't live without.
Also, there are some things like ABS, TCS, ESC and EBA that are all for saftey.

Hyundai's engines are Mitsubishi (and mitsubishi used them about 20 years before) Hyundai's design is Italian and the olny thing that hyundai produces itshelf is the gear box and is really sucks...the conclusions are yours

Buying this car this weekend. Say what you want about Hyundai, they're definitely not what they used to be and have the best warranties in the business. Plus low-cost maintenance and great fuel economy goes a long way, especially during these economic times. (btw, this cars V6 has more HP than a new 5 series BMW)

Replaced a 2003 Corolla that was totaled wih a 2009 Sonada. Compared to the Corolla ,the Sonada is a better all around vehicle. solidly built and a alot of car for the money. I have the 4 cyl motor and it is peppy and good on gas. Owned it for 8 months, no problems at all. 10 year warranty was also a big selling point. I drove 2009 corolla but it felt flimsy compared to the Sonada. Overall a safe sensible car that I would buy again.

I convinced my Aunt in switching from Oldsmobile to Toyota, and she has LOVED her '01 Avalon for years now without trouble. Another example, is my Dad whose loved Buicks and Cheverolets all his life, but is now FINALLY getting rid of his '98 Buick Century for an '09 Limited Sonata. Point here folks, we all know the "Big 3" are suffering BADLY...!!! That said, instead of "limiting oneself", give Hyundai a try. I guarantee with the '09 Sonata's MAJOR improvements, they got Toyota & Honda nervous

J.D. Power & Associates, along with Consumer Reports, have rated the Sonata VERY well with regards too saftey & overall reliability. However..."people are people", and its unfortunate, that Hyundai's inital reputation got a bad rap. This said, i just don't think people are ready too "shake" or should i say sway there opinions, in a more positive light on this manufacturer. My whole family, has been GM for years, then i convinced my Aunt a long time Oldsmobile lover to switch too Toyota......

You can get the "Popular Package" on the GLS model with steering wheel mounted controls, tilt/telescope steering, trip computer, and unique exterior/interior trim. More people will be buying foreign cars like Hyundai if GM, Ford, and Chrysler go bankrupt. And for those who want a foreign car built in USA, Sonata is the one!

I Dont understand people that hate hyundai, they probably unhappy with their domestic junk that needs repairs daily, my 01 elantra has been great to me for 8 years and has never needed any kind of repairs, just regular on time maintenance. yeah old 80's early 90's hyundais where junk but today hyundai is way better in reliability than any domestic, thats why the big 3 are begging the gov for help, people today buy asian cars because they are better.

Hyundai wants to be Toyota, thats why they make cars that are great in their first 3 years of use but after that things just start to Rust, Plastics start to lose all their shine and the engine will start to fail just after the Warranty ends.

Hyundai has continued to gain market share, because they have shown dedication over the last 10 years and improved their cars immensely. What Technology has Hyundai? hyundai uses the same platform that Mitsubishi uses, that's why their older SUVS, Trucks came with Mitsubishi Engine. Also cause their commercial engine sucks, people change the engines after 3-4 years to used mitsubishi ones.

Before rebates the base model Sonata is about $785 less than 2009 Camry standard, with rebates it is almost $3,000 less. Stability control is $650 option on the camry, Sonata has it at no extra cost.

Consumer Reports just placed the '09 Sonata as Top Rated. Beat the Corolla. Quality is the same, but Hyundai cant match Toy/Hnda in resale. The Hyundai's depriciate 30% faster than the Toys.

If in many years they have done huge kms/miles and are still really reliable like Toyotas are then people will be like hold on a minuite maybe Hyundai's are good.
