What's scary to me is that The Simpsons has almost had more bad seasons than good ones. Seriously the show has been terrible for almost 10 years, and this former "Caroline in the City" writer is the reason why.
This show is called "Q." It's on at 10-11:30/12am and 10 pm-11:30/12pm every weekday in all time zones (which, if you're listening online and can choose the region, means you can listen to Jian virtually any time of the day).
i really can't stand the interviewers voice, always sounds like he's breathing heavely, they should just fire him, and bring in some big tittied hot chick :)
@SkylerStories A radio host has to have that type of voice to make listeners want to listen. And he has to keep talking and keep the convo going because otherwise it's called "dead air" when no one is talking. He has to give a perfect intro, otherwise it will confuse the listeners.
He's always looking down while reading his introductions. He's so scared of his introductions being sabotaged. "I will not look up at you even once until I tell the audience who you are."
Family guy is so much lazier than the Simpsons, not only because it is a bad Simpsons copy but because they simply randomly throw things together and occasionaly through sheer probabilty they produce something almost funny.. The Simpsons is well thought out inteligent satire whilst also managing to be be surreal. Anyone who enjoys Family more than The Simpsons has gone to piddle brain- wise.
@yossariancomplex The comparison between Family Guy and The Simpsons makes little or no sense. The only similarity between the two is they are animated. You are comparing apples and oranges. Every Simpson's episode is a three act very stringently regulated plot line. Family Guy on the other side is a more of a gradual progression with a pile of odd ball satire thrown in. Honestly the comparison you make makes absolutely no sense.
@hcgazoo- The main similarity between the Simpsons and Family guy are the characters of Peter and Homer- who are almost exactly the same. The only difference I can see is that I find Peter more anoyying than Homer. Since Family Guy is centrered (Loosely) around peter then surely this act of plagerism (Yes plagerism; the Simpson's writers agree and make constant reference to it their shows) completely discredits the show.
@hcgazoo The other differences you pointed out I did refer to in my origional post as the main reason why Family guy is inferior. Furhter similarities between family guy and the simpsons: both are centred around a family, bith have a moralising daughter character, both are focused (loosely) on a critique of American society. To saythere are no similarities because the narative style differ is to ignore alot.
@yossariancomplex You make a good point however to ignore the narritive is to ignore a cornerstone of the process and the very essence and therefore the context of the message. For me too many Simpson episodes end up wrapped up in a nice neat tidy package with a lesson or moral . It's like watching an animated version of Home Improvement. Family Guy however deliberately avoid's this in several episodes and I find that a refreshing jab at a genre that has remained unchanged for too long.
@hcgazoo I haven't ignored narrative- I (in my origional post) talked about the difference in narrative styles, and why I find the F.G. method of writing, and by extension narraitve, far inferior. After the first 6 or so series (of which i am not a fan) The Simpsons stoppped moralising, there arevery few clear cut messages in the current episodes- this was done before F.G. was even on the air. Just another example of F.G. plagerism.
nice interview, but why does every normally serious host feel like interviewing a comedian or comedy writer gives them license to be "wacky"? Just be a straight man and let them shine. Joel Cohen is a sharp dude tho. Cool to see beyond the voice actor focus of the Simpsons
Fantastic interview. "is there a danger..." was hilarious. This guy Joel should write for television. Oh wait, he does. Another shining example of the fact Canadians own and run Hollywood.
...what? haha this guy was a riot, and i will now admit that when I seen that a writer for The Simpson's was on i figured it may be boring and i was wrong...very wrong
Wrong dumbass, Alberta had all the oil last year and some years prior before new laws were implemented and everybody moved to Saskatchewan, who now have all the oil and all the jobs.
Who knew that the Simpson's would have had such an impact on television today? I guess we can throw Conan O'Brien into that mix of those impacted by the Simpson's.
maybe a little. but last time i checked alberta didn't have much of a communications and media industry. i'm just being realistic. toronto has the largest and most diversified economy in canada and is home to the most corporate headquarters, including that of the cbc and mr ghomeshi.
Seasons 3-8 will never be topped.

@davethehostage What about like, Coronation Street?..

@mattyhodg1 I know it's the longest running soap opera, but I'm not sure about the longest running series in general.
I could be wrong, though.
