I love everything he said, except for one thing: I wish he would have said the words "space elevator." He sort of mentioned it by saying we need new methods for entering low-earth orbit, but didn't mention a space elevator specifically. It's so expensive to use rockets, it seems like an investment in a space elevator would be far more worthy. In this way, Russian would rely on us to get into space cheaply, rather than us on them due to the canceling of Constellation.

The idea is to send a satellite into space that drops down a tether "ribbon" made of incredibly strong carbon nano tubes that would then be fastened to a base station on the earth. NASA has set up competitions in the past with cash rewards to those willing to develop the concept in small scale. Read the Wikipedia article on it to get a sense of the concept.
I love NASA. So many technologies have came out of it . NASA has filed a bit more than 6,300 patents. In those are things such as, scratch resistant lenses, memory foam, ear thermometers, shoe insoles, water filters, CAT scans, and freeze dry food. As a Geophysicist, and funded by NASA right now, I have to speak up for Earth observations: Geophysical and remote sensing of the Earth systems is a great investment, and it should not be discounted for space exploration. Getting the bedrock topography for the Greenland Ice Sheet would be a great first step,and will be INVALUABLE for future scientific achievement.

Wow this is really exciting. I think space exploration should be an important aspect of the U.S. in terms of progress. I remember my grandpa, who is a physicist and astronomer, talking about how scientists were not being funded enough under the Bush Administration. That may very well change.

@lightbats the plan is not to go to the Moon after Mars it's just not to go at all and go to a near Earth asteroid then Mars orbit then surface. You don't need a moon base to refuel, it's just one way of doing it. You can go straight from LEO to Mars if you're willing to build a huge rocket (or do earth orbit rendezvous, where you build the spacecraft from several parts in LEO).
In 1969 Von Braun designed and costed a plan to land on Mars by the 1980s but Nixon went for the shuttle instead.

However, we humans are at an extremely severe biosphere crisis, and we are putting nowhere near the funds we need to into it. Our short term sight is catastrophic. Put NASA money into renewable energy research NOW.

As a Geophysicist, and funded by NASA right now, I have to speak up for Earth observations: Geophysical and remote sensing of the Earth systems is a great investment, and it should not be discounted for space exploration. Getting the bedrock topography for the Greenland Ice Sheet would be a great first step,and will be INVALUABLE for future scientific achievement.

Wow this is really exciting. I think space exploration should be an important aspect of the U.S. in terms of progress. I remember my grandpa, who is a physicist and astronomer, talking about how scientists were not being funded enough under the Bush Administration. That may very well change.

@lightbats the plan is not to go to the Moon after Mars it's just not to go at all and go to a near Earth asteroid then Mars orbit then surface. You don't need a moon base to refuel, it's just one way of doing it. You can go straight from LEO to Mars if you're willing to build a huge rocket (or do earth orbit rendezvous, where you build the spacecraft from several parts in LEO).
In 1969 Von Braun designed and costed a plan to land on Mars by the 1980s but Nixon went for the shuttle instead.

President Obama is correct on every issue addressed, with the exception of one. We can not reach Mars and distant worlds utilizing resources here on Earth alone. The purpose of building an outpost on the Moon is to open up a new environment to develop and exploit.
We can gather and drill for resources safely, unlike here. The moon has so many more minerals available than most areas around the world. We can test new technologies there without the endangerment to life.

So let me understand. You want the capsule but not the delivery system? That will be provided by the private sector (first time you ever looked to the private sector for anything). But you are willing to build a delivery system for after you leave office. @azahgena We get far more information from space probes than from manned missions, and that's all the information we need in order to understand Earth's dependence on the solar system. For example, we first understood the potential of the greenhouse effect by looking at Venus.
However, we humans are at an extremely severe biosphere crisis, and we are putting nowhere near the funds we need to into it. Our short term sight is catastrophic. Put NASA money into renewable energy research NOW.

@EcrossH more science information comes from robotic spacecraft, yes, but robotic spacecraft don't create the massive technological advances from human spaceflight endeavors such as Apollo in computing, navigation, heat resistance and ablation, medicine, etc., etc. Modern computing power and the Internet would both be nonexistent without NASA.
