""Great Stuff NASA!! I can already see the Tri-Athlete creeping along the Lunar surface in HD""
Sorry to inform you but Obama just cancelled Constellation. Nasa won`t be returning to the moon anytime soon. Seems you will have to do with and HD animation.
Err.. you don't need t "inform" me i already know. And Obama just made a huge mistake for the sake of mankind. But that doesn't mean a Tri-Athlete type robotic wont be used future moon or other planetary missions. So yes, i still foresee this type of technology in the Tri-Athlete being used creeping along the surface manned or Unmanned.
The Tri-Athlete is brilliant. You see, if they had just equipped it with normal axles and wheels likve any other vehicle, it would have had to be stored inside the Lunar Module at ground leel to be able to unload it. NASA would only be able to carry one wheeled vehicle to the moon with each mission.
But the legs solve that problem brilliantly by giving it legs, allowing it to be stored on top of something else like a Rover!
Pretty cool but they all look like they weigh TONS! the Apollo LEM and Rover went through multiple rounds of weight saving, like removing the seats (yes they stood up to land!). and the HAB thingy from 4:13 onwards looks WAY too complicated. Whats wrong with a ladder? Or better still put the HAB under the descent stage and just drive it away. I can see these things getting stripped to the bone to save weight again....
the tri-athlete FINALLY looks like a vehicle out of all those futuristic sci-fi movies. hopefully it doesn't take too much longer to actually put them into use.
Science is Awesome, Yeah, But...Wait Until Yew See the CHRISTIAN ROVER DEBUT!! YEAH...xtians have GODADVANTAGE!! (hmmm..dunnothestatusofthatyet..dewyew?)
one is reminded of that cool sci-fi movie moon zero two (hammer 1969) with catherine schell I as clementine inside the moon buggy (in her black swimsuit) at farside5!
The vehicle is moving backwards. In the first shot of the vehicle, it is moving the other way (with the flag sticker in the front). When it is going up that hill, it is going up back back front.
This would be great for roaming around Burning Man ;-)

Does anyone know if these tires on the rover are the same type of tires that will be used on the actual moon version?

MAN! NASA's ingenuity is unprecedented.
Imagine how far mankind could go, not only in to the cosmos, but here on earth vastly improving technology if NASA was given a bigger budget.

Nice to see the stuff we will never use, thanks Obama! The money to go to the moon will be spent on a better cause ...like ACORN.

obvioulsy your IQ doesn't allow you to get that these things were planned and engeeneered far before Obama's election.
Magnum756 2 years ago
Oh I know when they were planned. But now they have to be scrapped because we are not going to the moon!

and also...how will you fit these on top of the new Ares rockets? :)

Amazing! When I see that, it seems that we have been living on the Moon for decades. Great job NASA.
