'Art' needs to be qualified. Semantically it's ambiguous, but dispensing with the 'good/bad, it's all art' stance, I think that to be an artist, it's not enough to simply have something to say (we all do) or to have a medium through which you want to say it (painting, music, literature, dance etc), but to be someone who by creative eloquency and vision, talent and developed practical skill, can create a work that expresses its' statement in a way which a lay person would not be able to execute.
I have learned since taste in art is subjective that art is about technical abilities. So basically art is art when it is made up of the right technique and use of the medium you use (brush, paint, camera) composition, shapes, contrast and meaning.
Maybe that's true. But the guy said if I create something it's called art. So going to the toilet is too? Aheh. Maybe in a way it's for others to decide wether it's art. The artist's job is to create something that a normal person isn't able to do. And that's their technique(s)/creativity.
The arts may have lost some of their popularity as tools to 'educate the souls of men' ('soul? is that some part of the brain?'). Nevertheless, everybody retains to some extent a desire for what is healthy, just, harmonious, penetrating and true.

Certainly the photo itself is art, because of the choice selected by the photographer. And hence the Artists choice of that particular photo is art, but the process of rendering it into a painting is strictly craft.

I actually found myself thinking about invisible/embedded art, after posting that... Like, I dunno... Indistinguishable counterfeit designer items or something, the emotional response then lies only with the artist. (As with any ignored piece, I suppose.)

An old,well let's say 'timeless" unanswerable question.The flaw is in the asking..ie define something subjective.What really interests me is the idea that new technology will uncover great art.I fully expected +1yr ago for Youtube to become the place for new film talent.Sorry to say I haven't seen it yet.Has anyone?

popeye: a recommendation: a yt clip is a piece of art in itself. why define it in terms of some other art form, e.g. film?? I say learn to love this place for what it is, and for some of the innovative people who have turned out to be entertaining.

Claymation and other traditional arts should not be underestimated, even when high tech improves the toolbags and alternatives. Ultimately it still all comes down to talent - that's what makes art.

Fisrt of I wold like to say how muchit friggin pisses me off that ppl leave weak comments like "firts :D or, 2'd YAY!" stupid ppl say something about the video and then Id like to say WOO HOO ART!!! Tech if you ask me makes art harder cuz theres so much more that you can do with it now I love it I do art with all mediums and tech still rocks it!!! YAY CG art^.^

well you (at least i) dont always have something to say about a video even if i enjoyed watching it. and stupid comments stil contribute to getting a video higher on the most discussed list. as long as its not a hateful comment i dont see why somebody could get pissed off. oh so sorry.

well if you enjoyed watching it you do indeed have something to say "I enjoyed watching that" or maby saying what part you enjoyed most maby? You have a mind fulla things to say try saying thouse things and you'll be contibuting in a legit way :D I meeen realy is it that important to be first to comment? Id rather say "awsome vid" then "FIRST!"
