Eric Johnson comes from the school of guitar wankery just like Vai, and Malmsteen..All these guys sound generic and have no soul because their obsessed with the perfect tone? If they would stop bitching over tone and play from the soul theyd be better. Hendrix didn't seem to worry about tone, Ive seen concert footage of him and it sounded like he was playing a fuzz through the distortion channel on an amp and it was beautiful...

@TheOrderoftheOwl You are totally nuts. Couldn't disagree with you more. One thing you will notice about the guitarists you mention is that 80% of their "tones" are derived of their techniques. If you want to argue that they focus too much on techniques, the perhaps you may be able to hold an argument. But it is clear that you have no idea of what you're talking about.

I am a big fan of the Fuzz Face, but not this one. I heard the "Eric Johnson Fuzz Face" at Namm on Saturday and Sunday with different guitars and players. It sounded flat, mushy, and flabby, not musical. It had no life. I am surprised that Eric put his name on it.

@mouloudo no that one was a fuzz someone made for eric and he didnt like it but joe did. they then made a JB signature model based on that one. this one is a new EJ signature fuzz. joe's is germanium, this is silicon. probably why eric didnt like the one joe has. he prefers the silicon ones.

Does the darn thing have an on/off led indicator? A lot of the early stomp boxes had no indicator and I was around in those days. When you came off break you had to try and remember what was turned on or not and that was not always easy after a few mugs or glasses of memory erase fluids, That dude should braid his beard and it's make a nice leash for his wife or girlfriend to grab when she needs him follow, but he better stay away from blenders and cake mixers, hehe. Anyway; he's a good picker.

I have one of these, not signature, Is a damn great pedal, lot´s of character. Yes I don´t use a lot of gain on it like Eric, but still, I´m not Eric. I think this one will be more warm and midrangy maybe, or more touch sensitive, I don´t know. I do recognize my own pedal sound on this demo, so Is not so different from the original, I think It will be a subtil difference, but I bet it will be good! And it looks great, goldtop!!

They can be very temperamental. Also if you turn the guitars volume to about 8-9

YES...I agree!

You CAN have your guitar dimed and sound good through a fuzz-face, but the gain on the pedal needs to be fairly low, and the gain on the amp needs to be somewhere between "clean-and-edgy!"

In general, what you said is right though...You GOTTA ride the volume-knob on the guitar to get the BEST out of the fuzz-face!

Perfect example: Check out Jimi Hendrix (BOG) live "Machine Gun." THAT tone is/was to die for, and he's riding the volume CONSTANTLY!

Eric Johnson's superhuman level of articulation affords him a heavier, splattier fuzz than most of us mere mortals can pull off. Also keep in mind the difference in pickups here. I don't know if you've ever played a G&L, but those pickups aren't as similar to Fender pickups as you might think - generally higher output, so even less articulation still. I bet if you go listen to an EJ clip w/ his old Fuzzfaces going, you'll be able to hear what he was going for w/ this pedal.
