The Canon G12 is a handy little camera. I was in Papua New Guinea last week and had to use to take video after my Sony EX-1 malfunctioned. The video quality looks all right, but a shallower depth of field like what you see with DSLR video would be nice. You can't zoom while recording video and the auto-irsis can be annoying as well. I've heard it can be controlled manually with the scroll-wheel.
Canon has given its popular PowerShot series a face lift with the addition of the PowerShot G12 Digital Camera. While remaining true to many of its predecessor's features, the G12 comes busting out of the gate with what's fast becoming a standard on digital cameras: digital video (with stereo sound no less!). Shoot 1280 ...

@andrademeza Yes I misheard them. Its actually the Canon that has no HD movie mode. Any camera of this price range should have at least 720p these days.
@simon44 at 1:27 he's comparing the g12 to g11, g11 had VGA video the g12 has HD, listen for the part where he says "the lack of HD video, WICH THE G12 HAS MANAGED TO SQUEEZE IN" Also i have sent you a link to the specifics on the g12 from canons website. scroll down to where it says "movie data"
@andrademeza Ah right then I've completely fucked up then. My bad. I went with the Sony HX9V in the end. It just made sense to me. 1080p slow motion video recording and a fantastic stills camera with a manual mode to boost. Light and small for travel too.
@simon44 hehehe nah you made no fuck up going with the hx9...GREAT camera...i was considering the g12 vs p7000 but then ruled out the g12 and was considering the canon s95 vs p7000 and have started considering the hx9v aswell...but the only one ive held in person is the hx9...so im still stuck...
@andrademeza well I can vouch for the HX9V anyway. The only negative I have is the zoom could be smoother. Seemingly a common problem in all the x16 point and shoot cameras at the moment. I think its the compromise you make for that extra zoom. Makes no difference to stills but video shots mighten look as neat. Still very hard to fault though. Its definately the best point and shoot camera out there and I've tried all of the top of the range ones.
Been a Canon User for 10+ years: Have been deciding between these two cameras for several months now as a replacement for my DSLRs as a carry-around camera. Base on my research, and what RealMagic said, the Nikon seems more pro:
Audio Input Jack for an external mic, i-TTL Flash function (This is HUGE). Too many great features that the Nikon has over Canon to not go in that direction. :)
I tried both of these at BestBuy and 1 major problem with the Canon was the controls by your right hand thumb are too easy to bump. And the problem with the Nikon is accessing the ISO (slow) and Aperture (tiny dial) is a pain.
I went ahead and got a P7000 just before Christmas as the firmware update was out around mid-Dec. After juggling between G12 and this, and given I am a Nikon user (D80 + accessories like SB800 flash and wireless remote), I finally decided on P7000. Suffice to say, I wasn't disappointed at all! The controls are intuitive, the transition to master this is seamless given my D80 experience. Not to mention it shares some accessories with my Nikon gears! Thank you for a good review!
Glad I went with the G12 then.. Anyway, I think it all boils down to brand preference - in you being a solid canon or nikon user, 'coz the 2 are almost the same.
Both are capable cameras and you can't really pick a winner without getting much deeper into the feature set, and then deciding what is more important to you.
The Nikon is more Pro than the Canon (many more professional tweak options, and the D-Lighting feature that puts the three-shot bracketing of the Canon to shame), but the Canon is easier to use.
My advice is to download both USER GUIDES and compare... you will find surprises that these two clowns missed completely.

@simon44 The G12 DOES have HD; it was the G11 that was lacking this feature, and Canon has since upgraded this on the newer model.

And the Canon DOES do HD video recording, at 720p, do you really need 1080p on a camera? If you want it that badly, you'd buy a camcorder.
sooupdragon 8 months ago
the HD video on the Nikon is bad, just compare it with videos from the Canon G12 on youtube.

I'm going for the P7000, because of the hi-res screen, 28-200mm lens, abillity to use a stereo mic and of course zooming when filming....
But thanks for the review anyway!
