Please, please, please stop murdering this wonderful song! The tempo is far too slow, all the witty bits are missed out and it does absolutely no favours to one of the best songs F&S ever did...
Thanks for this. It's impossisble not to make comparisons with Flanders and Swann, and this version is quite different - more along the lines of what one imagines to be the 'music hall' presentation. The waltz rhythm is much more obvious here. One thing I do miss is the superb accompaniment of Donald Swann. Having said this, it's great stuff.
Awesome. I love the song. Until a few months ago, I had no idea why so many people truly disliked many artists (JB, Ke$ha, etc.), mainly due to the fact I had been listening only to Flanders and Swann and classical music. Then I heard them; all I can say is: JB, Ke$ha, Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers are infinitely inferior to this incredible comedy duo.
You seem to fit every role, song, You do and have presented them well (infact very well) I know a lot of effort has been done on your part befor it gets added to youtube Plus the double roles you have Performed on your other youtube pages - Are All Brilliantly Done - Thank You

Yo Roseann90, aw, thank you so much. Well, I haven't been sued by Coldplay's lawyers yet, lol. Maybe they just don't know about it. Lovely choir singing on your vids btw. God bless, Eric.
What a marvelous performance! I remember Tony Randall doing this on a variety show in the 1970's. It has stayed in my mind lo, these many years. I have to say -- your performance is better.
Do u hav the piano part for this i cant find it anywhere and id luv to perform it. I think ur brilliant i cudnt stop laughing at the end, you portray that man wel.
Hi MrSportyleman, thanks for you lovely comment. No, I don't have a copy of the sheet music. I got it from: 'The Songs of Flanders and Swann' from my local library. I'm sure if you try yours they can get you a copy. Best, Eric.
I've since viewed some of your other videos. Really excellent. I'd love to see you try a few different song. one that springs to mind as something you could act out is The Dubliners "the Sick note". keep it up. :-)
Hi mumomima, thank you so much for your kind comment. Re your suggestion, I think that might be the song about the 'basket of bricks'? If so, I have a feeling this was based on an earlier recording of the tale as told by Gerard Hoffnung at the Oxford Union or something like that. lingeringmermaidspy, hi Helen, thanks for posting. What an excellent suggestion, it would be fun to have a crack at that tongue twister, I'll bear it in mind. Take care now, Eric.
Hi PJTraill, thanks for comment and info. Ah, I see. I took the song from a music book and all those humorous little asides and off the cuff stuff, weren't in it. Best, Eric.
I enjoyed seeing you perform this, but I am sorry you seem to have censored it a bit: no "all unperforated", a "voice" rather than a "beard" in her earhole.
Hi PJTraill, thanks so much for comment. You're right about 'beard'. The reason being is that for parts of the song I am portraying/acting the part of the 'old letcher' and as I don't have a beard I felt it might be a bit confusing. As to "all unperforated" I'll have to look at the lyrics again as I don't remember that being in it. Best, Eric.
brcp4321, hi Peter, thank you so much, and thanks for the rating. I must admit I do believe in thoroughly learning something first and then one can play around with it or get 'into' it more. Sometimes though, I also have to admit, I can be a bit sloppy, and go with a 'that'll have to do' attitude, which I always regret afterwards. Take care, Eric.
What I meant was " for parts of the song I am portraying/acting the part of the 'old letcher' " THAT must have taken some doing ...just a joke my friend just a joke Im sure you can only act such a part !!
And kudos for finding the second example of zeugma in response to jimada's now year-old post pointing out the first.
You're right we're never too old to learn, but apparently we're sometimes too old to see completely. There's a third zeugma in there, and now that you know what to look for, you'll delight once more when you find it, I'm sure....
Hi jftsang, thanks for question. I'm a bit confused though, do you mean who's the singer in the video? C'est moi! Or do you mean who's the original? well that would be Flanders and Swann. Hope that answers your enquiry. Best, Eric.
Hi 1mzooty, thanks so much mate. I checked out your channel and you make some very interesting vids. I'd like to add a link to them if that's okay on my site: homevideotalentshow all the best, Eric.

Only on U2B would I find a group of fellow F&S fans!
"Bedstead Men" is definitely an amazing song, but I think it would have to be a duo: the harmonies are too important an effect. Also, have you all heard "Twenty Tons of TNT"? A beautiful, evocative, and absolutely chilling song.
Hi seacow1970, thanks for comment. At the moment I have a list of things I want to do and explore so I'm afraid any more F & S will have to wait, but many thanks for asking. Cheers, Eric.
Hi gerryrob82, thank very much for your comment and marks. First time I've ever got 10 out of 10 for anything. 'The League of British Bedstead Men' Wow, I am put to shame, I've never heard of it, is that Flanders and Swann? I must do some research. All the best, Eric.
Love the bawdy interpretation - very different, but very entertaining! F+S stopped performing about 35 years before I was born...why doesn't anyone write music like this any more??
Hi devorguila, thanks for comment. I think all art should be looked at from different angles. Nothing should be written in stone. As to why no-one writes like this any more? Well maybe they do, but who is giving them the chance to be heard? All the best, Eric.
Believe it or not, I once saw Tony Randall do this tune on the old Tonight Show when Carson was hosting! I loved it then...I love it now! Thanks for posting it.
Zeugma is the use of a single word modifying several different clauses in a sentence: He said as he hastened to PUT OUT the cat, the wine, his cigar, and the lamps. I had heard the song before on a middle-60's album by The Limelighters, which I also enjoyed very much, and have used the lyrics of this piece as a demonstration piece of memorized poetry for students in my speech classes. It was fun to hear it again.
HI jimada56, thanks for explaining that. It's used again in the song with: 'She made no reply, up her mind, and a dash for the door', I think, right? You're never too old to learn folks. All the best, Eric.
One of the worst renditions???? I beg to differ with nanajack...I have heard the original Madeira by F&S and other renditions...Erics is the best I have heard...He brings the song to life!!!! Breaths life into it!!!!
Hi nanajack7, thanks for your comment. It's interesting to hear how people view things. Music, art, acting, poetry etc. For myself as an actor/entertainer I look for things I can 'act' out. I don't do 'readings'. I didn't 'see' it as understated and droll, with a 'sly' wink perhaps? So that's my interpretation. But at the end of the day I firmly believe: 'All art is subjective'. Cheers, Eric.
One of my favourite F&S numbers, in a suitably amusing rendition, well done! While its more sad than funny, you might want to have a crack at "Slow Train". And just to show off, did you know that "have some madiera.." contains a very amusing example of zeugma? Having just listened again, make that two!
By the same token if someone has something intelligent to say by way of constructive criticism I also reply to that. On the other hand spiteful vindictive comments I don't reply to. I don't see the point. In fact I am of the opinion that these comments say more about the writer than the recipient. And I never, never block comments. Everyone can have their say. To block comments would rather defeat the whole raison detre of You Tube. End of story. Get a life. Eric.
Well, strictly speaking all the F&S material is in copyright and performance royalties ought to be paid! However since you're performimng for free and no-one's paying to watch it I don't see how this could be achieved. YouTube is a legal grey area, anyhow, so go on singing and giving people pleasure!
By the way, there's a new 4-CD boxset of F&S coming out at Xmas as well as unreleased footage.
Hello Leon, thank you so much for your comment. Especially as you are the administrator of the F & S estates. Thank you also for being so accomodating.
This never gets old, Eric; it's one of the high points of YouTube.

Liked the rendition of this song very much. It was well done.

this is one of the worst renditions of 'Madeira that I've ever heard.Should be understated and droll
nanajack7 4 years ago

Hi procrustesuk, many thanks for comment. I looked up zeugma in the dictionary and I'm none the wiser! All the best, Eric.

Get a life. Eric.

dirtyfleabag. To put the matter straight and an end to it. I reply to people who have said something nice out of courtesy.

what i love about eric is that he is happy to reply to fauning adoration...but just blocks my commments when i speak about his wart.

I third that disagreement - how do you create these?
robhbuk 4 years ago
Hi robhbuk, thank you so much. As for creating, the credit should go to Flanders and Swann. I'm only the messenger. Eric.
