I disagree with this guys opinion that the 2 David Chase statements both suggest Tony dies in this scene. I think the one about you never knowing its going on until it's happened, suggests he's dead, but the one about this is what Tony's future looks like,, seems to be saying he doesn't die here, and the shady looking characters were just to show that Tony would always be looking over his shoulder, even if most times it was all completely innocent., but he probably would one day be killed.
The way I see it is why would the guy have to retrieve the gun from the toilet? In the godfather it was there because he knew he'd be searched before going into the restaurant and so couldn't have it on him. But nobody would search this guy so if he was gonna kill Tony surely he'd already have the gun on him.
what a brilliant ending for the show! as the time passes it just gets better! in the final scene chase created a state of flux (when things could go either way), and thus he transcended his show to our lives. we continue to live different outcomes of his characters. cause the first thing we thought after seeing the black screen is: what happens (next)? that's the essence and question we need to try answering for ourselves. while trying that "don't stop believing" keeps playing in our heads.
One other important factor, is that if you have seen The Road, the man, right before he shoots the cannibal near the beginning, explains that he would not hear the sound of the gun shot because the bullet would travel faster than sound. That is why we never hear a gunshot in my opinion.
There are the symbols of 3 in the final scene that everyone is aware of. The ones that I noticed was that carm was the 3rd person to enter the restaurant as Tony was looking up for. There were 3 boy scouts sitting at a table. The hunting looking guy received his coffee with 3 creamers. It took Meadow 3 attempts to park the car. And to push this even further "Don't Stop Believing" is 3 words. lol.
Tony's number was up. Whether from a headshot or Carlo's testimony. Even if Sil had just got winged, He'd be going to the can just from the Fat Dom killing alone. This of course would leave Pauly running the family with Murmur, Warren & Benny. This would leave the family wide open for Butchy to come in and in his own words "absorb the whole fuckin' thing". New York played Pauly like a cheap horn. I noticed how he was left off of the hitlist when Phil wanted to "decapitate".
i think the ending was bullshit after watching the whole seasone i would think that they owed it to the audience to make a difinative ending weather tony dies or not .its a cop out to leave it open, it only benifits david chase not the fans that supported the whole 6 seasons,its a tv show not a subject for debate now i dont care if he died or not i just think that david chase wants a safty net to come back to if his future work fails!!! if it ended like that in a book i would have burned thebook
I think you missed the point. (Don't worry, a lot of people did.) It wasn't about "leaving it open." And the ending was definitive, if you think about it. We know that Tony is past his prime, and that he is likely facing a lengthy trial, and probably prison. We know that Carlo is a rat. We know that some form of equilibrium has been restored to the Soprano nuclear family.
The definitiveness just didn't come in the form of the usual, formulaic, "big-bang" resolution.
But what about the argument about people saying that there was no reason for him to be killed? Something about the thing in NY was settled and he had no enemies anymore. So why would he be killed? Eager for responses :D
tony was killed by MOG. the whole series lead up to it. there's a bunch of pointers but they've all been done to death (pun intended), and lets leave it at that.
the real question is who was behind the hit.
my theory is Little Carmine - he was stirring the NY NJ war from the start in a very subtle way. there was a power vacuum after, the Sopranos crew were decimated, Tony was old news and time was right to start anew. like johnny sac said "they let things go when youre earning"
I shall explain ... Tony flips on everyone else after realizing the severity of the charges against him. Like Leotardo says... Tony never did any real time in jail... and he is not about to start.
Plus, in real life, the family in which the show is supposed to somewhat revolve around, Tony ends up flipping on everyone else.
Why in the world the guy in the Jacket go in to the bathroom to get a gun? It is not like he got patted down before entering the Diner. I mean... if he was going to kill Tony he would have went in there blasting. He would not have sat down for a cup of coffee.
@TheFF722 You have no fuckin brain idiot. He sat down and ordered coffee so he wouldnt look suspicious, then he went into the bathroom so he can get ready for the kill, plus he would have a clear shot from the bathroom exit. If Meadow "The Guardian Angel" would of made it to the table she would have saved Tony, but she was too late.
The Members Only Guy (MOG), if he were really an assassin, would have shot Tony as soon as possible. He would not need to go to the bathroom to "get a clear shot at Tony"; he ALREADY HAD ONE. He simply could have moved toward Tony AS IF going to the restroom, then surprised him.
And the whole thing about Meadow is ridiculous. Even if she were already there, what's she gonna do? Stick her tits in the way?
@DetectiveCrockett77 Thats not the point... it doesnt matter if he killed Tony right away or went to the bathroom first. There are dozens of clues throughout the series that are a dead giveaway that Tony will be whacked. And in the final scene, every time the little doorbell rings the camera shows Tonys face, then the camera shows what Tony sees through his eyes. When Meadow enters, we see Tonys face, then through his eye, but all we see is black because thats what he sees, nothing, hes dead
Listen, I've been through this before, so I don't want to bore you. But these "clues" a lot of you keep talking about are only clues if you personally interpret them to be such. And as for the POV pattern, it's there all right, but you guys keep overlooking one thing: The screen cut to black with the camera ON TONY, making it illogical to interpret the blackscreen itself as his POV. Film language dictates that we would have seen what he was seeing BEFORE the cut.
@DetectiveCrockett77 No shit sherlock. This is the sequence... bell rings --> we see tonys face --> we see thru Tony's eyes. The screen cuts black when we see thru Tony's eyes for the final time. Also remember the first episode of season 6 when that weird voice is talking about the "7 souls", Meadow is the "guardian angel". She saved Tony's life twice in the series, and if she made it to the table she would of blocked the guys shot, but "3 strikes your out", she didnt save him the 3rd time.
My friend, I don't need the pattern explained to me. I thought I made that clear.
The final shot is of Tony. That's when it cuts to black. It's not as if the shot was of his POV (presumably Meadow entering), and THEN the scene cut to black. If that were the case, the theory that the blackscreen was his POV would have more credibility.
Secondly, Meadow wouldn't really have "blocked the guys shot" anyway.
On another note, "3 strikes your out" doesn't constitute any sort of evidence. It's just a saying, and one that doesn't usually hold true anyway. Further, you could make the case that Meadow "saved" Tony's life a third time already (admittedly, this is a stretch): By revealing to Tony her run-in with Coco. We all know what happened to Coco as a result, and Butch was obviously intimidated. Think that had anything to do with his wanting to "reach out?"
@DetectiveCrockett77 Yes "3 strikes your out" is evidence.... when Tony gets out of the hospital he says "my uncle tried to kill me twice, well 3 strikes your out". And the number 3 is all over the series. But the reach out wasnt because of Coco. Butch pretty much told Tony that he can go ahead and take out Phil, but he cant help him out by telling him where Phils hiding, because another guy at the sit down could tell Phil then have Butch popped. "I bet you never even hear it when it happens
No, it is not. It's just one character's particular viewpoint. It doesn't mean it's going to happen that way.
As for the number 3, what the Tony-died crowd doesn't understand is that for the most part, "3" was actually a GOOD thing to the Sopranos. (See: Paulie and his biopsy results, Junior's cancer in Season 3, Tony's ICU room number in "Join the Club.")
As for Coco, I didn't say he was the REASON Butch reached out to Tony. What the incident with Coco did, however, was start a course by which Butch increasingly feared Tony. When Butch first appeared on the show, he was dismissive of Tony. After the Coco incident, however, his behavior toward T changed dramatically. Hence by the final episode, he was so quick to reach out, whereas he probably wouldn't have otherwise.
"It's all there." Everybody repeats this line. And of all the lines David Chase uttered after the ending aired, it's probably the most misunderstood.
What it meant--to me, anyway--wasn't that Tony was killed. He was referring to the final details of resolution in that scene. "We touched on everything." Carlo is indeed a rat. A.J. and Meadow both have new prospects. Tony and Carm both seem resigned to T's fate.
"Whether it happened that night or some other night . . ."
@DetectiveCrockett77 The moral of the Sopranos is that Tony put his mafia family before his real family. When he was in his coma his trip to Costa Mesa was a revelation and realized his real family comes first. In the episode when Chris dies his trip to Vegas is the opposite, he cheats his wife and his fate is death. At the end of that episode hes looking at the sun in the desert and its flashed like the beacon in his coma. Paulie was saved in the episode when he forgives Nucci.
First of all, EVERYBODY'S "fate" is death. Whether Tony puts his mafia family first or otherwise has no bearing on whether he will be killed. The fact that he cheated on Carmela--thereby reverting to his old self--in "Kennedy and Heidi" doesn't serve as any sort of evidence that he's going to die. And Paulie wasn't necessarily "saved" by reconciling with Nucci. I don't know where you're getting this from.
@DetectiveCrockett77@DetectiveCrockett77 No shit. Premature death. You obv dont know how to interpret symbolism. Paulie was fucking saved by reconciling with his REAL FAMILY. The "great wind" and the virgin mary are clues in the series many times. The whole series is pretty much a puzzle of Tonys fate. In episode 1 hes crying because the ducks fly away and he thinks it symbolizes hes gonna lose his family, then watch the last episode, hes draining his pool.
@DetectiveCrockett77 Just read this because you obv cant comprehend.... masterofsopranos.wordpress . com/the-sopranos-definitive-explanation-of-the-end/
That blog is old news. You guys have to stop promoting it. It's a tired, kneejerk reaction, almost as if you're in a cult. The guy never really proves his case. He just makes a laundry list of things he thinks "prove" that Tony was killed, but never actually goes anywhere with it. It's all circular logic.
As for "symbolism," again, you Tony-died people LOVE to mention this. Symbolism doesn't equal plot. It's just there.
You're doing the same thing "masterofsopranos" did in his blog: You keep making observations about the show which do happen to be true, but you're not ACTUALLY DEMONSTRATING how they indicate Tony was killed. We all know about the ducks and what they symbolize. We all know about the pool. But how does that indicate that Tony was killed?
@DetectiveCrockett77 Lol just forget. Your problem is you dont see the Sopranos is more than just a show to entertain us, its a puzzle that goes by an important "moral" that Tony must follow. The same moral is in the Godfather. Michael Corleone puts his mafia family before his wife and kids and look what happens, he doesnt die but he loses his entire family through death and divorce. Tony on the other hand get killed infront of his family just like how Phil did.
How do you conclude that I "don't see the Sopranos is more than just a show to entertain us . . .?" Because I logically contend that symbolism doesn't prove Tony was killed?
See, YOUR problem--like the other Tony-died people--is that you have this cult-like, automatic, robotic list of responses to people on my side, such as "You just don't understand symbolism." "You must have loved the character so much . . ." is another one.
Moreover, as to your claim that the show was a "puzzle," with a "moral," of course it was. But so are numerous other shows and films. The Sopranos isn't unique in that respect. And again, this fact doesn't indicate one way or another what may have happened to Tony in the final scene.
It seems to me as if you Tony-died people read the masterofsopranos blog, but didn't bother questioning it. You just accepted it at face value.
@DetectiveCrockett77 What does other shows that have a puzzle have to do with the Sopranos. I didn't just read the masterofsopranos blog and accept it at face value, I have all 86 episodes on my computer and studied them all and put alot of thought into that blog. Do you really think David Chase would bother making 86 episodes just to have an ending that cuts black and doesnt mean anything? You dont have an open mind.
And again with the empty charges: I don't have an open mind. Why? If anything, I'm proving that I do.
The ending DOES mean something. It just doesn't mean what you THINK it means. That's my point. Chase isn't the type of auteur to end a show in a cliched fashion, at least not if he can avoid it. He's not going to have a the mobster-protagonist killed just because it's a mob show. The cut to black meant something else.
@DetectiveCrockett77 And that Ojibwa saying "Sometimes I go about in pity for myself, all the while a great wind carrys me across the sky". When Paulie forgives Nucci he looks out the window and watches wind brush against leaves (and he sees the Virgin Mary). When Tony is saved from his trip he hears Meadows voice and sees wind brushing against some trees. Now go to the final episode, T is raking leaves in his yard and looks up, the trees are all dead and theres no wind. Its all there
@DetectiveCrockett77 I just wanted to Interject here for a moment. I like the debate however I want to tackle the question of Tony being killed or living on. I watched over the series again and their is great symbolism held throughout specific episodes that draw conclusions to tony's fate. However many are irrelevant to the final episode and only serve purpose to his mental states and how they effect his relationship with his family. I'm a huge mob movie buff and grew up in Ozone Park Queens
Respond to this video... Which is Considered Gotti Family Territory.But with that said the new york family was out to kill off tonys crew and said they were not an actual legitimate family which they weren't. They did not run things by actual code. The man in the members only jacket in the last seen i believe killed tony from tony's right side. everything you see is from tonys front POV. In order for tony not to strike back the man wouldve had to cock his gun in the bathroom before sh
Respond to this video... ooting him. It does play out like the Godfather but the functionality with a handgun and the need for any fight from tony the man that stepped into the bathroom clearly ha to have shot him. The black guys were to throw you off. "Only Remember the Good times". That's something his son will live on to remember. To make a hit at a mob boss you need a commission ok from another family to make that move. And there was enough blood shed and retaliation going on
@TheFF722 I agree with everything you said EXCEPT the part about the guy in the jacket killing him before he would go to the bathroom. Take the classic film "The Godfather" for example.
Alright Jesus I'll throw in here. David Chase, the creator of the show has definitively said that Tony doesn't get killed in the final scene. As explained in THIS FUCKING VIDEO the ending is about what life will always be like for Tony: Paranoid but with moments of comfort from his family. One day he'll probably get killed or end up in prison but not neccessarily yet. That's it. There's nothing else to read into it.
@johnacrob "Everything that pertains to that episode was in that episode. And it was in the episode before that and the one before that and seasons before this one and so on. There had been indications of what the end is like. Remember when Gerry Torciano was killed? Silvio was not aware that the gun had been fired until after Gerry was on his way down to the floor. That's the way things happen: It's already going on by the time you even notice it." ----The most recent quote from David Chase.
'Silvio talking to Tony about the Toricano hit; ("..that's the way things happen") and Tony KNOWS that now! Tony's aware of such surprises and having just come out of the mattresses with this leatardo fiasco; being with loved ones, Tony isn't so gullible not to maintain protection; especially in that environment. The shows' final music clip choreographed specifically, magnificently tailored for this finale. "..it goes on and on and.... don't stop, believing
@Seville58 Sry man, your theory doesn't hold up. First of all, If AJ had an escort, where was Tony's? Carm's? Meadow's? And how does one escort someone by walking infront of them? Also if the hit man was indeed an underling of Tony's, why was there a complete lack of eye contact when he walked into the restaurant, nevermind a greeting. And the song was clearly chosen because it doesn't just go on and on. The fact of the matter is that Tony was probably taken out for clipping Phil Leotardo.
"...it goes on and on and on..." 'and I continue watching my Soprano repeats; just as I'm certain that Tony doesn't die here. ALL THREE hit men that I spotted in this restaurant WORKED FOR TONY in prior episodes ("it's already going on by the time you even notice it") Remember the hitman that literally "escorted" AJ into the restaurant? Sits on the counter behind AJ; 6ft directly in front of Tony's sight? ("..a clean trend on view") 'keeping watch of his/their surroundings.. Cont...
Tony Soprano stepped on too many toes; he killed a boss from an old family; even tho that boss was out to kill him. The only real question was which family really did it.
But then maybe that was the point; Tony had made a lot of serious enemies and he and his crew had killed a lot of people; it could have been anyone.
I agree with everything you said in your commentary about how the series ended, with the exception of your last comment of how Carmella & possibly the kids didn't make it out of the restaurant. If Tony was indeed killed, (in the Italian Mafia), families are never touched; Tony actually is quoted as saying this in one of the episodes. Had it been the Russian; Albanian; Mexican Mob, etc.; then most likely everyone would've died. But in the Italian Mob an entire family would never have been killed
@MattSchoch My surviving friends in NY call me "Mrs. Soprano." I was married in the Gambino and Galente families, to my horror. The women are taken -- usually married to the killer, per Onassis and Jackie. "Take his women."
@thejigawotts interesting comment with the Journey song.But it could have also have indicated Tonys life then the song ends when the movie ends.Remember Journey ( Life is a Journey) But that Journey sooner or later ends like a movie coming to an end.It fades to black exept no credits.Then another life is born into the world and there journey begins (Meadows child).So the movie goes on and on.
It's all in the song don't stop believing, esp verse two, some willw win (tony) some will lose (phil) some will always sing the blues (tony and aj will always be depressed) but the movie never ends it goes on and on and on and on (life goes on) we've visisted their lifes and now we're out it. simple as that.
if you rememeber the FBI agent Harris has already explained how sick leotardo was trying to set up a female agent for an attack and he always went on about making tony suffer like he did when tony b killed his brother. The screen at the end of the final episode goes black as its looking at Tony and AJ was sitting in that seat. I think that in a final act of revenge the guy, who if you read the credits was a leotardo, comes out of the WC and whacks AJ!!!
@MrLucab79 Oooh. Yeah! I like that idea! Good hypothesis! I guess part of it is that I never liked AJ's character, but the parallel of a Leoptardo getting revenge for a relative's murder makes sense. There was (in support of your theory) an episode with a blown Sit-Down between Leotardo's people and Tony wherein Phil says something to the effect of, "You don't know what it's like to have a family member murdered...maybe I CAN MAKE THAT HAPPEN FOR YOU SOMEDAY." So...MAYBE!
I think it's all about perspective.Like the guy said: "You don't hear it when it happens" WE were looking at Tony.And you would've heard Tony get shot.But since it was in our perspective,I think the shot the audience.8DD either that or Tony did die.lolz
@93lovelylady i don't agree it was our perspective. watch the whole,brilliant scene again, and you will notice, that every time the door goes, Tony looks up towards the door. and right before he does so, we always see a shot of his face, just like in the last second, then if it wouldn*t have turned black, we would have seen his view, of Meadow coming through the door, but he didn't see that anymore, because....
Ooooh! I just realized that.lolz you're right.But it was pretty funny how when this last episode first aired' when the screen went blank, everyone started to panic.xDD
@93lovelylady haha ..i can imagine that being a strange, strange moment...i have to admit that i only started watching the sopranos this year.i haven't had a tv in way over 10 years and so i only heard about this show when it originally aired on tv. i love the sopranos. and i've watched the whole thing like 3 or 4 times now and the ending is just brilliant. people saying it sucks seem to need everything spoonfed to them, typical for tv audiences...to me Tony got shot, but it don't matter really
@tubenshaft -- You are very right about that . . . (in that it's so typical that people need everything spoon-fed to them); unfortunately though, I find that it's not just TV audiences that need this.
@93lovelylady also...and David Chase worked on this final scene for a long time, i mean...it so briliant. have you noticed the words of the song? ok, Tony sitting there, choosing the song, it starts and Carm arrives, the way he looks at her, like a young boy in love and the words "just a small town girl..", then cut to Tony "just a city boy..." then his son arrives, they seem to have overcome their basic differences and the worried expression of Med, like she "knows/anticipates" sth...
@tubenshaft to me, those last couple of minutes of the series show and reflect Tony's life, everything he truely loved and the one thing he loved the most, above everthing, his daughter, he doesn't see her ...
That is very true.^w^ I started watching the sopranos when it first aired xDD I lol'd at when the son got a 96 on his spelling test and tony was like: where are the ther 4 points? xDD but later in the series I didnt get to watch it because of school and all.I came in on the last couple of episodes.The ending was pretty great though.And I kinda laughed when everyone paniced about the last 30 seconds being a black screen
ya thats what i thought happened when i first watched the ending. that tony was killed. there was another gangster flick where the killer went into a bathroom and got a gun that was planted earlier and came out shooting, i forget the name of it, but once i saw the mysterious man walk to the bathroom, i immediately thought of that old flick, and it looks like thats what the director did.
After a 2nd viewing of the series, I now appreciate the ending, and I want to thank Chase for allowing me to xperience vicarious power, overindulgence, and violence w/o the consequences. Showing us Tony's fate would have ruined that for me. Tony whacked? I agree with those who say that we, the audience, are the ones who got whacked, not Tony. In my opinion, given what is shown and discussed in the show, Tony is arrested. I would rather Chase clarify Tony's statement, "I get!" from S6E18.
@adiqtiv for the "i get it" part, you don't have to ask mr.chase but take some peyote, mushrooms or lsd or the like yourself. then you'll understand that expression.
Tony died. Bell rings, he looks up, POV. The final POV is black and silent due to Tony's death. The killer had a very clean shot from the bathroom exit, behind Tony.
@z3ph but the is the timing right? as soon as the guy walks in the bathroom meadow comes in and then the screen turns black show ends doesnt give the guy time to go all da way from da bathroom get a a gun and go towards tony
Thats exactly the way i think about it. This is a good ending. I think that he got clipped, thats obviously what they meant, but its good not to show that, so people can still have hope.
I don't get why so many people still question is. TONY IS DEAD people. Just like David Chase says. Its all there in that last episode. No open ending, nothing like that. It was obvious and apparent. Tony got whacked. Plain and simple.
@MrDreadedbwoy Also, in almost every other "hit" the guys walk right up and shoot. Why would MOJ wait at the bar when he could have walked in and capped Tony right away? Why would he just sit there? Obviously if he was going to kill Tony, he wouldn't have to further id him as he followed him there and knew it was him. There was no way he could have known that Tony was going to be at that family, as it was a family (AJ, Meadow and Carmella) decision to go there so how could a gun be planted?
@NewYorkCityUSA7 Are you fucking retarded? A Sopranos movie? Hahahaha!!! That's the single dumbest thing i've ever heard anyone say on here. Tony is dead and there will never be a movie. Period. Obviously the two brain cells are the only ones you have left.
they talk about everything going "black" many times throughout the series. "you wont even hear it when it happens" .. no music in the end credits.. (only episode to ever do that).. he was definately killed in the end.
@buggeazy102 I don't think the song was a real clue like some make it out to be. That song is often used for sentimental moments in movies. It was really touching in the roller skating scene from "Monster" for example. Given the song started at the exact moment Carmella walked in, I think it was to create a feeling more than anything. It makes us think about the 'happy days' when Carmella & Tony would have dated in the 80s & their lives (inc. AJ & Meadow) since then, which is Tony's life (death)
This is true, only Chase knows... or maybe Chase wanted simply to make an ending that was open to any interpretation we wanted it to be and therefore didn't know for sure himself? Maybe he wanted most people to feel closure, that Tony was dead but at the same time leave it open enough that he could roll that back later if he got an offer to make a Sopranos movie for big $
@ShayLee0501 there is no open interpretation ...Tony is dead. if you know the show then you know he is dead ..Remember Bobby and others talking about never hearing it coming? Silvio when that hit took place in front of him ...its happening before you even know it ...Tony is dead my friend.
@theenigmajjames Yeah yeah, you're preaching to the converted. I'm sure Tony was shot by the dude in the bathroom, to the right lower part of his head, without him seeing it coming. So... your point dear Sir?
@theenigmajjames Also you've been reading that dickhead's site 'the definite answer' too much. It's total crap that in the last season, the guys all talked about 'never hearing it come'. They never did. There was ONE conversation between Bobby and Tony himself, when Bobby said that. Then soon after, Bobby gets shot repeatedly in the chest AFTER SEEING IT COME. Not a recurring theme. I do believe Tony is meant to be dead, but I think Chase wanted to keep the chance of movie $ open.
@ShayLee0501 You talk about that guys site like I was the one saying that shit. I wasnt. There was no open interpretation. Not according to David Chase, you know, the creator. I mentioned that stuff about Bobby and Silvio because that is what David Chase talked about in an interview regarding the finale. I never said it was a recurring thing. I dont agree with most of the shit on that site. The fucking onion ring being like communion? Come on, that shit is lame. We agree there.
@theenigmajjames Sorry if u didn't read the site. I didn't mean to suggest you had said what he did, I just thought he may have influenced you. I agree it wasn't MEANT to be an open interpretation. I'm sure from Chase's comments he means for Tony to be dead. I just think he may be secretly hiding that he knew how variable public response would be (which it is, as more people think Tony lives or they aren't sure, than us who know he's dead) bc he didn't want to lose on a future movie offer's $
@ShayLee0501 I dont think theres any secret or that he wanted to have a lose for future movie deals ....he says it all in the first paragraph when he is asked the first question. It was definitive. No open doors ....nothing ...I really wanted to believe Tony was alive until I read this ...bigscreenlittlescreen(dot)net/2007/10/19/david-chase-talks-sopranos-closer-again/
@theenigmajjames I just read that, interesting article & confirms exactly what I believe. I'd forgotten Tony saying in an earlier season about how one day he'd just be sitting in a diner, a guy would come in & that would be it. It really rings a bell though. I think he did say that. I remember Jerry copping it & Silvio not hearing the shot until after Jerry fell. HOWEVER, Chase is still being coy. He won't confirm 100% or just come out & say it. I think he hasn't given up on a movie deal is all
@ShayLee0501 He says himself he's not being coy, he says it like it is. Its all there in that episode. I really dont think he is holding out on a movie. James Gandolfini wouldn't do it anyways I dont think. But thats just my view of things. We dont have to agree 100%. If we both can agree Tony got whacked, then thats good enough for me. Be well my friend. Btw. Do you own the whole series? If not, if you want them, I have download links to every episode. Mp4 playable on Quicktime. Let me know.
@theenigmajjames Just bc he says he's not being coy, doesn't mean he's not! It's not like producers R honest all the time haha. But yeah, I'm sure he meant to end on a big note & from an artistic point of view, all the shots, angles, suggestions, highlights of that scene & previous ones (like when Silvio didn't hear Jerry get shot until he started to fall) indicate Tony got whacked. Yeah I have them all. I just think Chase wanted Tony to be dead, but left a window in case the movie $ came.
@ShayLee0501 Well ...I disagree personally ....but hey ...we dont have to agree ..as long as we can debate and discuss an issue without getting stupid like most people tend to do on youtube ...then I am all for that ...be well my friend ...
@theenigmajjames Thanks & yeah that's totally cool with me. I personally enjoy a good debate. It opens me up new ideas. I like to play devil's advocate & deliberately provoke a civil argument to give people the best opportunity to change my mind or teach me something new. Also yeah, it's ridiculous how many people on YouTube resort to slinging personal insults when there is no reason for them to be so emotionally invested in someone else's opinion. The interesting people make up for it though.
@NewYorkCityUSA7 Only an idiot would make that statement. You obviously dont understand dramatic devices or art very well. No doubt youre the type who watched the show for the gangster shit and the artistic direction of that masterpiece was completley lost on you. It's very clear what happened to Tony and it left you wanting more. THAT was Chases goal and he accomplished it beautifully.
@8andimpala Dude you're nothing but another asshole with an opinion on YouTube just like the rest of us. Who gives a shit what I liked about the show, the point is I liked the show. I did like the gangster shit and story lines just like most of the people who watched the show did. The way it ended was just a bullshit way to make sure he can do a Sopranos movie later on. Anyone who can rub two brain cells together can see that so spare me the artistic bullshit.
YOU GUYS ARE ALL WRONG HE DIDN'T DIED HE GOT BUSTED THE SOPRANOS ARE BASED ON THE JERSEY FAMILY OF THE 90'S CALLED THE DECAVALCANTES AND THE REAL TONY SOPRANO WAS VINNIE OCEAN HE TURNED INTO A RAT DIDN'T YOU GUYS SEE IN THE LAST EPISODE TONY TALKING TO HIS LAWYER, HIS LAWYER TOLD HIM THAT CARLO HAD TURNED INTO A RAT AND WAS GOING TO TESTIFY THATS WHY TONY GOT MAD THEY NEVER DISCUSSED ANYMORE OF THAT BUT I THINK HE GOT BUSTED BY THE FBI IT'S DUMB TO THINK HE WAS KILLED
tony definetly got whacked in an earlier episode him & bobby are talking about getting shot & bobby asks what do u think its like & tony says it just turns black....
That's actually not true. Tony never said anything about blackness in regard to being shot. Bobby said, "You probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?" Tony replied, "Ask your friend on the wall."
He said the thing about cutting to black in the first season, then he had the convo with bacala, and then on an episode later he flashed back to said convo. but the cut to black comment he made about death took place waaaay earlier in the show
Tony screamed, "Everything's black!" during his dream in the second season finale, "Funhouse." But it wasn't in relation to being shot or killed. The conversation with Bobby--"You probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?"--took place in the 6B premiere, "Soprano Home Movies," and the flashback to that comment occurred in "Blue Comet," the second-to-last episode of the series.
Unless you can cite something of which I'm unaware.
@TheRandomNess77 HE DIDN'T DIED YOU MISINTERPRETED HE NEVER SAID EVERYTHING TURNS BLACK HE SAID ASK YOUR FRIEND IN THE WALL HE NEVER ADMITTED PLUS THE REAL TONY SOPRANI VINNIE OCEAN WAS NOT KILLED HE WAS BUSTED AND TURNED INTO A RAT THE SOPRANOS IS BASED ON THE DECALVALCANTES THE JERSEY MOB
I think what he means by the future for Tony and Carmella was Paranoia he'd be paranoid always looking over his shoulder for somebody after him. You never know and us the audience..we're left in the dark literally as to what actually does happen next.
he should have made it a better ending,if nothing else he should have done it for his loyal followers of the series.i for one felt robbed and i wanted a defo closure.shame on you david chase.you left it open so in few years if there was a movie deal in the offering you could cash in.simple as that
i think we've all pretty much come to the conclusion that tony died, i mean imagine if tony soprano were a real person, a real man who had made himself a successful living out of human misery, a man who has hurt so many and taken from society as a whole. now ask ya self how you think a man like that would end up? would he retire down to miami by himself a nice house on the beach and live the rest of his days in peace enjoying some grandkids? or would he end up with his brains on the floor?
i dont wana believe that tony gets whacked but does seem that way,there were too many shady guys in the cafe.hoping that david chase left it open so that there can some day b another series,please god!!!
Did anyone notice that the african american fellow standing closest to us, has sort of a bulge above his waistband? it looks like a coffee cup when i enlarged it to fourhundred and fifty. the problem with the guy members only jacket, is that he is not able to see when meadow comes into the restaurant. plus, she was just at the door, and the guy in the bathroom could have waited till neadiw sat diwb, i think the two african american guys did it, one trusned and got meadow, the one closest to door
What actually happened is the series ended at that point and we the viewers may never know what really happened to Tony and his family. I believe this was the Authors intention and we the viewers weren't supposed to like it. "You can't always get what you want."
MegaDaz1984 2 weeks ago
The way I see it is why would the guy have to retrieve the gun from the toilet? In the godfather it was there because he knew he'd be searched before going into the restaurant and so couldn't have it on him. But nobody would search this guy so if he was gonna kill Tony surely he'd already have the gun on him.
MegaDaz1984 3 weeks ago
what a brilliant ending for the show! as the time passes it just gets better! in the final scene chase created a state of flux (when things could go either way), and thus he transcended his show to our lives. we continue to live different outcomes of his characters. cause the first thing we thought after seeing the black screen is: what happens (next)? that's the essence and question we need to try answering for ourselves. while trying that "don't stop believing" keeps playing in our heads.

One other important factor, is that if you have seen The Road, the man, right before he shoots the cannibal near the beginning, explains that he would not hear the sound of the gun shot because the bullet would travel faster than sound. That is why we never hear a gunshot in my opinion.
Divideo 1 month ago
There are the symbols of 3 in the final scene that everyone is aware of. The ones that I noticed was that carm was the 3rd person to enter the restaurant as Tony was looking up for. There were 3 boy scouts sitting at a table. The hunting looking guy received his coffee with 3 creamers. It took Meadow 3 attempts to park the car. And to push this even further "Don't Stop Believing" is 3 words. lol.
Divideo 1 month ago

007gmoney 1 month ago
@007gmoney

The screen went black because Tony was killed. He looked up to see his daughter and was shot in the head by the guy in the jacket.

But what about the argument about people saying that there was no reason for him to be killed? Something about the thing in NY was settled and he had no enemies anymore. So why would he be killed? Eager for responses :D
skittlesareyum48 2 months ago
tony was killed by MOG. the whole series lead up to it. there's a bunch of pointers but they've all been done to death (pun intended), and lets leave it at that.
the real question is who was behind the hit.
my theory is Little Carmine - he was stirring the NY NJ war from the start in a very subtle way. there was a power vacuum after, the Sopranos crew were decimated, Tony was old news and time was right to start anew. like johnny sac said "they let things go when youre earning"

@pmurph019
TheFF722 3 months ago
@only1mossberg
Why in the world the guy in the Jacket go in to the bathroom to get a gun? It is not like he got patted down before entering the Diner. I mean... if he was going to kill Tony he would have went in there blasting. He would not have sat down for a cup of coffee.
TheFF722 3 months ago
@TheFF722 You have no fuckin brain idiot. He sat down and ordered coffee so he wouldnt look suspicious, then he went into the bathroom so he can get ready for the kill, plus he would have a clear shot from the bathroom exit. If Meadow "The Guardian Angel" would of made it to the table she would have saved Tony, but she was too late.
CF40 3 months ago
@CF40
You shouldn't be calling people "idiot."
DetectiveCrockett77 2 months ago
@DetectiveCrockett77 Thats not the point... it doesnt matter if he killed Tony right away or went to the bathroom first. There are dozens of clues throughout the series that are a dead giveaway that Tony will be whacked. And in the final scene, every time the little doorbell rings the camera shows Tonys face, then the camera shows what Tony sees through his eyes. When Meadow enters, we see Tonys face, then through his eye, but all we see is black because thats what he sees, nothing, hes dead
CF40 2 months ago
@CF40

CF40 2 months ago
@CF40

DetectiveCrockett77 2 months ago
@DetectiveCrockett77 Yes "3 strikes your out" is evidence.... when Tony gets out of the hospital he says "my uncle tried to kill me twice, well 3 strikes your out". And the number 3 is all over the series. But the reach out wasnt because of Coco. Butch pretty much told Tony that he can go ahead and take out Phil, but he cant help him out by telling him where Phils hiding, because another guy at the sit down could tell Phil then have Butch popped. "I bet you never even hear it when it happens
CF40 2 months ago
@CF40

DetectiveCrockett77 2 months ago
@DetectiveCrockett77 Ok i understand that but i dont understand why you think T didnt get popped in the final scene.... its literally all there.
CF40 2 months ago
@CF40
"Whether it happened that night or some other night . . ."
DetectiveCrockett77 2 months ago
@DetectiveCrockett77 The moral of the Sopranos is that Tony put his mafia family before his real family. When he was in his coma his trip to Costa Mesa was a revelation and realized his real family comes first. In the episode when Chris dies his trip to Vegas is the opposite, he cheats his wife and his fate is death. At the end of that episode hes looking at the sun in the desert and its flashed like the beacon in his coma. Paulie was saved in the episode when he forgives Nucci.
CF40 2 months ago
@CF40
DetectiveCrockett77 2 months ago
@DetectiveCrockett77 @DetectiveCrockett77 No shit.

DetectiveCrockett77 2 months ago
@DetectiveCrockett77 Lol just forget. Your problem is you dont see the Sopranos is more than just a show to entertain us, its a puzzle that goes by an important "moral" that Tony must follow. The same moral is in the Godfather. Michael Corleone puts his mafia family before his wife and kids and look what happens, he doesnt die but he loses his entire family through death and divorce. Tony on the other hand get killed infront of his family just like how Phil did.
CF40 2 months ago
@CF40
I love you people.
(more)
DetectiveCrockett77 2 months ago
@CF40 (from before)
Moreover, as to your claim that the show was a "puzzle," with a "moral," of course it was.
DetectiveCrockett77 2 months ago
@DetectiveCrockett77 What does other shows that have a puzzle have to do with the Sopranos. I didn't just read the masterofsopranos blog and accept it at face value, I have all 86 episodes on my computer and studied them all and put alot of thought into that blog. Do you really think David Chase would bother making 86 episodes just to have an ending that cuts black and doesnt mean anything? You dont have an open mind.
CF40 2 months ago
@CF40
It's a comparison, numbnuts. ;)
DetectiveCrockett77 2 months ago
@DetectiveCrockett77 Im sick of responding to this.

@CF40
So why are you?
DetectiveCrockett77 2 months ago
@DetectiveCrockett77 And that Ojibwa saying "Sometimes I go about in pity for myself, all the while a great wind carrys me across the sky". When Paulie forgives Nucci he looks out the window and watches wind brush against leaves (and he sees the Virgin Mary). When Tony is saved from his trip he hears Meadows voice and sees wind brushing against some trees. Now go to the final episode, T is raking leaves in his yard and looks up, the trees are all dead and theres no wind. Its all there
CF40 2 months ago
@CF40
Right . . . but how does that serve as any sort of "evidence" that Tony was killed?
DetectiveCrockett77 2 months ago
@DetectiveCrockett77 I just wanted to Interject here for a moment. I like the debate however I want to tackle the question of Tony being killed or living on. I watched over the series again and their is great symbolism held throughout specific episodes that draw conclusions to tony's fate. However many are irrelevant to the final episode and only serve purpose to his mental states and how they effect his relationship with his family. I'm a huge mob movie buff and grew up in Ozone Park Queens

Respond to this video...

Tony flipped when arrested which was imminent as he admits there is going to be a trial to his wife at the diner.
Man in Jacket would have killed him BEFORE entering bathroom.
Black screen represents bleak future for Tony no matter what.
Black guys have NOTHING to do with Tony.
The scene represents the general paranoia through Tony's eyes of being a Mafia Boss.

But in the Italian Mob an entire family would never have been killed

if you rememeber the FBI agent Harris has already explained how sick leotardo was trying to set up a female agent for an attack and he always went on about making tony suffer like he did when tony b killed his brother. The screen at the end of the final episode goes black as its looking at Tony and AJ was sitting in that seat. I think that in a final act of revenge the guy, who if you read the credits was a leotardo, comes out of the WC and whacks AJ!!!
MrLucab79 7 months ago
@MrLucab79 Oooh. Yeah! I like that idea! Good hypothesis! I guess part of it is that I never liked AJ's character, but the parallel of a Leoptardo getting revenge for a relative's murder makes sense. There was (in support of your theory) an episode with a blown Sit-Down between Leotardo's people and Tony wherein Phil says something to the effect of, "You don't know what it's like to have a family member murdered...maybe I CAN MAKE THAT HAPPEN FOR YOU SOMEDAY." @tubenshaft -- You are very right about that . . . (in that it's so typical that people need everything spoon-fed to them); unfortunately though, I find that it's not just TV audiences that need this.
MattSchoch 6 months ago
@93lovelylady also...and David Chase worked on this final scene for a long time, i mean...it so briliant. have you noticed the words of the song? ok, Tony sitting there, choosing the song, it starts and Carm arrives, the way he looks at her, like a young boy in love and the words "just a small town girl..", then cut to Tony "just a city boy..." then his son arrives, they seem to have overcome their basic differences and the worried expression of Med, like she "knows/anticipates" sth...
tubenshaft 7 months ago
@tubenshaft to me, those last couple of minutes of the series show and reflect Tony's life, everything he truely loved and the one thing he loved the most, above everthing, his daughter, he doesn't see her ...
tubenshaft 7 months ago
@tubenshaft
93lovelylady 7 months ago
@tubenshaft -- I thought the exact same thing about the choice of the song. You see/understand a lot and are very intuitive.
MattSchoch 6 months ago
They could have picked a better ending song. Journey sucks cock
4AJWP 8 months ago
ya thats what i thought happened when i first watched the ending. that tony was killed. there was another gangster flick where the killer went into a bathroom and got a gun that was planted earlier and came out shooting, i forget the name of it, but once i saw the mysterious man walk to the bathroom, i immediately thought of that old flick, and it looks like thats what the director did.

I would rather Chase clarify Tony's statement, "I get!" from S6E18.
adiqtiv 8 months ago
@adiqtiv for the "i get it" part, you don't have to ask mr.chase but take some peyote, mushrooms or lsd or the like yourself. then you'll understand that expression.
tubenshaft 7 months ago
I prefer to be optimistic and say tony was not clipped
corneliam1969 8 months ago
Tony died. Bell rings, he looks up, POV. The final POV is black and silent due to Tony's death. The killer had a very clean shot from the bathroom exit, behind Tony.
xx
z3ph 8 months ago
@z3ph but the is the timing right? as soon as the guy walks in the bathroom meadow comes in and then the screen turns black show ends doesnt give the guy time to go all da way from da bathroom get a a gun and go towards tony
latincupidd 8 months ago
Thats exactly the way i think about it. This is a good ending. I think that he got clipped, thats obviously what they meant, but its good not to show that, so people can still have hope.
83UtrechtNL 8 months ago
I don't get why so many people still question is. TONY IS DEAD people. Just like David Chase says. Its all there in that last episode. No open ending, nothing like that. It was obvious and apparent. Tony got whacked. Plain and simple.
theenigmajjames 9 months ago
Don't think he died. Who would have put the hit on him? He squashed the beef with the other family.
MrDreadedbwoy 9 months ago
@MrDreadedbwoy Also, in almost every other "hit" the guys walk right up and shoot. Why would MOJ wait at the bar when he could have walked in and capped Tony right away? Why would he just sit there? Obviously if he was going to kill Tony, he wouldn't have to further id him as he followed him there and knew it was him. There was no way he could have known that Tony was going to be at that family, as it was a family (AJ, Meadow and Carmella) decision to go there so how could a gun be planted?
MrDreadedbwoy 9 months ago
@ImmortalEye666 Best comment on the whole thread!
8andimpala 9 months ago
@NewYorkCityUSA7 Are you fucking retarded? A Sopranos movie? Hahahaha!!! That's the single dumbest thing i've ever heard anyone say on here. Tony is dead and there will never be a movie. Period. Obviously the two brain cells are the only ones you have left.
8andimpala 9 months ago
david chase is the man best ending ever
malcolmscotty1 9 months ago
they talk about everything going "black" many times throughout the series. "you wont even hear it when it happens" .. no music in the end credits.. (only episode to ever do that).. he was definately killed in the end.

I love it how Chase's issued statements are as abstract as the Final episodes...in other words, don't stop believing ;-)

tony got whacked...no doubt
mrbombazticful 10 months ago
well dose the ending song mean anything "dont stop beliving" in tony?
buggeazy102 10 months ago
@buggeazy102 I don't think the song was a real clue like some make it out to be. That song is often used for sentimental moments in movies. It was really touching in the roller skating scene from "Monster" for example. Given the song started at the exact moment Carmella walked in, I think it was to create a feeling more than anything. It makes us think about the 'happy days' when Carmella & Tony would have dated in the 80s & their lives (inc. AJ & Meadow) since then, which is Tony's life (death)
ShayLee0501 9 months ago
@ShayLee0501 WELL ONLY CHASE KNOWS
buggeazy102 9 months ago
This is true, only Chase knows... or maybe Chase wanted simply to make an ending that was open to any interpretation we wanted it to be and therefore didn't know for sure himself? Maybe he wanted most people to feel closure, that Tony was dead but at the same time leave it open enough that he could roll that back later if he got an offer to make a Sopranos movie for big $
ShayLee0501 9 months ago
@ShayLee0501 there is no open interpretation ...Tony is dead. if you know the show then you know he is dead ..Remember Bobby and others talking about never hearing it coming? Silvio when that hit took place in front of him ...its happening before you even know it ...Tony is dead my friend.
theenigmajjames 9 months ago
@theenigmajjames Yeah yeah, you're preaching to the converted. I'm sure Tony was shot by the dude in the bathroom, to the right lower part of his head, without him seeing it coming. So... your point dear Sir?
ShayLee0501 9 months ago
@theenigmajjames Also you've been reading that dickhead's site 'the definite answer' too much. It's total crap that in the last season, the guys all talked about 'never hearing it come'. They never did. There was ONE conversation between Bobby and Tony himself, when Bobby said that. Then soon after, Bobby gets shot repeatedly in the chest AFTER SEEING IT COME. Not a recurring theme. I do believe Tony is meant to be dead, but I think Chase wanted to keep the chance of movie $ open.
ShayLee0501 9 months ago
@ShayLee0501 You talk about that guys site like I was the one saying that shit. I wasnt. There was no open interpretation. Not according to David Chase, you know, the creator. I mentioned that stuff about Bobby and Silvio because that is what David Chase talked about in an interview regarding the finale. I never said it was a recurring thing. I dont agree with most of the shit on that site. The fucking onion ring being like communion? Come on, that shit is lame. We agree there.
theenigmajjames 9 months ago
@theenigmajjames Sorry if u didn't read the site. I didn't mean to suggest you had said what he did, I just thought he may have influenced you. I agree it wasn't MEANT to be an open interpretation. I'm sure from Chase's comments he means for Tony to be dead. I just think he may be secretly hiding that he knew how variable public response would be (which it is, as more people think Tony lives or they aren't sure, than us who know he's dead) bc he didn't want to lose on a future movie offer's $
ShayLee0501 9 months ago
@ShayLee0501 I dont think theres any secret or that he wanted to have a lose for future movie deals ....he says it all in the first paragraph when he is asked the first question. It was definitive. No open doors ....nothing ...I really wanted to believe Tony was alive until I read this ...bigscreenlittlescreen(dot)net/2007/10/19/david-chase-talks-sopranos-closer-again/
theenigmajjames 8 months ago
@theenigmajjames I just read that, interesting article & confirms exactly what I believe. I'd forgotten Tony saying in an earlier season about how one day he'd just be sitting in a diner, a guy would come in & that would be it. It really rings a bell though. I think he did say that. I remember Jerry copping it & Silvio not hearing the shot until after Jerry fell. HOWEVER, Chase is still being coy. He won't confirm 100% or just come out & say it. I think he hasn't given up on a movie deal is all
ShayLee0501 8 months ago
@ShayLee0501 He says himself he's not being coy, he says it like it is. Its all there in that episode. I really dont think he is holding out on a movie. James Gandolfini wouldn't do it anyways I dont think. But thats just my view of things. We dont have to agree 100%. If we both can agree Tony got whacked, then thats good enough for me. Be well my friend. Btw. Do you own the whole series? If not, if you want them, I have download links to every episode. Mp4 playable on Quicktime. Let me know.
theenigmajjames 8 months ago
@theenigmajjames Just bc he says he's not being coy, doesn't mean he's not! It's not like producers R honest all the time haha. But yeah, I'm sure he meant to end on a big note & from an artistic point of view, all the shots, angles, suggestions, highlights of that scene & previous ones (like when Silvio didn't hear Jerry get shot until he started to fall) indicate Tony got whacked. Yeah I have them all. I just think Chase wanted Tony to be dead, but left a window in case the movie $ came.
ShayLee0501 8 months ago
@ShayLee0501 Well ...I disagree personally ....but hey ...we dont have to agree ..as long as we can debate and discuss an issue without getting stupid like most people tend to do on youtube ...then I am all for that ...be well my friend ...
theenigmajjames 8 months ago
@theenigmajjames Thanks & yeah that's totally cool with me. I personally enjoy a good debate. It opens me up new ideas. I like to play devil's advocate & deliberately provoke a civil argument to give people the best opportunity to change my mind or teach me something new. Also yeah, it's ridiculous how many people on YouTube resort to slinging personal insults when there is no reason for them to be so emotionally invested in someone else's opinion. The interesting people make up for it though.
ShayLee0501 8 months ago
Maybe it was supposed to symbolize the "death" of the series.
SoleMan117 10 months ago
Only a homo would like that ending.....Chase fucked us all over.
NewYorkCityUSA7 10 months ago
@NewYorkCityUSA7 Only an idiot would make that statement. You obviously dont understand dramatic devices or art very well. No doubt youre the type who watched the show for the gangster shit and the artistic direction of that masterpiece was completley lost on you. It's very clear what happened to Tony and it left you wanting more. THAT was Chases goal and he accomplished it beautifully.
8andimpala 9 months ago
@8andimpala Dude you're nothing but another asshole with an opinion on YouTube just like the rest of us. Who gives a shit what I liked about the show, the point is I liked the show. I did like the gangster shit and story lines just like most of the people who watched the show did. The way it ended was just a bullshit way to make sure he can do a Sopranos movie later on. Anyone who can rub two brain cells together can see that so spare me the artistic bullshit.

tony definetly got whacked in an earlier episode him & bobby are talking about getting shot & bobby asks what do u think its like & tony says it just turns black....
i thought it was a brilliant ending...loved it!
TheRandomNess77 11 months ago
@TheRandomNess77
That's actually not true. Tony never said anything about blackness in regard to being shot. Bobby said, "You probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?" Tony replied, "Ask your friend on the wall."
DetectiveCrockett77 11 months ago
@DetectiveCrockett77
He said the thing about cutting to black in the first season, then he had the convo with bacala, and then on an episode later he flashed back to said convo. but the cut to black comment he made about death took place waaaay earlier in the show
TGentz 11 months ago
@TGentz
Nope.
DetectiveCrockett77 11 months ago

You never know and us the audience..we're left in the dark literally as to what actually does happen next.
michiyoyoshiku 11 months ago
he should have made it a better ending,if nothing else he should have done it for his loyal followers of the series.i for one felt robbed and i wanted a defo closure.shame on you david chase.you left it open so in few years if there was a movie deal in the offering you could cash in.simple as that
relmmih6 1 year ago
i think we've all pretty much come to the conclusion that tony died, i mean imagine if tony soprano were a real person, a real man who had made himself a successful living out of human misery, a man who has hurt so many and taken from society as a whole. now ask ya self how you think a man like that would end up? would he retire down to miami by himself a nice house on the beach and live the rest of his days in peace enjoying some grandkids? or would he end up with his brains on the floor?
