Anybody here know if the subaru forester 09 exhaust tips make sound meaner? I am wondering if I should purchase them?

Exhaust tips will not do anything except "improve" its looks. A catback exhaust will change the sound.

a backbox will make it sound loads better

You'll need atleast a catback (preferably a turboback, if you have an XT)

Typically, EJ25T's (Turbocharged) will have a deeper and throatier exhaust note than your N/A EJ25; given that header lengths are kept uneven.
