@david222444 CO2 is a greenhouse gas. So is water vapor, so are a lot of things. They are harmless in small amounts. However increasing the amount of a greenhouse gas increases the amount of sunlight that is re-reflected upon the earth. Since the industrial revolution, we've been burning carbon, turning it into CO2, and sending it upto the atmosphere in alarming amounts. Not a harmless byproduct.
Okay, I'm going to ignore all the debates below me and ask a question: Why is everyone pushing so much for electric cars? I realize they wont use gasoline, which is good, but to get the electricity we'll just be burning coal, another fossil fuel, and this will still produce CO2, so I don't feel like it's much of a step up.
@QueenMagslieofSweden An electric car can get cleaner (and cheaper to operate) over time as generation improves. With gasoline-powered car, you need to replace the cars to reduce pollution.
Additionally, if your pollution is collected into a small number of areas, you can much more easily capture it, and locate it further from population centers. Less city smog = better health. (Banning leaded gas has measurable raised average intelligence of the population. Let's eliminate smog altogether.)

Just to clarify, cap and trade doesn't target "pollution", it targets co2 which is a colourless, odourless and harmless gas. The whole problem with cap and trade is that it's based on the assumption that humans are changing the climate and the science to support this is dubious at best. Reality 101: a nations energy burn rate and its GDP are connected; a large part of US energy requirements are carbon-based; cap-and-trade reduces usage of carbon-based fuels; and the current fuel balances are market based. Given this, if you clamp C02 emission by force (taxing carbon/ 'cap-and-trade'), you reduce the US energy burn rate, in turn reducing economic activity, and in turn lowering everyone's standard of life.

And all those bad numbers are still going up, because China's No. 1 goal is increasing industrial production, not protecting the environment.

I hope you know that Japan, which is about a third of our size, pollutes more than us. So does China. So why do people think America is such an evil country? Driving your Prius really won't impact the environment. Well yes and no. It is a market to limit smoke. Think of it like a golf score. The lower (or less smoke) the better. If you go too high, you can buy permits from those companies that were well under target. While this doesn't necessarily limit the total amount of pollution, it provides financial incentive to do so. Also, for those companies going over the limit, it is a good way to generate revenue w/o hurting the little guy.

@MrMick73 Yes carbon dioxide occurs naturally, but anything becomes harmful if too much of it is used. Even water's harmful if you drink too much too quikcly. Scientists don't believe an C02 is bad, but rather too much of it. There are some scientists who don't believe global climate change is partially caused by humans, but the vast majority do. These are scientists from seperate organizations, spanning over 100 different countries.

One problem... Sulphur Dioxide Cap and Trade was easy - put a relatively cheap filter on the exhaust stack of the coal plant - SOx gone. You can't do this to CO2. The analogy of a successly Cap and Trade scheme to reduce pollution is a non-sequitor, misinformation and thus pretty much irrelevent to C02.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is nothing more than a political body with scientific trappings designed to promote that goal. That's why it never polled the scientists it uses, the majority of whom are not scientists at all but government functionaries in on the scam. it just uses them to advance a pre-ordained conclusion.
For economically illiterate leftists, this no doubt sounds like a good deal. But to the any rational American, it's JUST PLAIN NUTS. Cap and tax is nothing more than an elaborate plan to redistribute the world's wealth using environmental scare tactics as the propellant and the U.N. as its transfer mechanism, while making some people bloody rich.

I'm taking a uni course on environmental management, and I'm really into cap and trade and carbon taxes and stuff, but I still tend to get confused at the implications of emissions versus emissions intensity. Here in Alberta a lot of the policies are baselined to emissions intensity, and I think it's rather a cop out because you can ramp up production and still end up emitting the same amount of CO2.
You just listed quite a few reasons why Cap nTrade is a terrible idea and why it's ripe for abuse. They have cap and trade in Europe and results? Nothing like what you described. In fact, the heaviest polluters did get more carbon credits just as you explained but then sold them at a great profit while their own pollution went (c'mon I know you know this) UP. However increasing the amount of a greenhouse gas increases the amount of sunlight that is re-reflected upon the earth. Since the industrial revolution, we've been burning carbon, turning it into CO2, and sending it upto the atmosphere in alarming amounts. Not a harmless byproduct.

I realize they wont use gasoline, which is good, but to get the electricity we'll just be burning coal, another fossil fuel, and this will still produce CO2, so I don't feel like it's much of a step up.

Additionally, if your pollution is collected into a small number of areas, you can much more easily capture it, and locate it further from population centers. Less city smog = better health. (Banning leaded gas has measurable raised average intelligence of the population. Let's eliminate smog altogether.)

Though is is a rather good summary of what cap and trade is in the most broad sense, i think its a bit of an over glorification. Rising Co2 levels are without a doubt highly problematic in their predicted repercussions, but actually piecing together a functional cap and trade system would be an almost unsurmountable task, for many reasons.

Using numbers from the US DOE, China alone will be emitting ~25Gt CO2 by yr 2050, in a 'bus. as usual' scenario, or ~19Gt in an 'extreme austerity' scenario. This ignores The other 2 economies which will have surpassed the US in CO2 emissions by then. Compare that with GLOBAL CO2 emissions of a mere 8Gt for the yr 2005 from CDIAC. Given the reality of the above numbers, what kind of fool could possibly believe that it's possible to trim CO2 emissions by ANY amount, by ANY scheme? 50Gt by 2050!

This is strange. CO2 is good for plants, and has not been shown to contribute to warming in a dangerous way. CO2 is a trace gas, to which our contribution has been minimal. This tax is just a power grab, to begin a global governance, run by un-elected, appointed, officials. That sounds a lot more dangerous, than adding a little more of a life giving gas. If you regulate CO2, you regulate life on Earth. I don't think they will get it through, although i thought that about obama-care too.

Reality 101: a nations energy burn rate and its GDP are connected; a large part of US energy requirements are carbon-based; cap-and-trade reduces usage of carbon-based fuels; and the current fuel balances are market based. Given this, if you clamp C02 emission by force (taxing carbon/ 'cap-and-trade'), you reduce the US energy burn rate, in turn reducing economic activity, and in turn lowering everyone's standard of life.

With those two countries being allowed to just pollute away it should be clear to anyone with half a brain that it's nothing more then a tax and a vehicle to kill any hope in this country of a true recovery that isn't government mandated and initiated. I hope you know that Japan, which is about a third of our size, pollutes more than us. So does China. So why do people think America is such an evil country? Driving your Prius really won't impact the environment. Volcanos pollute way more then us, and water vapor [from bodies of water such as the oceans] add more green house gases to the atmosphere then just us breathing. The earth can take care of itself.

I do not support cap and trade but I like that you where willing to list the possible downsides of cap and trade as well of the planned benefits.
In order to know if it will have its intended effect really depends on how far prices on goods inflate as a direct result of this bill. 7$ a gallon gas dosn't sound that good to me and I won't drive a hybrid car EVER! Ill wait until electrics are solod before switching from pure gasoline.

Well yes and no. It is a market to limit smoke. Think of it like a golf score. The lower (or less smoke) the better. If you go too high, you can buy permits from those companies that were well under target. While this doesn't necessarily limit the total amount of pollution, it provides financial incentive to do so. Also, for those companies going over the limit, it is a good way to generate revenue w/o hurting the little guy.

@MrMick73 Yes carbon dioxide occurs naturally, but anything becomes harmful if too much of it is used. Even water's harmful if you drink too much too quikcly. Scientists don't believe an C02 is bad, but rather too much of it. There are some scientists who don't believe global climate change is partially caused by humans, but the vast majority do. These are scientists from seperate organizations, spanning over 100 different countries.

Cap and trade: A draconian tax designed to drive world economies into poverty and net the bankers trillions based on zero scientific evidence.
SO2 is not a valid analogy as reduction of output obviously hasn't the same effect on energy production otherwise logic would dictate the costs are passed on to citizens.
The lessening of reduction costs only helps the company that can easily reduce emissions because they're first world modern, they sell credits to poorer countries bankrupting them.

Like the explanation, I work in the green energy industry, and I can concur with your eloquent synopsis of Cap and Trade.
One problem... Sulphur Dioxide Cap and Trade was easy - put a relatively cheap filter on the exhaust stack of the coal plant - SOx gone. You can't do this to CO2. The analogy of a successly Cap and Trade scheme to reduce pollution is a non-sequitor, misinformation and thus pretty much irrelevent to C02.

This silly video is fundamentally flawed because carbon dioxide is not a pollutant, but a beneficial gas that is a natural and beneficial component of life on earth. What's more, there is ZERO proof that carbon dioxide has caused the small amount of warming we have experienced since the advent of temperature readings. recordkeeping began contradict this thesis. It's only in the period from 1978 to 1996 that we even have a correspondence between rising carbon dioxide and rising temperatures.

this bill mandates all electrical services lines meet higher standards, utilities go up. this bill incorprates more smart grid and opens the market, meaning you use to much a/c a peak time the utility company regulates the controll. to much heating use, utilities regulate it. how? remote control. fridge set to low, they can regulate it.

Can you make a video discussing the differences between emissions and emissions intensity? I'm taking a uni course on environmental management, and I'm really into cap and trade and carbon taxes and stuff, but I still tend to get confused at the implications of emissions versus emissions intensity. Here in Alberta a lot of the policies are baselined to emissions intensity, and I think it's rather a cop out because you can ramp up production and still end up emitting the same amount of CO2.
