It is one of the best renditions I've heard. He made so many octave changes leading to the climax! I'm not sure if he is still living or not, but I'm sure he brought a lot of joy not only with his voice, but also w/his Gomer Pyle character.
Every artist, actor, singer, dancer, painter has a masterpiece inside them. When it comes out anything afterward pales by comparison. This is Jim's masterpiece, and its glorious!!
There's a reason for the additional lyrics. The song came from Man Of LaMacha it is sung in the middle of the production with the words that most of us know. But then it is reprised for the finale with those additional lyrics.
So what Jim does here is combine the main song with the reprise sung at the finale. So when he starts over again after in which most versions end, he is singing the version reprised in the finale
@cmulwee001 Almost right. In the play "Man of LaMancha" the first part of the song is sung by Don Quixote, it is reprised at his death, and the final part is sung as Miguel Cervantes is led up the steps to the inquisition. All three parts that Jim sang appear in the play. He just put them together in one performance.
For those that think he is dead or has slipped into obscurity, he hasn't. Every year he signings "Back Home In Indiana" before the start of the Indy 500.
they don't have the karioke version of his version of this song, or any song! i mean come on! the man went gold (3 albums) and platinum (1 album)! his versns of songs are usually different than the originals, using orchastras and even different lyrics (love me with all of your heart is the most obvious). this man is just as good a singer as any performer, mabye better. at least we can release a karoke versn of his "impossible dream", his most famous song, it just seems right.
Jim Nabors is such a talented performer. Great voice, great expressions, and posture. I'm gonna spend the next 10 minutes or longer watching him to prepare help myself for my first audition.
I remember watching this episode when I was a kid. 3 key changes and holding the last note for 12 seconds. Nabors commands respect with that number with a live orchestra. Great Job Jim!!
@cordell01too THIS IS THE REAL AMERICAS GOT TALENT....AMERICAN IDOL...WHATEVER....HE WOULD WIN HANDS DOWN, WHO AGREES? WHY DON'T WE HAVE MUSIC LIKE THIS TODAY???? WILL IT EVER RETURN?
@bardockiv12 Yes it was, Gomer went to Washington D.C. and he lost his voice from being scared to sing. The night of that show when he was to sing he went for a walk in the night and when he was at the Lincloln Memorial started to read the words on it and got his voice back. This was to me the greatest song I ever heard sung and still sometimes think back on it. This was pure class!
@bardockiv12 : Thursday, February 23, 2012--6:02 am CST: Yes, this episode is called "The Show Must Go On, " the original airdate was February 3, 1967.
I like to pretend the "impossible dream" he's singing about is EASing, and it brings tears to my eyes.

@Elaine Marie 73. Jim Nabors IS in fact still around. He lives in Hawaii and still preforms!
And yes, nobody sings Impossible Dream like him.

Hiya, I've always loved the way Jim sang. To me, when he sings any kind of song, he puts a lot of emotion in the song he sings.

The best version of this song ever sung. Too bad Jim had such a hard life because of being falsely branded. Great talent and a good, good man.
