Hi Dominic. I am a Christian and Indian. Christianity came to India 2000 years ago, by St. Thomas; when the whole of Europe was still in the Dark ages. Christianity took its roots in India, because the Hindu ruling class patronised the religion. The arguments that happens in all churches are by new converts and upstarts. This is inevitable. A Hindu religion is not pagan, but an all inclusive HOLY with a highly philosophical outlook. Salvation is not only through Christ. Read John 14:2.

@betheman002 This Knanaya thing is a myth. There is no direct evidence before the 15th century of any Knanaya community. No one really knows who Thomas of Cana was. There were many Aramean Nestorians and Persian Nestorians that migrated to Kerala, so Thomas of Cana might have been one of those people. The other Nestorians are well documented due to the copper plates, but not Thomas of Cana. You people are most likely Jacobites that split from the other Nasranis.

This is certainly true of Western christianity (Catholic and protestant), but not of Orthodox Europe, which suffered as much from the Westerners. I actually took a class on Eastern Christianity. Many people forget that Christianity is essentially an eastern religion since it comes from the Middle East. These St. Thomas Christians were evangelized to before Christianity had reached many places in western Europe. They trace their Christianity to Apostle Thomas who supposedly came to India 50 AD, ten years after the Crucifixion. By the time of De Gama they would have been bring Catholicism, a different denomination.
It's understandable that you're not aware of how the Church (Christianity...THE CHURCH of CHRIST...) spread during the first century. Most Christians today have a sad lack of knowledge. Jesus did not have any restriction. Bread and Wine were part of every day meals. Stay with your Bible studies and be happy. Hi Dominic. I am a Christian and Indian. Christianity came to India 2000 years ago, by St. Thomas; when the whole of Europe was still in the Dark ages. Christianity took its roots in India, because the Hindu ruling class patronised the religion. The arguments that happens in all churches are by new converts and upstarts. This is inevitable. A Hindu religion is not pagan, but an all inclusive HOLY with a highly philosophical outlook. Salvation is not only through Christ. Read John 14:2.

@betheman002 This Knanaya thing is a myth. There is no direct evidence before the 15th century of any Knanaya community. No one really knows who Thomas of Cana was. There were many Aramean Nestorians and Persian Nestorians that migrated to Kerala, so Thomas of Cana might have been one of those people. The other Nestorians are well documented due to the copper plates, but not Thomas of Cana. You people are most likely Jacobites that split from the other Nasranis.

This is certainly true of Western christianity (Catholic and protestant), but not of Orthodox Europe, which suffered as much from the Westerners. The presence of such a church in India since ancient times tells a lot as to the condition of early christianity--as againt protestant "return to bible times" for instance.

@boyzffuture Europeans didnt discover India in 1400s, they were trying to find a faster route to India to trade. Christoper Columbus was trying to do the same, but found the Americas. Europeans like Greeks and Romans knew India existed, and traded with Indian empires.

I actually took a class on Eastern Christianity. Many people forget that Christianity is essentially an eastern religion since it comes from the Middle East. These St. Thomas Christians were evangelized to before Christianity had reached many places in western Europe. They trace their Christianity to Apostle Thomas who supposedly came to India 50 AD, ten years after the Crucifixion. By the time of De Gama they would have been bring Catholicism, a different denomination.

It's understandable that you're not aware of how the Church (Christianity...THE CHURCH of CHRIST...) spread during the first century. Most Christians today have a sad lack of knowledge. You would need to study the history of Orthodoxy (not Catholic) in the world. Plenty available on the internet, I'm sure. Blessings.

you know what, this is probably true. what the Vedic scriptures describe and teach has a lot in common with the Torah and Jewish practice in ceremonies and in concepts. the Vedas also refer to a God-Man who will be sacrificed for the remission of sins, and about a sacrificial lamb which will come back to life. there are many fascinating parallels, that is for sure.

actually, "Nasrani" comes from the word "Nazareth", the town where the Lord Jesus was from. Christians are sometimes called "Nasrani" by Muslims today. "Nazareth" is itself derived from a Hebrew word meaning "branch", a reference to the title "branch of David", a Messianic name for Jesus appearing in the Jewish scriptures.

actually, the Gospels indicate, based upon responses from people to Jesus, that He had been growing up and living in Nazareth until the days of His ministry. you're mistaking the word "Nazareth" with the Essene sect, a sect of Judaism with whom Jesus' teachings and ministry had little in common. e.g. the Essenses were big on purity and segregation, whereas Jesus preached and traveled publically and ate with tax collectors and sinners.

a Nazarene can mean one fully consecrated unto God, that is true. for example, Samson in the Old Testament was a Nazarene, but a Nazarene was to adhere to certain very strict rules, and one of them was to consume to wine, and not even grapes. yet the Gospels record Jesus drinking wine on several occasions. Romans and Greeks may not have known the culture very well, but the Jews who wrote three of the four Gospels certainly would have.

Preparing for having a child, Samson's mother was instructed not to drink wine and any product from grapes, any thing fermented. All chosen women were to be followed restricted diet and so on. In south-west part of india, state of Kerala, there are Nasraani's very old tradition. I am one of them my Ancestors where Nasraanis (Nasraani Mapla). Jesus fed others does not mean he drunk.. Jesus did not have any restriction. Bread and Wine were part of every day meals. Stay with your Bible studies and be happy. Our tradition go back to St. Thomas (Mar Thoma). I studied the early christians and eastern church Tradition. Faith with out "understanding" is blind. Skeptics can also be blind. To seek truth one does not need to be in a religios community. If one have an open mind and sincerely seeking truth, will find the truth.
