What a shame there seems to be no manager around today who can go on TV and produce such brilliant analysis and express it so clearly and wittily - I love the aside about Bob Wilson having been a teacher! He and Peter Taylor are sadly missed. Thank you for posting this wonderful clip.
@legendrydirk Cloughie did all that in 4 seasons... It took Alex Ferguson a lot longer than that to win his first European Cup and he did it with a lot of financial backing. Cloughie - the George Orwell of football if this interview is anything to go by. It's a shame that the BBC didn't take heed of Brian's comments with regards to 'Trial by Television' and criticism of referees' decisions - it would appear that ALL sports channels, not just the BBC, constantly take such decisions apart, as if they're judge and jury. In my opinion, being a professional football referee must be one of the most high-pressure jobs these days.
HE WAS COMPETELELY CRAZY CLOUGH BUT I HAVE READ A FEW TIM ES IF HIS CAREER WASN'T ENDED BY INJURY HE WOULD OF BEEN ONE OF THE GREATS APPARENTLY HE WAS THE BEST VOLLEYIER OF THE BALL AROUND AT THE TIME AND HE HAD A FANTASTIC GOAL SCOING RECORD AS A PLAYER WAY BETTER THAN NIGELS
Well I am a fan of Motty. This Motty is a legend ins't a myth at all. I know loads of fans who like Motty. It is because when you hear his voice, you know England are playing. It brings the passion out in you. He is a big name in commentary.
@smilerboyboy That's right. Motty is a very fine commentator, so he is - the fact that he has recently celebrated the 40th (!) anniversary of his debut as a Match of The Day commentator for the BBC is strong evidence of that. I believe that it was on 10th October 1971 that John's dulcet tones were first heard by MOTD viewers across the nation. Stewarty was at number one in the charts with "Maggie May" at the time ... and The Beatles had only recently gone their separate ways! A bygone era.
[Continuing on from my previous 'post' about Mr Brian Clough] in this manner is disrespectful, rude and patronising - in my considered opinion, at any rate.
Full marks to Cloughie for talking about Mr Francis in a respectful - if somewhat critical - manner.
It was noticeable that when Cloughie was talking to Mr Motson about Trevor Francis (who had recently joined Nottingham Forest from Birmingham City for a fee of £1,000,000) he was courteous enough to refer to Francis as a "man". These days, one often hears top class soccer managers patronise their players by referring to them (in interviews) as "boys" or "kids". It is all very well referring to young players of 17 or 18 as "kids" ..... but to belittle grown men of 24 or 25 by referring to them
@TheEctomorph I think it is not a case of "belittling" - I think it is more a case of manager seeing a lot of grown up players acting like spoilt children so it is natural to call them boys. Steve Bruce is always calling his players "boys" and he deserves a smack
@rutlandyid I don't think that 'Motty' particularly liked it when Cloughie referred to the fact that Mr Wilson was an ex-schoolmaster!
Mr Clough was - as we all know - a great football manager. Personally, I think that he was also a genuinely nice man - much nicer than his public image (created by the media) seemed to suggest. God rest his soul.
I'm not a forest fan myself, my mum is, my uncle is and my maths teacher at school is however I still think Brian Clough was the best manager who ever lived and his achievmentas are outstanding.
Love you Brian Got a 6th round Ticket to the FA cup when Roy Keane scored for Forest! 1-0 to Forest! Never forget seeng you! Jumped up llike a guardsman when you walked by! I miss you! You are class! Best manager England never had!
@ZarkavasLover G'day... Yairs, yairs, yairs, but who gives a Rat's Arse..? 2 teams of Latent- Homosexuals, squabbling for control & possession of a Symbolic Sperm-Packet, attemting to inseminate the Symbolic Vagina at each end of the field.,; getting lots of Body-Contact with Transient Big-Strong-Men, in the process. Platoon-Level Infantry Manouvres. Attack the Territorial enclave of the Neighbouring Tribe, whìle defending that of one's own Clan.
Old geezer. What would this idiot say about football today. I love old world people complaining about the world changing around them. To quote an old WISE man, "Your old road is rapidly agin, please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand, for the times they are a-changin."
@mckyle9 ... in your humble opinion. If everyone felt that way about Mr Motson, there is absolutely no way that he would have clocked up 40 consecutive years as a 'Match of The Day' commentator.
'Motty' made his debut as a MOTD commentator way back in the October of 1971 - exactly 40 years ago this month. At the time, Mr Edward Heath was Prime Minister ... Rod Stewart was at number one in the charts with "Maggie May" ... and many things which have become integral parts of modern society
@mckyle9 [Continuing on from my previous 'post' about John Motson] - such as mobile phones, the Internet, counselling and political correctness - did not exist. Long lost days, eh?! All credit to John Motson for his amazing longevity as one of the top TV football commentators in Britain. 'Motty's' personality and style of broadcasting may not be to everyone's taste, but he is very fine commentator whose knowledge of the 'beautiful game' is considerable (to say the very least).
you my friend are deluded. I've never spoken to a single football fan who likes john motsons commentary. This whole "motty is a legend" thing is a myth made up by the bbc.
Hes boring, annoying and his English bias is second to none.
@mckyle9 May I just ask, not being british, just what is so bad about Motson's commentary compared to others? I don't get a lot of football on TV, so I don't have a lot to judge by.
I am scottish mate, I made this account years ago don't know why I put bolivia as the country lol.
Its honestly everything mate. His voice, his commentary, his unbelivable bias; but probably most of all the way the BBC go on as if he's some kind of god. Plus they made some huge deal about him retiring 3 years ago and he's still on match of the day every saturday!!!
@WiseIsWise I honestly think motson (and to extent the english media in general) is the reason why scottish people always want england to lose. Personally i like all the players (except terry and cole of course) and usually am secretly rooting for them, but its hard when these idiots mention 1966 n how they invented football about 30 times in ur average friendly against andorra!!!
I'm indifferent towards Motty. As for the media thing, not a single English football fan I know likes them, whilst it's hard not to blame them at least partially for our failings on the international stage (as well as the added pressure for the players of being told they'll definitely win Tournament 'A' through a combination of shit football and simply being English, it provides the perfect ammo for foreign managers, players, media platforms, etc to shoot us down).
@berbatovinho77 Well for a start im scottish. And english people are clearly much better at americans than football hence why your looking at english football videos. I'm sorry if your better at basketball/ baseball/ american football - but no1 else in the world cares about any of those sports.
You are very stupid, we invented america like everywhere else. Also, here you are typing to us in OUR language rofl....! No need to say thanks fatty, you sound mexican/hispanic also because you can't type properly. You are definitely some kind of mutt from all over.
Oh Brian, you were brilliant - he saw the way football was coming under the microscope, god knows what he would think of it now. So glad he was in his majesterial best during my teens, the FA should forever hold their heads in shame that they never game him a shot at the England job. We would certainly have won another World Cup under his guidence.
Too much football on television? Back then the only live matches were the FA Cup/European Cup Finals and the odd England International! He's absolutely right about the rest of it though and its got steadily worse. Ever since Fever Pitch came out and the middle classes started taking an interest the media treatment of football as some sort of pseudo science rather than a simple ball game has just got intolerable. Its that attitude that explains why mediocre players can earn 30 grand a week..
Go Brian. still missed by a city fan . This man had great insight into how footballers should play footie. I know how he wanted to win better with Leeds. The dirty bunch of sods. Brian would have won silver if given the England job. We have never recovered from the FAs shit bag decision to give the England job to revie. Back to back European cups. The man was a winner. And his son played for us as well. He is having motty all over here.
I agree, the pundits over-analyse referees decisions down to the most minute details where it makes it pointless because as Clough rightly said the referee only has a few seconds with heaps of pressure from the fans and players to make a decision, not minutes slowed down with multi angled cameras like in the studio. I do, however, like when they break down games and talk about the tactical side of football and what went wrong for a certain team etc.
All i can remember about football in the late 70's is Nottingham Forest and mid week sports special at The City Ground and must of all Brian Clough winning near enough everything.
big headed big ego but that was cloughy the best with a record to back his gob up ..the manager we should have had in the 7os all the crap ive seen in god naas how many years if cloughy had been here nee way would i witness religations year in year out ... this interveiw cock on truth that has never been said since about mod ... best ever just like george best both miles ahead of anything anywhere anytime ..
Brian Clough = Legend. I think hes spot on here, compare this man to Alex Ferguson, hes actually defending refs and he won that European Cup 2 seasons on the trot when it was harder to win as it was THE champions only who entered it! Fergie still hasnt managed that in all his years in charge at lets be honest a far richer n far more popular club.
Cloughie spoke his mind n i respect that so much - truely he didnt give a fuck for no man :D
yeah clough is a legend... but even clough the man insists in this interview the most important thing to him is winning the league- and ferguson has done that far more than any other manager. He has won the champions league twice, and been in 3 european finals in the last 4 years, winning 1...not to mention winning the cup winners cup with united, AND aberdeen, all the fa cups, winning the scottish league etc
This all comes down to our individual perceptions of superstars. To my mind Sir you have mentioned alot of v good & competent players but other than Shilton (who as a player was the ultimate pro and didn't require managing) you still haven't mentioned superstars like the keegan, best, law, osgood, Lee, Tommy Smith, Hudson, in other words the big household names.
having Cloughie treating you like an idiot wouldn't work with the big egos.
@HoosierMF That guy who calls himself "Mr Ponko" is an intensely annoying, vile toe-rag; a thoroughly unpleasant, obnoxious and repulsive human being.
In my considered opinion, he deserves a good kickin' for the outrageously offensive comments that he posted on this You Tube board about the late, great Brian Clough. God rest Mr Clough's soul.
@MrPonko "He'd [sic] rude, vile, nasty and just a dirty tosser." Well, coming from an odious, foul-mouthed b*****d like you, that is like the pot calling the kettle black.
The late, great Brian Clough was renowned as a direct, straight talking man who liked to speak his mind. At times, he could come across as somewhat blunt and churlish. Nevertheless, he was a genuinely decent and honourable man, and compared with a repulsive toe-rag like you, he was a saint. God rest his soul.
@STPROT To be frankly honest with you, that remark is in very bad taste. Mr Clough's personality/character may not have been to your liking, but that doesn't mean that you are justified in making such appallingly offensive and disrespectful remarks about him. Shame on you.
[Continuing on from my previous post about Mr Clough]: He was not renowned for his humility ...... but one has to take into consideration the fact that 'Cloughie' was blessed with far, far more talent than 99% of human beings on God's Earth. He really was exceptionally talented - both as a football player and as a manager.
A famous saying - attributed to Muhammad Ali - springs to mind: "It's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am".
At that point in the interview when Mr Clough said (and I quote): "I am far more qualified than you or any of your colleagues", Mr Motson could - and perhaps should - have responded by pointing out that both Jimmy Hill and Bob Wilson were professional footballers of a pretty high standard, in their younger days.
I dare say, however, that Cloughie (G.R.H.S.) would have had an effective retort to this point.
The term "lad" is a very overused word in this society (no disrespect to the late, great Brian Clough).
Another word that is very overused is "kid" (no disrespect to the slighly less great - but still distinguished - Alan Hansen) !
Both of those colloquial words (which are often used very loosely and, IMHO, rather inappropriately) have a somewhat patronising, condescending ring to them.
@comeonthen97 [Continuing on from my previous comment about Norwich City F.C.]: I, for one, wish that The Canaries had had a manager of the calibre of Mr Clough during the 1970's! Having said that, I have nothing against Mr Ron Saunders or Mr John Bond. Both of those gentlemen were decent football managers in their day - and both of them brought some success - relatively speaking - to Norwich City Football Club.
Mr Clough (G.R.H.S.) was, by his own admission, not an academic man ...... but I think that he could have been, if he had wanted to be. He certainly didn't have a low I.Q. - his performance in that interview with Mr Motson serves as ample evidence of that.
i still respect john motson massively for his die hard passion for football, and i cant blame him for just asking these questions. clough wasnt mad at motson, he was mad at the BBC and probs jimmy hill seeing as though he nevers shuts up. if only motson interviews alex ferguson, that would be brutal
so what the fans go in the pubs! we dont need to hear pundits make a big deal.. just get to the goals, and stop slating referees, their job is hard enough already
lmaooo god bless clough for being so honest about the million pound man, lets be honest your price tag doesnt guarantee a starting place. torres would have been on the bench under clough, he best improve his form the amount he gets paid
the BBC always preach towards posh accents and great manners but yet they dont have those qualities, and they just deny all wrong doing. fucking hypocrites who only care about money
@AshtonArcher Yes, that's right; the beginning of the 1979/80 campaign ... all of thirty-two years ago now ! Mrs Margaret Thatcher was in the early days of her 'reign', as it were, at #10 Downing Street ... and Cliff Richard was at #1 in the charts with "We Don't Talk Anymore".
Back in those days - the tail end of the 70's - Kenny Dalgish and Trevor Francis were generally considered to be the best players in The Premiership (or 'Football League Division One', as it was then called).
Destroyed? Clough was a pillock who liked the sound of his own voice.

Well I am a fan of Motty. This Motty is a legend ins't a myth at all. I know loads of fans who like Motty. It is because when you hear his voice, you know England are playing. It brings the passion out in you. He is a big name in commentary.
smilerboyboy 3 months ago

TheEctomorph 3 months ago
It was noticeable that when Cloughie was talking to Mr Motson about Trevor Francis (who had recently joined Nottingham Forest from Birmingham City for a fee of £1,000,000) he was courteous enough to refer to Francis as a "man". These days, one often hears top class soccer managers patronise their players by referring to them (in interviews) as "boys" or "kids". It is all very well referring to young players of 17 or 18 as "kids" ..... but to belittle grown men of 24 or 25 by referring to them
TheEctomorph 3 months ago 8

God rest his soul.

mckyle9 3 months ago
@mckyle9 ... in your humble opinion. If everyone felt that way about Mr Motson, there is absolutely no way that he would have clocked up 40 consecutive years as a 'Match of The Day' commentator.
'Motty' made his debut as a MOTD commentator way back in the October of 1971 - exactly 40 years ago this month. At the time, Mr Edward Heath was Prime Minister ... Rod Stewart was at number one in the charts with "Maggie May" ... and many things which have become integral parts of modern society
TheEctomorph 3 months ago
@mckyle9 [Continuing on from my previous 'post' about John Motson] - such as mobile phones, the Internet, counselling and political correctness - did not exist. Long lost days, eh?! All credit to John Motson for his amazing longevity as one of the top TV football commentators in Britain. 'Motty's' personality and style of broadcasting may not be to everyone's taste, but he is very fine commentator whose knowledge of the 'beautiful game' is considerable (to say the very least).

Its honestly everything mate. His voice, his commentary, his unbelivable bias; but probably most of all the way the BBC go on as if he's some kind of god. Plus they made some huge deal about him retiring 3 years ago and he's still on match of the day every saturday!!!
mckyle9 3 months ago
@WiseIsWise I honestly think motson (and to extent the english media in general) is the reason why scottish people always want england to lose. Personally i like all the players (except terry and cole of course) and usually am secretly rooting for them, but its hard when these idiots mention 1966 n how they invented football about 30 times in ur average friendly against andorra!!!
mckyle9 3 months ago
@mckyle9

Veaseify 4 months ago
Go Brian. still missed by a city fan .
Big respect Brian. RIP
robiniohofc 4 months ago
I agree, the pundits over-analyse referees decisions down to the most minute details where it makes it pointless because as Clough rightly said the referee only has a few seconds with heaps of pressure from the fans and players to make a decision, not minutes slowed down with multi angled cameras like in the studio. I do, however, like when they break down games and talk about the tactical side of football and what went wrong for a certain team etc.

Brian Clough = Legend. Fergie still hasnt managed that in all his years in charge at lets be honest a far richer n far more popular club.

TheEctomorph 5 months ago
@MrPonko "He'd [sic] rude, vile, nasty and just a dirty tosser." Well, coming from an odious, foul-mouthed b*****d like you, that is like the pot calling the kettle black.
The late, great Brian Clough was renowned as a direct, straight talking man who liked to speak his mind. At times, he could come across as somewhat blunt and churlish. Nevertheless, he was a genuinely decent and honourable man, and compared with a repulsive toe-rag like you, he was a saint. God rest his soul.
TheEctomorph 5 months ago
@STPROT To be frankly honest with you, that remark is in very bad taste. Mr Clough's personality/character may not have been to your liking, but that doesn't mean that you are justified in making such appallingly offensive and disrespectful remarks about him. Shame on you.
TheEctomorph 5 months ago
[Continuing on from my previous post about Mr Clough]: He was not renowned for his humility ...... but one has to take into consideration the fact that 'Cloughie' was blessed with far, far more talent than 99% of human beings on God's Earth. He really was exceptionally talented - both as a football player and as a manager.
A famous saying - attributed to Muhammad Ali - springs to mind: "It's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am".
TheEctomorph 5 months ago
At that point in the interview when Mr Clough said (and I quote): "I am far more qualified than you or any of your colleagues", Mr Motson could - and perhaps should - have responded by pointing out that both Jimmy Hill and Bob Wilson were professional footballers of a pretty high standard, in their younger days.
I dare say, however, that Cloughie (G.R.H.S.) would have had an effective retort to this point.
TheEctomorph 5 months ago

TheEctomorph 5 months ago
Mr Clough (G.R.H.S.) was, by his own admission, not an academic man ...... but I think that he could have been, if he had wanted to be. He certainly didn't have a low I.Q. - his performance in that interview with Mr Motson serves as ample evidence of that.
