I bought mine 6 months ago as my commuter and I get an average of 57 mpg everyday. I love everything about this car. After seeing the mileage I get from this car, I'm selling my Borrego! I mean..57 mpg or 17 mpg...hmm....
why cant hybrid technology be applied on a (at least) decent looking car? i would buy one, i tried to convince myself that this white prius i was thinking to buy could look nice with black membranes and that with different bumpers this ugliness could smoothen up.
@twicon I don't think the Insight looks much better than the Prius. I'm not sure why they have such similar shapes to them. I'm also surprised that Toyota has not made another Hybrid model to choose from.
@Mitsy1212 there not better than the prius because the backseat room is too cramped and I wouldn't ever ride in this car unless I'm driving it or riding shotgun the backseat is too small with less legroom and head room, I hate this car. the Prius I fit ferfectly in the backseat
@twicon nope..it will always be ugly. Honda Civic and CR-Z hybrids are very attractive. As are Nissan Altima hybrids and the new Hyundai Sonata hybrids.
From the video: "The center of gravity is low, because the batter is low, behind the back seat"
Uhhh... hello? People have visions of banks and banks of big, heavy lead-acid car batteries in these things. Imagine 80 standard "C" batteries. Now imagine something about 20% lighter than that. That's what we're talking about here: about 80 "C" sized NiMH cells, yielding 100.8 volts at 5.75 AH. People then use that common misconception to sell the idea that hybrids aren't really green. Beware...
I agree with the funky EPA ratings. My Kia was rated at 25/30, and I've yet to get under 29, even with lots of warming up on cold, winter days. Typically 34-36 Hwy. You buys your car and you takes your chances, I guess.
What's the deal with the EPA ratings for Hondas? My parents 2007 Civic always gets 30+ mpg in the city and just under 40 on the highway. These revised ratings are crap.
Diesel is a filthy fuel. Diesel engines require a particulate filter, a catalytic converter and urea injection or a NOX trap to be as clean as even the most polluting gasoline engines. Natural gas vehicles are the best by far. The Civic GX for example.
Also there is nothing to support the idea that diesels are easier to maintain or more reliable. In fact there is quite a bit of information that says just the opposite.
My family have a had a few diesel cars (current one being a '00 Mazda 626 TD). It's extremely reliable, it's nearing 200,000 miles and it hasn't had anything major go wrong with it.
Old MErcedes W123 diesel's would go forever, some have poushed 1 million miles.
Well it really depends on what company builds it, early GM V8 diesels were extremely unreliable and the Ford (IH) Powerstroke diesels aren't much better. The Honda iCTD-i seems to be doing well. Burning diesel is still extremely dirty, the engines are more expensive, the fuel is more expensive and usually the maintenance is more expensive. They just aren't worth the trouble. Natural gas is the only way to go, most Americans would be able to fill up at home and it's the cleanest fuel out there.
i heard that American diesels are more expansive because diesel fuel in America has a lot more sulfur in it, so they have to design the engines to cope with it, dont know if that's true anymorer with all the new epa rules and whatnot.
You are greatly misinformed about diesels. They pollute just as much as a gasoline fueled vehicle, just in a different spectrum of pollutants.
Diesel vehicles are much easier to maintain than gasoline vehicles. I have a deisel with over 300K Km and have done nothing more than oil changes. I also have an Insight and am finding that the diesel gets equal if not better fuel economy only with the hassels of a gas vehicle.
My point was that it is much more expensive to build diesels that are as clean as current production gasoline engines, as a result most diesels are not nearly as clean gasoline engines. The only diesels that are common where I live (other than heavy vehicles) are full size trucks and they are very expensive to maintain compared to the gasoline engines in the same vehicles.
People, you have to remember that Hybrids are still Gas with the asst with Batteries. If you want to go totally Green you want to go with a Electric Car. Sad that GM thru away the EV1 cuz' that would have been on the top of the list. As for Diesel, if you modify the Diesel, you can get up to 70 MPG..... Do slash on Diesel until you educate yourself.
@JPRamon68 I predict that most Americans would prefer a hybrid vs. an all electric car. Hybrid technology has been around for awhile--totally electric cars are too new & offer no alternative to using electricity instead of gas as a means to make them run. I predict that the Volt will not be a huge success for GM & with the price tag they are asking, it is out of reach for the average working American.
The first ever hybrid was developed and built by Ferdinand Porsche when he was working for The Lohner Carriage Company called the Lohner-Porsche Mixte. The 2000 Honda Insight was the first gas/electric hybrid sold in the United States.
I still don't know why Toyota produces many boring styled Cars, unlike Honda. Full of Innovation. Like Toyota Prius 2004 is copying from 2000 Honda Insight model to minimize the turbulent cavity....... Honda OWNS Toyota!
Do you know the meaning of refine. How could you improve on a car when it is only in its first generation. Also the price of the car is most important when buying a hybrid. You said that magazine's have said it is the most disappointing cars but Motortrend or any other magazine have said it. The most disappointing car ever made was the Honda Odyssey. For a 20,000 hydrid, i will not be expecting top of the line interior.
I really like the rear and interior design, but, you cannot see it here, but I love how Honda completely copied Volvo's headrests, I mean it's pretty bad.
You are an idiot. Motortrend tested it better than a Toyota Prius. And how could you expect Honda to build a hybrid car and make it perform like an S2000. I do not see an Insight or Prius at the drag strip making their 45 sec quarter mile times. Also Honda was the first to make the Hybrid engine but Toyota waited till they perfected it and made it look like they invented it.
if it was a diesel it would be much higher fuel mileage, but i dont see a diesel in a small car anytime soon, even though the volkswagen TDI and it sounds like a truck, which is good lol, but confusing, that a car should have a car sound
Me too, I felt claustrophobic in this car. I could not give up my v8 Commander for one of these. I wish they incorporated some of this technology in bigger cars or at least give us a Diesel option.
Yes, I think you are right, but they have gotten hard to deal with. Since they are on top, they don't have to work at selling. I don't currently own a Honda (I owned 4 in the past), but they are my favorite. I think the Korean cars are cutting into their market share.
I heard that you would have to drive a Prius 400 thousand miles for the better gas mileage to offset the higher price over the Honda Insight. So, the lower mileage for the Insight isn't such a big deal since it costs so much less than the Prius.
I know, but he said one of the most fun hybrids to drive which kind of implies all hybrid vehicles. Also, Car and Driver did a comparison test where they praised the Fusion Hybrids dynamics. The Fusion Hybrid won that comparison test as well
I have a Prius and it has a cheap feel to it to some extent, because they have to keep the weight down. The hood and tailgate are aluminum. The steering wheel is like something for a computer game, etc., but it is a high tech vehicle and does what it is suppose to very well.
I did not mean a piece of crap heh, I was just stating this is the worst scoring car verses all the hybrids. As in it is to cheap for it's own good, I did not mean to offend anyone
At least there's no joke about it rather than the prius
