  • Hi um my teacher assigned us a project and it was to jazz up the song ode to joy and I have no idea how to and I'm gonna fail:(

  • @MsDomo99 Hey. I'm a student of Mr. Noe's. Man is he a great teacher. ( but busy ). Things to ask yourself. What is the Key signature? once you get that, find the sweet notes. If you're doing a total improvisation on the piece, really impress your teacher with good articulation. SLUR the upbeat, and TOUNGE the downbeat. ( doo da doo da doo da ). Really pronouncing the articulation into your horn makes it sound jazzier. Once you get the sweet notes, play around with different patterns! Good Luck!

  • great...

  • HOLY DAMN REVERB MUCH? lol. Thanks for the video, man.

  • 1:13 :O that was amazing i want to learn that

  • im new to playing the trumpet msg me some tips plz!!

  • Why did you give a different scale then you played? You gave us (F Ab Bb B C Eb F) then you played (G Bb C C# D F G). Although, from trying to figure this out I did figure out that blues scales follow (wh w h h wh w). It made it confusing because you gave us (1 b3 4 #4 5 b7 1) which I tried to apply to the scale you played.

  • i am new to jazz what does F 1 Ab b3 Bb 4 stuff mean

  • @H1N1PIPER Ok, so the F is just an F note and the Ab or Bb are A and B flats, etc. The first note of the scale (called the tonic) is labeled as 1. As you progress up the staff (lines on sheet music), each position is the next number. For example if the tonic is E then 1 corrisponds to E and 2 to F and 3 to G, etc. So, he was saying for that scale F is 1 then you skip 2 and play 3 (flat) then 4, 4 (sharp), 5, skip 6, 7 (flat). Writen like this (1 b3 4 #4 5 b7).

  • @H1N1PIPER b7 is the 7th position up the staff from the tonic and played flat. (b is flat and # is sharp) I hope this helps. See some blues scales in sheet music form for clarification.

If you understand whole (w) and half (h) steps, then it may make more sense to say that blues scales follow this pattern: (wh w h h wh w). The first step from the tonic is one and a half steps. The next note is a whole step, then the next is a half step, half step, one and half, and finally a whole step.

  • like the trumpet

  • very nice :)

  • Gr8 video Aaron TY very much.

  • Reminds me moanin' from Art Blakey and Jazz messengers. Right? :)

  • oh yeah cool that u got yourself a youtube channel too! i think you know who this is.... master the upright bass in a week ring any bells?........

  • hey its noe, i hope that the v show audition for the love of all things holy i did wasnt filmed, seriously...... its bad enough for me to do class room things but when i did v show tryouts your eyes were like shot gun barrels instead of pupils i mean seriously, good job though, hope to be back by january and god bless, and yes.... i still suck at reading sheet music god bless

  • u are awsome i wish i could play like that. i love jazz and i'm in jazz band but i don't no how to do improvs. u are a great teacher by the way

  • hI Mr Noe, i was just wondering...see the music youve got playing in the background.... whats the chances in you putting a video of that up??? love your video , very useful info..ive learned alot from this one video...thanks.

  • im a senior in my high school jazz band and i love doing improv solos. it seems, however, like i cant figure out a good strategy for attacking diminished chords. someone once told me to use the whole note scale...is that accurate?

    great video btw very informative

  • You can always stick to the chord tones. for scalar passages try the whole-half diminished scale. Given the note you start on, you alternate whole steps & 1/2 steps. Here it is starting on C:

    C D Eb F Gb Ab A B C

  • @noetrumpet Man, I been trying to play trumpet for years... I was always frustrated that I couldn't play like you on this vid. Many folks have mentored me but I'm afraid they went at it wrong because This video puts all the pieces together for me. I hear and understand everything you did here. Your vid(s) will take me to the next level of playing. Thanks so much!!!!!

  • @jameslondon22 I like to think of the whole-half dim scale in groups, C D Eb - Eb F Gb - Gb Ab A - A B C. If you already know all your minors its very easy to figure out the whole-half dim scales by thinking 123 in Cm, 123 in Ebm, 123 in Gbm, 123 in Am. Sounds complicated but for me its easier to think this way than alternating half and whole steps. Of course once you learn it, you don't want to have any crutches.

  • @womb0womb0 thanks thats been really helpful, i never thought to look at it that way but its muchh easier for me

  • well idk know excatly what u mean but when starting improv you just dont learn it over night you want to start off with slow simple solos then gradually work up, but to do what he does it takes years of hardwork. a pretty good book to check out is jazz anyone message him for other books or better advice also check out play along cds but talk to your jazz teacher and definently check out the jazz anyone book

  • so what you telling me is that i can play any note in that key and it wont sound awkward??? i would appreciate a response

  • sweet notes work great when you emphasize them. These are what the rhythm section often choose for chords. Experiment with the mixolydian for getting from sweet note to sweet note. Later, use chromatic notes to add color and tension.

Go to my website and get the accomp track. Bert Ligon (Univ. of SC) has a saying he calls the Cool Rule. "If it sounds cool, it must be right!"

Chris8496 also has a great point. Find a good teacher to help. My video is a starting place to pique interest.

  • If you listened to what he said in the video you wouldnt be asking that question

  • That a great way to explain it. I never thout of it that way.

  • That is a/That's a*** Never thought***

  • You think you could get sheet music of the last part? Itd be amazing help

  • great teacher/ communicator! 5***** :)

  • YOUR MY TEACHER!!!! (:

I have you for Music Apprec.

You should play for us :D

  • ジャズトランペット最高!

  • holy crap genius im beginner in trumpet so i might know these notes but its still great blues

  • Mouth piece size???

  • i love how i've always felt like my licks sound lame but you use some of the same licks as me!

  • Wow... I don't know how to respond to that one...

  • OLOLOLOOLLLL

  • what i mean is, i just don't use them right :P

  • @noetrumpet is he reffering to the way you set your embouchure

  • @noetrumpet whats a lick?

  • @dundy96 it's what you do to your trumpet when you REALLY like your trumpet. Just make sure you wipe it off afterwards.

  • @ProKzaine well your lick's did'nt sound lame than ;-)

  • @ProKzaine hmm that wasnt rude at all

  • @ProKzaine thats because if you use only the pentatonic notes it always sounds "too pretty".. and, as it is easy, everybody does it in any instrument. but it works anyway, so there no reason not to use only pentatonic scale if you dont know what else to do

  • good job you make me wanna pick up my trumpet again good times all about havin fun and makin jams =)

  • Nice playing and a useful lesson. I want to get beyond just playing a blues scale over chords. Although it is relatively easy to pretend you know what you're doing with a blues scale.

  • yoh man i like it

  • what kind of trumpet is that?

  • Martin Committee. Black lacquer.

  • Excellent!! This video is very helpful!! Thank you for making it!

I'm with the Cedar Park High School Band (Cedar Park, Texas) and I'm taking a liking to learning how to play jazz. My friend, a trombonest, really inspired me to play jazz when I saw how amazing he was!! I've always loved listening to all the great trumpet players but I never made an attempt to learn any. Thanks to him I want to learn jazz and thanks to you I have a guide to improving jazz! : )

  • tldnr

  • Thanks for a great lesson - a lot of information in a short period of time and presented so well it is easy to understand.

I have only one question: When you change chords, do you aim for a 3rd or a 7th as the first note of the measure, that is, do you identify the chord (maj., min., dom. 7th) as soon as the chord changes?

  • tlndr

  • Thanks for the info! I wish you'd take off all of that reverb tho!

  • that was really helpful thanks, im 15 and i like playing this style. you sound great thankyou :) and i like ur trumpet, looks cool

  • I played the correct notes on my trumpet, but my trumpet is in a different key.

  • thnak you man!!!!!!!!!!!love ur videos.

    Mike

  • why wont my trumpet play an open note i have to press the third valve to get any kind of noise

  • one or more of your valves are in backwards or are in the wrong place. Most trumpet models have the Valve numbers stamped on them. Put them in order (1,2,3) with one closest to the mouthpiece. With most models, the stamped number should be facing the mouthpiece.

    Hope this helps!

    -Noe

  • oh man your a genius. thanks a ton. great playing aswell.

  • Have you turned the valves around?? When you wash/ oil your trumpet, you have to turn the valves till they click in..

  • what trumpet is that?

  • Martin Committee. Black Laquer with engraving.

  • thats awesome dude!!! :)

  • Thx !

  • Horn has a great sound on it's own.

  • thanx for the lesson, very useful

  • I think the trumpet looks like a Martin Committee.

  • good stuff...digging the black trumpet...great point on playing through chord changes with the chord tones, I remember attending a concert with Roy Hargrove and he was doing the same exact thing to warm up.

  • by the way thanx

  • glad you found it useful.

  • this is just what I needed I whanted to learn how to play that blues scale because I play blues on the guitar al the time and I just wanted to play on the trumpet so much now that I am learning it.

  • Hí Noe

    Great lessen, for all!

    Thank´s

    JDB

  • Thank you very much for your fast answer!

I have all the arbersod cds, but sometimes it turns a bit monotone (sorry I speak spanish...) and you can´t transpose the tunes... but the one in the video sounds more like a real band, it´s much better than band in a box. I will try it!!! thanks!!

  • wich play along are you using there? i want to get one better than the band in a box... it´s very bad...

  • Actually the one in the video is BIAB also. It's a great practice tool. If you're looking for a recorded rhythm section, you should try the Aebersold series. Volume 54 "Maiden Voyage" is a great one to start with. I use it with my High School kids as well as some of my college students just starting out with improv. It's a great resource. Hope this helps...
