Sorry if someone mentioned this already, but apparently Alan hadn't even see the screenplay and had no idea what the movie was about when he wrote the ten songs (really only nine as the 10th is just a re-working of the first). Lindsay Anderson just asked him to write some songs and in the weirdest twist of fate ever, they just fitted with the movie brilliantly,
When I first heard this amazing tune, I thought the singer was Eric Burdon. Now I find out that it's Alan Price, the keyboard player from the same band as Burdon! Weird, huh?
a classic example of late 60s 70s art. Great directors collaborating with great musicians. Just like Harold and Maude- Ashby and Cat Stevens, or The Graduate - Mike Nichols and Simon and Garfunkel
Long before VCRs, there were many more theatres, and some were what were called "repertory" theatres that charged 50 cents, changed what they showed every few days but films would often come back--they'd print a playbill of what they were showing for six weeks or so. I'd go to the Strand Theatre in Ocean Beach (San Diego) for every single showing of this movie (usually a double feature with Malcolm MacDowell's other film of the era, "If.") I had to have seen it 30 times. Finally found it on DVD.
This movie and "The Ruling Class" by Peter Barnes and starring Peter O'Toole are my all time favorite flicks. I'm thinking that may be why I have a hard time getting folks to go to the movies with me.
OLM is not a sequel. It was part of a triology Lindsay Anderson directed over the years using the same character.
Anderson is best remembered for his "Mick Travis" trilogy of feature films, all of which star Malcolm McDowell as Travis: If...., O Lucky Man! and Britannia Hospital.
cookcalchel is correct. Malcolm McDowell as "Mick Travis" is a recurring element in all three films. There are some sly allusions to the previous movies in OLM! and BH, but it's understood that he's not playing the same guy, even though in each film, the guy is named "Mick Travis."
If... and O Lucky Man! are awesome.
Britannia Hospital? Not so much. Malcolm/"Mick" is pretty much a peripheral character, or an extended "cameo," as it were.
In the DVD with Malcolm McDowell and Alan Price doing the commentary, Price said the bottle on top of the organ was home brew from Newcastle. The director Lindsay Anderson got it for the shooting and Price obliged him by drinking it. He said he was stewed during all of the songs in O' Lucky Man.
I have seen parts of it. Not my favorite though. Have you seen the movie If..., that is one of my all time Malcolm McDowell faves. That and A Clockwork Orange.
It sure was a great peformance. I own the DVD and watch it a couple of times a year...(I was joking about Blue Thunder...that was Roy Scheider's film all the way...)

That's too freaky that bit with the Sheepman. That is in this movie right? That horrible half man half sheep guy under the blanket? Kramer's Pigman was pretty funny. That's maybe what made me look for this movie. I only watched Pigman episode last week.
Thanks for posting. I had almost totally forgotten about this strange, but brilliant movie. Still, it's one of those movies where the soundtrack perfectly fits, if not eclipses, the movie. I like Poor People as well.
This film had a massive effect on me when I saw it in my teens. I never got it out of my mind for weeks. I never forgot the pigman. Who would think it would almost come true? Brilliant song too.
Me too! I've been looking for it for decades! I like all the songs in the film. Also like the film. Like the irony. Like the reality. Fantastic film. Will never forget it.
i've been listening to the soundtrack all week in the car. The video is beautiful, tired looking, smoky rooms and a simple song. 1970s - is there anything you can't amaze us with!
love the movie and the soundtrack is even better the album was very hard to get after 1990 it was briefly released on cd by a german label then deleted ..go figure..I managed to pick up the original album for $8 aus thank god oh and what happened between him and the Animals well he was basically a total arsehole and the rest especialy Burdon couldnt stand him great album though
Ever had an older friend with slightly different taste who turns you onto something you'd never find yourself? My friend Charlie wanted me to go with him to see "O Lucky Man" in the early 1980s...Smart guy that Charlie...

This film has become even more relevant today in this age of 9/11 con jobs and cctv big brother surveillance systems, and FOX news LIARS all over the place pushing for the removal of the Bill of Rights. Don't fall for the con job. Wake up, this film should help you wake up. see it now.
Fantastic epic brillaint movie and I can say the same about the sountrack. Juast sheer genius pairing. i treasure my vhs and my cd. The epitome of the 70s and still relevant today
If it were possible for me to think Amanda even cooler than I already did, her citing O LUCKY MAN would have done it. Is BRITTANIA HOSPITAL any good? That's the conclusion of the trilogy, right?
It really is extremely good, and if it will only come out on DVD so I can see it again, I will probably end up rating it one of my top two or three. The main reason it doesn't have Pride of Place right now is that's been too damn long since I've seen it. I also agree with the critic who said it was the best use of a rock soundtrack on a film ever.

It is a crime of the century that Alan Price
was not even nominated in 1973. Instead Oscar
went to Marvin Hamlisch for "The Way We Were".
Anybody remembers that movie? At all? And he
got another one for stealing the soundtrack
to "Sting" from Scott Joplin. What a joke.
woland99 4 years ago
I for one NEVER overlooked this soundtrack. I've got it on vinyl when it first came out last century. Still sounds great.
