James Mason's finest hour, in my opinion. When he died, the film reviewer Vincent Canby, in an obituary, called him the "Almost Man", because he was never 'quite' a superstar, and not strictly a character actor either. Actually, his performance skills were so good that I was always glad to see him in ANY role!!
cheers mate for the reply , i was refering to the whole country and not just engerland as it is called down there , my late grandfather watched his friends get splattered all over the desert and normandy fighting for king and country , as a united country who in history has beaten us ? if you are refering to a particular game , war and sport are so different , when was the last death on a football field ?
the crimes of the third reich are well documented , was hitler a madman , well that is a matter of personal belief , regardless of how smart the turn out for battle the uk is still two nil up against germany
A mistake in dates the Commando Raid to eliminate Erwin Rommel was not a Month before Pearl Harbor but November 17 & 18 1941 the British High Command wanted this done before the start of Operation Crusader.
all you morons who say hitler done this and done that mistakes, his the damn one who made the army, he took them out and made them so powerful, he also designed there loverly uniforms.
and he never murded his niece, were you morons there to see him do it, or are you asking the victors to lie to you.
the fuhrer started it all anyway, there would be no desert fox without him.
@humblebublegg Now Now, Be Nice! & Im an englishman thats had family that took a kicking from them but can still have a respect for a good army & (Rom) as a grat commander like Ike or monty.
@humblebublegg Nope hans goderian made the blitzkrieg not hiltler......hitler let the entire british expenditonary force escape because he was mad that hes generals had done so well.....yes he fucked germany everyone nos it.....and yes your right he did not kill his niece....he just fucked her brains out and locked her up in a apartment for a couple of years....she went crazy and killed herself so i pretty sure that ones on him too...
@wierdalien1 which one hitler fucking germany...or hitler fucking his niece......well thats not proven....but he locked her up in his apartment for years......he seemed to be in love with her.......he cried like a baby when he relised that she didnt leave him a sucide note..........Rommel americans love you.........sorry had to give a shot out to rommel....
Aesthetically speaking the German military were beautiful to look at especially their equipment...and of course the best military in WWII. Pity that the nation and the German military should have had such a neanderthal of a leader in Hitler (killed his niece and girlfi).competent senior German officers should have suspected something was up immediately when Hess went on a civilian plane to the UK to negotiate for peace, and Hitler allowed 340,000 Allied troops to escape to England from Dunkirk.
just imagine if this first raid had been in color: virtually everything in it would have been wasted, every last pictorial value There is something to be said for a return
@doctornoooo I so agree with you on that. The B/W has that something extra that would have been lost in colour. Its like I think Alf Hitchcock's the Birds may have looked more sinister in B/W.
the odd thing about Mason, how fine an actor he was, here his english accent is pure brit but in the desert rats he turns it inside out into very gutteral heavy germanic, and the thing is he is utterly believable as both Rommels. The only bad performance I ever saw from him was in some hotel thing hotel imperioso or something, there he just was barely there, long before odd man out. Always enjoyable this guy, veddy veddy grand.
notice who said are you serious one of his first roles and what an intro the only flaw I could spot in this great great opening: it should have been completely silent, just the title somewhere off the coat of n africa, the boat coming in, rushing the villa and then bang coming down on that line as the first piece of talk but Hathaway was very very very good here one of the best openings of any war film ever and anybody recognize the voice of the narrator??
@doctornoooo: Damn! I recognised the narrators voice but just couldn't put a face to it. I spent ages trying to think of every 1950's film character I could but it beat me. I went and looked on IMBDb in the end: Michael Rennie ...Klaatu in The Day the Earth stood still.
This is a "smiling" video. =p
