First time I see material from Alex Higgins, I was actually searching for a match of the young Jimmy White. Totally amazed to see Higgins smoking during a WC-Semifinal. I didn't even know they were allowed to, then.
@GlennGould77 - I went to the crucible in the mid 80's and Embassy were the sponsors. Just about everything to do with the tournament was smoking related ie sponsor freebies etc. I imagine Higgins was probably paid to smoke on TV by Embassy lol. Tobacco sponsorship of sport now seems to be banned in the main.

The crazy thing is Higgins should have won in 1980 when he played his best snooker in any Championship, and White in 82. White would have dominated if he had won then.
Alex was the biz, but at least he goes to his grave with 2 world titles. The standard in 72 was rubbish and White should've beaten him here. Jimmy White is the unluckiest man alive and will go out with nothing to show for his talent. In a parallel universe somewhere Jimmy was world champion in 1982 and went on to beat Davis and Hendry to a few more titles.
White missed what was virtually match ball with the rest to let Higgins in to make his legendary 69 break. He would otherwise have won 16-14. White also missed frame ball red with the rest in the 1992 final to otherwise lead 15-9, he lost the match to Hendryy 18-14. White lacked the concentration and showed too much carelessness to become a regular tournament winner. Such a shame as he was a great talent.
Yesterday at grimsby auditorium it was alex higgins vs jimmy white jimmy hit 147 on the 4th frame then 146 on the 5th frame alex looked really old im trying to find video's on youtube i was there :D
i love to watch both of these two outstanding players, they made snooker fun to watch so thanks to them both. And i really hope Jimmy knocks out mark king in the first match for this upcoming masters january 2010
i don't think there's any player better at potting than alex higgins. any of these shots could have been made by many players, but one after another... incredible
Dont think Jimmy ever recovered after that match, but he was strong favourite in 1992, not sure if it was 92 but he was
14-8 up against Hendry, White for some reason couldnt hit a ball right in the last session, hendry didnt play that well either and remember feeling gutted after hendry beat him, when you watch that last session against hendry, it dosent appear as though white is really trying, some say he backed hendry, hard to beleive, but may never know for sure
spot on. Jimmy would have gone onto be world champion if he had won this match. He never recovered. Alas for him along came Hendry and the rest so to speak is History
two greatest players, Alex Higgins has a gift, Alex probably had the worst stance in the game, but he could do things on the table which most players can only dream of.
take a look in a shot 1:48, the red doesn't go right, so hi kick the cue ball with a litle massé, so hard to do,
Spot on m8. The thing folk dont realise about higgins is that EVERYTHING about his game was wrong ( stance. Too quick. Too jerky. Too highly strung etc etc ) yet he won TWO WC 72, 82. The man was an enigma. Davis said higgins had the greatest snooker brain he ever played against. Davis was right too.
has anyone read "the hurricane" it was a biography written by bill borrows. it makes the frame much more interesting if you've read it. LONG LIVE WHIRLWIND WHITE and HURRICANE HIGGINS!!!
Is John Spencer one of the commentators, here?

I always feel pity for Jimmy. He deserves one championship :( I just feel that he tended to rush the important shots too much sometimes

Higgins was a great side-pocket potter. Much like the American Steve Mizerak.

ThePtno1 1 year ago
@ThePtno1 I know, I know. However... it would be tought for him now. Snooker, like darts seems easy.
But it fucking isn't. It is HOT as a Sun down there. Hot, sweaty crotch while you play a two-cushion blue. Hard tack.
All sport in this 21st Century has became like Highland Toffee. Too much cash, too much voices on the shoulder.
