I think she bought way to much stuff u don't really need a sand scooper cause u can put your hermit crabs in a cup and dump out the sand in a garbage bag and put them back in their cage easy a's that.
Sponges are just bacteria breeding grounds, hermit crabs need water that covers half their shell in a dish that they can easily climb in and out of. Finally, hermit crabs need MOIST, natural sand to burrow in, not that freaky bone-dry stuff she has...
I know, this lady isn't right about all things, and I wouldn't go straight to her for hermit crab adivce, but she does give some great toy ideas, and she tells you the correct way to clean a cage though. But she obviously isn't a hermit crab expert.
when she set down the food and water dish thing it sounded like it was that plasticy papery material that is VERY cheap! and also she should use a glass tank not a plastic and it should be atleast 10 gallons or more!!
I have a 57 gallon tank with wood chips,4 hermit crabs ,thermometer, hydrometer, heating source, salt water dish ,fresh water dish, flakes, and a fake log. Is there anything i need more!
@Arifesufali No woodchips! It can really hurt them! Use Eco Earth (coconut fiber), sand, or both! But don't use colored sand or gravel like she showed in this video! Poor hermies. :(
@Arifesufali I don't think wood chips are a good idea. Certain wood is bad for them, and they need a substrate that they can borrow in such as play sand. Give them more climbing stuff like fake plants, choya wood and hiding places such as half coconut shells.
My hermit crab won't eat or drink. He is alive but I don't know what to do. If you go to my video "hermit crab help" you will see what his tank is like. PLEASE HELP ME! I am really worried for his sake. I don't want him to die I am desperate for help. Please):
Plastic containers fail, bowls are too shallow, sponges are bacteria agents, gravel scratches hermit crabs and kills the fresh molters, hermit crab sand is bullshit and it is messy, smells, and is all around a bad sand for the hermits, the "hermit water" you got is also shit. Get some instant oceanic water and some Distilled Water from Wal-Mart. find 1/2 or 3/4 inch deep bowls. Don't forget rocks/stuff for smll hermits to crawl out of.
i realy dont know why people would want a hermit crab there so boring ,if i was a perant i would just but fish there much more fun and not as hard to look after
@MrGman0909 not really the fish just swim around. hermit crabs can crawl outside of there tank and it makes a good hide and seek game for your child too.
In nature, hermit crabs live in groups of up to 100- it is very important for the crab to have friends. Also do NOT GIVE YOUR CRAB HERMIT CRAB FOOD!! This is very important because it contains toxins that were banned in cat and dog food but is still processed in hermit crab food and it can kill them. If the toxins don't kill them, they will starve to death. They need fresh organic food or they will be deprived and start dieting or stop eating all together- misting is good tho, keep that up :)
well right now i have only one hermit crab in like a one gallon plastice tank but im soon gonna get him into a glass tank and i just got it a couple days ago and i dont really know allot of stuff about hermit crabs so i need help pm for some ideas oh and i have one painted shell that my hermit crab is in and one not painted shell. thx!
sponges hold bacteria that KILL hermit crabs they should NEVER be used in the water dishes plus hermit crabs need to be able to get water in there shells for lubrication so sponges in my mind and in experts minds equal DEATH
why is everyone being so mean ? my hermit crab has a plastic tank...it's not like i'm gonna spend 400 dollars or more, on a glass tank for 1 teeny hermit crab. for once, expertvillage doesn't suck...i think i'd go out and buy a few things from here for my little hermit crab :D.
i actually heard its bad to give your hermit crab a bath everyday, like you should only do it once every few months and it can be very traumatizing for them. i barely ever give mine a bath and they're ok. and i like to give my crabs lots of different food, some of they're favorits are crushed almonds, popcorn and itty bitty vanilla crab cookies i bought at the store, they eat those up like crazy :]
@quinnbeeloved I prefer neither. It's best to feed your hermit crab fresh fruits, veggies, and unseasoned meats, seafood, and nuts along with a source of calcium and other essential minerals. The store pellet and powder food often contains really nasty preservatives and added sugars and salts which aren't good for hermit crabs. You can also go out and harvest a lot of food for your hemies in your back yard like maple leaves, grasses, and dandelion leaves. If you want a full list, mail me! :)
I don’t understand why she is talking about waking them up in the morning (in the other video she did it too)………… Aren’t they supposed to be nocturnal though..?
@Jetx48 The only crabs she works with in her videos are purple pinchers or "Coenobita clypeatus" which are nocturnal. They may be up during the day every once in a while, but the majority of their activities take place under the cover of darkness.
@Jetx48 Yes, you're right. :) But we are posting on video series that uses purple pinchers, so for the sake of the person I responded to (Salvia4242), the crabs that Debbie uses in her videos are indeed nocturnal. P.S. I watched your hermie video. He's cute!
@Roxieroserosietoes The "aquarium" is not big enough and is plastic, they need fresh AND salt water dishes that are deep enough for the crabs to submerge in, not enough substrate to molt in unless the crabs are super tiny, shows food that is packed with nasty preservatives that will poison the crabs, she does not say anything about guages to measure temp and humidity, does not show that you need any heating element (which is very important), sponges harbor bacteria, paint shells chip. Torture.
@farfinmosker c'mon dont give this lady heaps its an alright setup the onlybad thing its not a glass tank she is just trying to help people out. if you think she knows nothing how about you make a toturiol to look after them
@b0nEsp100 There are actually numerous things wrong with her setup. I listed them in a reply to somebody below. I can't make a video, but I wrote up a very detailed care sheet if you or anybody else is interested. Just send me a message, and I will be happy to send it to you or link you to it. Crabs need a lot more than this lady is showing people. Her heart may be in the right place, but it's not enough for the crabs. I am just trying to help as well. :)
@farfinmosker hey person!!!! she peobally dont have alot of money for a 10-20 gallon tank ever think 20 gallon tank cost about $80 so hush!!!! and btw she is a school teach she is doing good so dont make fun of or judge.
@theskyline100 Yeah, usually a Kritter Keeper like that is a bad thing. Glass aquariums keep heat in better, and they don't have that vented lid which makes the tank too dry.
I like her i enjoy watching her videos. everything works!! But i only give my crabs a bath every once a week. I gave them sand in their cage, and they love it!! they keep diging and making little houses under the sand. Im not shore if they're getting ready to molt. But i leave them in there for 24 hours long enough i guess? I like to feed them maybe some chicken and tuna. I also leave them a bowl of vegies and fruit. They LOVE that!!
First, the water dish is too small. Second if the Gravel is bad for them why would you put any in the tank? * Did anyone one else hear her admit it's bad for them?* And third, painted and sculpted shells are bad for hermit crabs, paint can chip off and poison them, and the sculpted shells are usualy such and odd shape they can't figure out how to move so they can get out of tight spaces.... finaly NEVER 'bathe' your hermit crabs, you need to provide a dish deep enough for them to bate themselves
@123louisdude Yes you can use beach sand, i used it 2 times and it works just as well, i took the sand and took out all of the sticks and other things i didnt want in thare and then i put the sand into the oven for 10 min. on 350 to kill any bacteria or small insects, then i waited until the sand was cool and i put it into my crabitat.
The gravel is bad, the food is bad, the sponge is bad, the painted shells are bad, everything in the video is bad, very bad, and call themselves experts.
@FRIKITSUKI97 U have no idea what ur talking abut you dumb lil scum bag get with it and do the right thing for your hermit crab ive had hermit crabs for five years and i use almost everything in this vid so shut it
@justinbiberlishes Probably because your a little kid who bought them from a store thinking all they need is some beef and some soda. Get information before you say anything, I bet you put them in a cramped tank and picked them up while they were molting.
Hey i dont know much about hermit crabs and I might get one for christmas is that plastib bin cage realy good enoph for one hermit crab? everytime I look uo hermit crab care its always expert village! PLEASE REPLY!
@lucrenta9 well even if they are cheap u don't have 2 go calling Debbie a TROLL thats very mean how would u like it if she said u looked like a shitty ass with toilet paper coming out of it..... no hard feelings just making a exampale not 2 be rude. ;) ;)
@beakfast yeah i think you might be right but they do work at petstores so maybe their right? idk really know... i would prefer glass like you said! :) so u get a thumbs up from me!!! ^^^ :)
@foutzi10 They don't hold moisture well enough and they're not insulated like glass, but the worst thing is that bacteria culture in the pores of the plastic which supports mites and can actually end up putting somebody in the hospital if left unchecked
yes but I would also recommend having AT LEAST 2 CRABS or the one hermit crab will be lonely and will die, um the glass tanks are better (keeps the tank cleaner) I have 4 hermit crabs and I've had them for about a year now and they have been living well and healthy with the glass tank... MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! -BandD1000
@animalLovr302 no.... 10 gallon tank or more is better for the hermit crabs... this "expert village" doesnt no what the heck they are doing. If you have any questions ... you can send me a personal message and i Will answer them :)
Also, do not bathe them every day, it will stress them out.... only bathe once or twice a week, if any. I've had hermit crabs for many years and only bathe them about once a month. THey will bathe themselves in their water dishes when they feel it necessary.
This LADY DOES NOT KNOW what she is talking about!! DO NOT USE GRAVEL, DO NOT USE SPONGES!! The gravel can get in their shell and cut their soft abdomens. Also, they drink out of the DISH which needs to be large enough for them to bathe in, and sponges are just breeding grounds for germs. The sand needs to be deeper than THEM!! Also, use aquarium tanks, do NOT use that small plastic tank she has....
Yes Do not listen to this woman. I read off of websites and go better info then this. The petstore said use forest bark, but I was smart enough to go and buy a bag of play sand that had no holes or wierd smell.
DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS WOMAN!!!! GO TO A SITE CREATED BY A PRO!!!! SHE WILL KILL YOUR CRABS!!!! you can also ask me questions and I will answer you ASAP. I know everything about hermies. :)
@Corey111588 hey i need some info or hermmies, i love hermits but i don't know alot about them help me out???I went on a few sites but i know nothing!!
No! Bathing is completely unnecessary if they have a place that they can do that in their cage. That bathing dish is actually a good water dish for in the tank. As long as at least 70% humidity is maintained, crabs do not need to be bathed.
your not suppose to buy kits... idk why but my friend says some kits take short cuts that can be harmful to your hermie! and your suppose to have 2 hermies per gallon anything smaller than a half gallon gotta go! and hermies like to live in colonies so i recomend you get a gallon tank... the bigger the better tho!
Actualy the smallest Tank you should get is a 10 Gallon tank, and Kritter Keepers are no nos because they don't hold temp or humidity, plus they're easy to escape from.
The rule is: 1 Small per Gallon, 1 Medium per 2 gallons, one Large per 3 Gallon and 1 Jumbo per 5 gallons...
Then when they are fully developed, they get washed up on the shore and their gills eventually get modified so they could live on land. Then they go into a shell, molt, and join the hermit crab colony. Since the baby hermit crab needs the micronutrients of the salt water, the crabbage patch lady got a saltwater aquarium and put the hached hermit crabs in it. Unfortunately, they died after ten days. She suspects it is because she didn't get the cycles right.
3. ONLY Natural shells for the hermit crabs to change into
4. Dechlorinated Fresh and Salt Water that only contains sea salt! Hermit crab glub contains iodine and doesn't dechlorinate well. Hermit crabs need two water bowls one fresh, one salt.
5. Humidity and temperature gauges. The humidity and temperature should be between 72 and 80 degrees F and percent and must be monitored. Hermit crabs have modified gills so if the humidity is too low they will suffocate. (still more coming...)
Everything hermit crabs need that Debbie doesn't have:
1. A substrate that they could actually burrow in like playsand or coconut fiber. Calci sand is terrible because it clumps up when wet and then hardens! That could trap a hermit crab inside his/ her shell! Also, when hermit crabs molt they dig a cave. if they dig in calci sand the cave could collapse.
2. A glass aquarium, at least a ten gallon. Those critter keepers are way too small and don't hold in humidity!
Molting is the shedding of the hermit crabs exoskeleton, like how a snake sheds it's skin. It is how they grow. When they molt, they dig in the sand or coconut fiber so they have a dark, cave where they won't be disturbed. If they don't have correct substrate or not enough of it they will either produce too much of a hormone or die, or attempt a surface mot, which is very dangerous. When a hermit crab is molting he/she is extremely vulnerable and the new exoskeleton is still soft.. (more to come
Right after a hermit crab sheds it's exoskeleton it is unable to move, completely defensless against other crabs. Some hermit crabs are erm.... cannibals and the smell of a freshly molted crab can be appetizing. Also, surface molts are very stressful so even the stress could kill the crab.
After they shed their exoskeleton, hermit crabs eat it, since it contains a lot of nutrients that will harden the new exoskeleton and keep them healthy. So don't throw away the old exo (still more to come)
Omg guys, she started caring for crabs over 15 years ago. Dont you realize that 15 years ago, all you needed was a plastic tank, sand, crabs, shells, water, food. That was it, she thinks all this new stuff is not needed, and lots of others think that to. So stop yelling at her, i highly dought she goes on youtube anyway to see your comments. Back 15 years ago hermit crab care was easy, and so what if she is messing up, its her problem not yours! There are more hermit crab care advise out there.
Plastic tank, sand, crabs, shells, water, food is NOT what hermit crabs needed... it's just what people THOUGHT they needed back then. The hermit crabs needs never changed, people are just becoming less ignorant and more knowledgeable about hermit crabs, which is a good thing and should be celebrated. How long did her hermit crabs live in those 15 years? Not very long, I presume. :( Probably a year at most. In the wild, hermit crabs can live up to 60-80 years.
It is very difficult to breed hermit crabs in captivity and hasn't been successfully done yet. However, the crabbagepatch noticed a few of her female hermit crabs pregnant. Hermit crabs only mate when they feel like they are in the wild. She has her hermit crabs in a GIANT outdoors enclosure in Florida. In the wild, hermit crabs lay their eggs in the ocean and the baby hermit crabs absorb micro nutrients in the water.
wow i dont think this woman knows ANYTHING about care for hermit crabs! If there are ppl out there watching this and wanting to get a crab of there own, plz search the internet for other tips on caring for them becuz these videos just arent good enough
NO! BAD! BAD CRABITAT! needs more space needs more places to climb needs more water needs more sand needs a thermometer! little plastic cages are crap!

Second if the Gravel is bad for them why would you put any in the tank? * Did anyone one else hear her admit it's bad for them?* And third, painted and sculpted shells are bad for hermit crabs, paint can chip off and poison them, and the sculpted shells are usualy such and odd shape they can't figure out how to move so they can get out of tight spaces.... finaly NEVER 'bathe' your hermit crabs, you need to provide a dish deep enough for them to bate themselves

can you use beach sand and how do you clean it
123louisdude 1 year ago
@123louisdude Yes you can use beach sand, i used it 2 times and it works just as well, i took the sand and took out all of the sticks and other things i didnt want in thare and then i put the sand into the oven for 10 min. on 350 to kill any bacteria or small insects, then i waited until the sand was cool and i put it into my crabitat.
piotrekZ9 1 year ago
This has a LOT of misinformation in it! The only useful tip is spraying the hermit crabs with de-chlorinated water.
pe5t1lence 1 year ago
The gravel is bad, the food is bad, the sponge is bad, the painted shells are bad, everything in the video is bad, very bad, and call themselves experts.

wen i haff hermit crabs they smell NAND DIE AND DONT WANNA EAT AND GET FUSTRUATED AND DIE !!!
justinbiberlishes 1 year ago
@justinbiberlishes Probably because your a little kid who bought them from a store thinking all they need is some beef and some soda. Get information before you say anything, I bet you put them in a cramped tank and picked them up while they were molting.

animalLovr302 2 years ago
The plastic habitats are bad.You should get a glass ten gallon tank, also, more than one crab. They are very social creatures
beakfast 2 years ago 21
@beakfast welllll. these people are too cheap, and they are pretty stupid, and some of them even look like trolls! *ahem* DEBBIE!
lucrenta9 1 year ago
@lucrenta9 well even if they are cheap u don't have 2 go calling Debbie a TROLL thats very mean how would u like it if she said u looked like a shitty ass with toilet paper coming out of it..... no hard feelings just making a exampale not 2 be rude. ;) ;)
brennamelnyk 1 year ago
@brennamelnyk She does look like a troll for one, lol and two, it should be illegal for people like her to teach us anything. :)
ROckDEcoy 1 year ago
@beakfast yeah i think you might be right but they do work at petstores so maybe their right? idk really know... i would prefer glass like you said! :) so u get a thumbs up from me!!! ^^^ :)
brennamelnyk 1 year ago
@beakfast Why would the plastic habitats be bad?
foutzi10 1 year ago
@foutzi10 Yeah, You're just all around better off to get a glass one lol :)
beakfast 1 year ago
@foutzi10 They don't hold moisture well enough and they're not insulated like glass, but the worst thing is that bacteria culture in the pores of the plastic which supports mites and can actually end up putting somebody in the hospital if left unchecked
beakfast 1 year ago
yes but I would also recommend having AT LEAST 2 CRABS or the one hermit crab will be lonely and will die, um the glass tanks are better (keeps the tank cleaner) I have 4 hermit crabs and I've had them for about a year now and they have been living well and healthy with the glass tank... otaki25 2 years ago
Any pets store .... more exactly fish or aquarium stores!
walter7093 2 years ago
Also, do not bathe them every day, it will stress them out.... only bathe once or twice a week, if any. I've had hermit crabs for many years and only bathe them about once a month. THey will bathe themselves in their water dishes when they feel it necessary.
Jessa1818 2 years ago
This LADY DOES NOT KNOW what she is talking about!! DO NOT USE GRAVEL, DO NOT USE SPONGES!! The gravel can get in their shell and cut their soft abdomens. Also, they drink out of the DISH which needs to be large enough for them to bathe in, and sponges are just breeding grounds for germs. The sand needs to be deeper than THEM!! Also, use aquarium tanks, do NOT use that small plastic tank she has....
Jessa1818 2 years ago
she says we need a good feeding dish well the only dish i saw was crap

do they need a separet tank when the molt?
horseluvagirl 2 years ago
No they just need plenty of dirt or sand whatever you have to molt in which they should already have.
Sydee67 2 years ago
Yes, an ISO tank is needed. Only for surface molters and new crabs
manolo578 2 years ago
No! Bathing is completely unnecessary if they have a place that they can do that in their cage. That bathing dish is actually a good water dish for in the tank. As long as at least 70% humidity is maintained, crabs do not need to be bathed.
thegoalie222 2 years ago
Actually that dish isn't good for water because they might not be able to get out of it when they are done and they could drown.
Sydee67 2 years ago
This is very wrong. Hermit crabs cannot drink from sponges. They need a dish to completely submerge in. This lady is a complete idiot!
thegoalie222 2 years ago
Wrong my Hermit Crab uses a sponge and that is all it needs for a drink from it never bothered it before

Do you have to clean thier bath everyday?
Flamingfiredude 2 years ago
your not suppose to buy kits... idk why but my friend says some kits take short cuts that can be harmful to your hermie! and your suppose to have 2 hermies per gallon anything smaller than a half gallon gotta go! and hermies like to live in colonies so i recomend you get a gallon tank... the bigger the better tho!
hahaz075 2 years ago
Actualy the smallest Tank you should get is a 10 Gallon tank, and Kritter Keepers are no nos because they don't hold temp or humidity, plus they're easy to escape from.
The rule is: 1 Small per Gallon, 1 Medium per 2 gallons, one Large per 3 Gallon and 1 Jumbo per 5 gallons...
LefttoDream 2 years ago
Then when they are fully developed, they get washed up on the shore and their gills eventually get modified so they could live on land. Then they go into a shell, molt, and join the hermit crab colony. Since the baby hermit crab needs the micronutrients of the salt water, the crabbage patch lady got a saltwater aquarium and put the hached hermit crabs in it. Unfortunately, they died after ten days. She suspects it is because she didn't get the cycles right.
polkadotlover34 2 years ago
(still more coming...)
polkadotlover34 2 years ago
Everything hermit crabs need that Debbie doesn't have:
1. A substrate that they could actually burrow in like playsand or coconut fiber. Calci sand is terrible because it clumps up when wet and then hardens! That could trap a hermit crab inside his/ her shell! Also, when hermit crabs molt they dig a cave. if they dig in calci sand the cave could collapse.
2. A glass aquarium, at least a ten gallon. Those critter keepers are way too small and don't hold in humidity!
More to come...
polkadotlover34 2 years ago
what's molting?
FortJB7 2 years ago
Molting is the shedding of the hermit crabs exoskeleton, like how a snake sheds it's skin. It is how they grow. When they molt, they dig in the sand or coconut fiber so they have a dark, cave where they won't be disturbed. If they don't have correct substrate or not enough of it they will either produce too much of a hormone or die, or attempt a surface mot, which is very dangerous. When a hermit crab is molting he/she is extremely vulnerable and the new exoskeleton is still soft.. (more to come
polkadotlover34 2 years ago
Right after a hermit crab sheds it's exoskeleton it is unable to move, completely defensless against other crabs. Some hermit crabs are erm.... cannibals and the smell of a freshly molted crab can be appetizing. Also, surface molts are very stressful so even the stress could kill the crab.
After they shed their exoskeleton, hermit crabs eat it, since it contains a lot of nutrients that will harden the new exoskeleton and keep them healthy. So don't throw away the old exo (still more to come)
polkadotlover34 2 years ago
Omg guys, she started caring for crabs over 15 years ago. Dont you realize that 15 years ago, all you needed was a plastic tank, sand, crabs, shells, water, food. That was it, she thinks all this new stuff is not needed, and lots of others think that to. So stop yelling at her, i highly dought she goes on youtube anyway to see your comments. Back 15 years ago hermit crab care was easy, and so what if she is messing up, its her problem not yours! There are more hermit crab care advise out there.
MrNagrom124 2 years ago
Plastic tank, sand, crabs, shells, water, food is NOT what hermit crabs needed... it's just what people THOUGHT they needed back then. The hermit crabs needs never changed, people are just becoming less ignorant and more knowledgeable about hermit crabs, which is a good thing and should be celebrated. How long did her hermit crabs live in those 15 years? Not very long, I presume. :( Probably a year at most. In the wild, hermit crabs can live up to 60-80 years.
polkadotlover34 2 years ago
srry if u dont know this question did u ever breed hermit crabs ? T_T
HorseRider1123 2 years ago
It is very difficult to breed hermit crabs in captivity and hasn't been successfully done yet. However, the crabbagepatch noticed a few of her female hermit crabs pregnant. Hermit crabs only mate when they feel like they are in the wild. She has her hermit crabs in a GIANT outdoors enclosure in Florida. In the wild, hermit crabs lay their eggs in the ocean and the baby hermit crabs absorb micro nutrients in the water.
