People were killed in an earthquake in my hometown in 1989. Quakes are commonplace in central coast California. Sometimes there would be a big "craaack" when the timbers of the house shifted, and hangings would sway for a while. I've experienced them in places they are not common and I've seen people that are not aware they are in the middle of one. There would have to be buildings collapsing for them to notice. So help me, I REALLY felt Japan's earthquake...when I was in Idaho! No kiddin'!
