fazioli is tied with steinway in my opinion, especially on sound. They sound almost identical, but Id have to go with Steinway because its just classy
I have a Steinway grand and have played on a Fazioli grand and in my experience, nothing compares to the feel of my Steinway. I love the ivory keys on the Steinway.
As a long time Steinway fan, I was amazed at the clarity of this Fazioli even on a crappy camera mic. I think Fazioli may well be the Steinway of the next 100 years.
But your performance brought tears to my eyes. I cannot imagine a more sensitive or moving performance of the Rachmaninoff 2nd Piano Sonata slow section.
I play it over and over. I would love to have your entire performance.
This piece does sound differently on a Fazioli as opposed to a Steinway. I do find this particular fazioli somewhat bright. It could use some voicing. Maybe this is personal taste. Angela Hewitt plays on a Fazioli and it is certainly a wonderful piano. As with any instrument be it Steinway, Yamaha, Fazioli, etc. you can have good and bad.
Although I find this fazioli rather bright, I do find that your performance is very musical and colourful.
Two of my customers own Faziolis(I'm a piano tech. I'm rather sorry that the owner of the larger one(a 6'10")had traded their Steinway B for it. The Steinway had more of a "soul".
The Fazioli while impressive is perhaps just too "perfect" sounding making it kind of sterile.
Uhh, I'm really upset that he didn't record the entire movement. It was beautiful. And yes, a very unique sounding piano. I'm used to that big Steinway sound Horowitz used to get playing this piece and this was quite nice.
Fazioli's are built masterfully and finished impeccibly. However, the sound of these instruments does not quite do it for me. These pianos are far more suited to jazz. The tone is not quite interesting enough for classical.
Horowitz's Steinway D, especially in the bass notes, was a masterpiece of tone. Look out for the older Mason & Hamlin CC's. They are even more interesting than the D.
Horowitz got a big sound from his Steinway because of how he played it. His instrument was actually inferior, but happened to suit his taste (Glenn Gould also played on inferior pianos sometimes if something about them suited his needs - witness his famous recordings of the Bach inventions on a piano that was simply ghastly). The Hamburg Steinways were and are far better than the New York ones. Franz Mohr, Horowitz's long-time tuner and technician, agrees. So does Maurizio Pollini.
I have a Fazioli. One can voice it many ways, and I like it less glassy. But the best thing of all is that all inner voices can always be heard. Finding a good technician is very difficult. The sound it plain, so the pianist must be quite musical. It plays what you put into it. It is A++ for 20th century music. subwaysleuth

Thed Fazioli piano sounds extremely clean and clear. It is clearly capable of communicating the best of piano music.
The performance is also very good.
I wish the other 2 movements were included here with this YT as I really love it.
BRAVO to both.

ppl, u cant determine the quality of a piano through a youtube video. especially when recorded unprofessionally.

@mUsr001 And especially recorded through the crappy built in mic of whatever device used to record here, which only captures the midrange.

I have heard many pianists play this piece. I cannot imagine a more sensitive or beautiful performance.
I play it over and over. I would love to have your performance of the entire work.

I agree, it has an almost hyper-japanese quality to it, but with a lot of mass. It sounds like pure bell-tones.
Probably great for bach, new-age. If you want a dirtier sound, get an old piano.

I might disagree about this piano being too perfect as sounding sterile need not be an indication of perfection.
The Yamaha, Schimmel and Shigeru all have that same "sterile" or near soul-less tone. These simply lack the needed color.

Search YouTube for Valentina Lisitsa playing Rachmaninoff Etude Tableau Op 39 No 6 for that very special Steinway D bass tone.

Lets not forget a piano needs someone who makes it sound, to put life into it. And this pianist certainly did, very nice interpretation!

I also find that it is exceptional for Bach. To me, the Steinways give Bach too much of a romantic tinge. Glenn Gould would have loved Faziolis.
