The "amount of gold" is not really an issue. When the dollar was gold-backed it was worth 1/20 oz. of gold (gold was $20 per oz.) Over the past 100 years paper money was printed recklessly, while the gold supply remained relatively static. Today the "dollar" is worth about 1/740 oz. of gold (gold is $740 per oz.) The market isn't fooled.

Anyone watching this who has a middle or lower wage job knows what ron paul is talking about. Been to the grocery store lately? The long term forcast for food cost inflation is poor. As someone who doesn't use credit cards or credit at all, it made me angry when the fed lowered the interest rate. My dollar gets weaker, everything costs more, people are more likely to use their credit and the rich get richer.

The benefit of having a greater distribution of precious metal assets, wether as a standard backing, a direct standard, or just a more widely proliferated metals market, is that it gives people some sense of insurance against the inflation of the currency. For instance, an oz. of silver is about $13 bucks right now, after the dollar crashes it'll be worth at least $50 - the more people that have that kind of insurance, the wider a secondary net of monetary confidence is spread.
