AIII will only be avail when certain parameters are met eg both ILS receivers tuned to the ILS, both baro alts agree within 50', mag track within 15deg of course etc. Outside this and AIII wont be selectable. Hope this makes sense.
Not sure what you mean by "pops" but AIII was flashing, indicating that all parameters were in place to allow it to be selected if desired. In this case it was not selected, the HUD was left in primary mode and IMC mode selected at 800'.
But as I said the app was hand flown from about 22 secs - FD is indicated in the FMA top right.
@TiB522 oh ya, i saw the vid carefully and i heard the ap disengage :) thanks for the reply, it was helpful, now i know what to do in my pmdg ngx in fsx XD
It means that AIII mode is available, but not in use. The AIII mode uses inputs from both ILS receivers and other aircraft systems to provide guidence on the ILS and also for the roundout for touchdown, and then the rollout on the groundrun. In theory it can be used to land down to minimas of 0/0, ie full fog, depending on ground based equipment. There is a video showing AIII mode.
@TiB522 The 737-800 has rollout? I flew the 300 (classic) and we only had 2 autopilots so were CAT 3A only, It didn't control the rudder so we didn't have rollout. Does the NG have 3 autopilots and able to rollout?
Roll out GUIDANCE. ie hand flown witha guidance cue, which on touchdown changes to lateral guidance left and right to track the LLZ, using rudder pedal and NWS. So no A/P, all hand flown.
@TiB522 Ahhh I see, Thanks for that! I've got mates at fly dubai on the 800. They say the HUD is a great bit of kit. Very sensitive. So you do manually flown CAT 3A approaches?
Radio Altimeter. The rad alt becomes active at 2500 feet above ground. You can see the digital readout appear just below the boresight showing "2500" and then reduce as the approach progresses. It is completely independant of the barometric altitude shown on the scale on the right side of the display.
What you can see isn't the HUD disappearing. Its the edge of the glass it is projected onto. If you don't look from the right angle you cant see all of the HUD display. This video is of a 737 modeled in FSX, but it demonstrates well the way your viewing angle effects the HUD.

may I ask why "minimums" wasnt called out by the computer?
Opiuth 4 months ago
@Opiuth
It's not activated. Many readouts are selectable by the aircraft operator to best suit their procedures and requirements.

Only in the sim, where it works really well. Ground equipment standards and local regs limit its use but one day...
I believe Alaskan uses it to pretty low minimas, and some European operators, but not sure.

the HUD is much easier but not actually necessery, a professional and serious pilot dont need a HUD, it only makes it too easy.

Because if that IS what you are saying, then that's wrong! That is definitely real life.

Just to confirm guys (and girls), its a real 737-800.
I posted these videos as a lot of people on the PMDG site seemed interested in the details of the HUD, as they are about to release their new 737NG
flight sim.
