  • What is that- a candelabra/saxophone? I don't know but it's totally awesome!!!

Also, is it weird that I somehow knew what movements Bob Geldof was doing to do before he did them? I was making those same movements myself... :P

  • yes its a bit naff and bob does overdo the gestures but hey this was a good symbolic victory in those early post punk years when they knocked Grease off the the top. fair play lads it stands up to time ok.thanks

  • Did you notice Geldof is wearing a medal? And then in the 80s he got a real one for feeding the world.

  • Don't like monday what a classic song !

  • I was only 6 years old and had a brain tumor; but I still have the single; one of their best songs; shame they didn't have more, the potential was there!

  • good bass playing here!

  • How did he get a Saxaphone sound out of that Candle holder?

  • @Aromaticduck Lip-syncing.. though in this case it would be sax syncing I guess. It can't possibly produce a real sound!

  • These cunts still going

  • this band was turd.a total joke

  • good god, bob geldof is an awful singer haha

  • this song ROCKS!

  • 33 years ago!... Ouch!

  • couldnt stand these twats

  • Why has this only got 29,129 views???!!! This is how you do it on TOTP, totally original, never been done before or since. . .

  • A great track...it sort of kicked its way on and made Bob what he is today...he's still fighting oppression..shame he married a bitch but at least he's well rid

  • A very young Bob lol x

  • He can sing, just not great at miming

  • still sounds good much better than the hyped hollywood hit they knocked off the top when I liked both songs at the time was a teenager back then

  • sweet jesus! the first record i ever bought

  • Huh? those lyrics sound wrong, surely it was "and puss and grime ooze from it's scab crusted sores"? he sand "blood and tears" ???

  • @6PBP6 sorry, i meant "sang" not "sand" ...

  • @6PBP6 The version you know is the album version unlike the single which is the one here, and is what got to no. 1.

The Rats censored a number of their singles to make them airplay friendly. Like Clockwork is another one - 2 lines were cut out for the single. "you're born in tears and you die in pain...." Both are on my list of tracks that appear with the "wrong" version on compilation CDs.

  • @bfbsmm thanks for the explanation. It sounds feasible, although I had the single (on the Ensign Label) and I am pretty sure my single had the "puss and grime" lyrics and the alternate ones hit me like a train when I heard them, I would have to check to be sure though :-)

  • Okay, I'm sure this has been said many times before, but I'm pretty new to these guys...but, Mick Jagger, anyone? lol

  • Great Bass playing

  • @voicesoffear Bob also used a candleabra in the music video for one short but funny moment when Pete Briquette tries miming the saxophone but notices the mouthpiece is missing. The camera then turns to Bob who has the mouth piece attached to the candleabra.

  • does anybody have the original video?????

  • How long do you think it took Geldof to come up with his choreography for this performance?

  • What a song !!!!!

  • ...Not that many people can get a tune out of a Candle-stick holder...he looks alot like the Man that was in Band Aid as well...

  • @peter007taylor The lead singer is the man from Band Aid, Live Aid and Live 8, Bob Geldoff.

  • 4th year senior school fab memories of the school disco. Boys one side of the hall, girls other side of the hall !! ha ha fab days long gone now. Thought you were fab cos you knew all the words ha ha :)

  • Best Top of the Pops performance ever!!! Goodbye John and Olivia.

  • jesus they were shit.........

  • Classic..... ne.... iconic lyrics. Sadly the performance should have been more.

  • They look like they're having such a good time.

  • First record i ever bought

  • @AMBASSODOR ...so it was you....

  • Wowie...that was sooo rad.....that start was a cheap giveaway,.like kicking in an open door, time hasn't been kind to this 'new wave' troupe,

This lot went out like a candle indeed.

The Pistols had Vicious, this lot,Johnny pyjama.

    Sad cabaret.

  • He can't sing!

  • @BRUTUALTRUTH

    Who can?

  • @MartiW lol :D

  • I remembered that moment very well when Bob tore up the John Travolta picture after he and Olivia spent 16 of the last 21 weeks at No.1. We needed fresh faces at No.1 and who better than Bob and the boys!!!!

  • the Rats had more than two hits, She's So Modern, Someone's Looking At You, Banana Republic, Looking After Number One and Diamond Smiles

they had two No 1's Mondays & Rat Trap

    vastly underrated band

  • @adeykins Agree, loved eva braun as well.

  • can remember this performance as if it was yesterday the ripping up of the photo of john revolting, grease was all the rage then and then along came the rats pure brilliance dont make,em like they use to!!!!!!

  • Classic music, rat trap, love it!!!!

  • just got their greatest hits -fab, except you have to wade through all of Geldorfs crap solo stuff!

  • Sorry but these were shit! They only had two hits didnt they?

  • @sweetassnumba7 Shit! Only 2 hits! How many hits have you had???

  • It´s a rat trap - and we`ve been caught !

    NOVUS ORDO RERUM...

  • I think when there was ever a song symbolising the 70's it was this song.Brings back fantastic memories...thnx!

  • @Roberto9722 And olivers army

  • why is no one mentioning he is playing a candle?

  • I presume it's a joke about having to mime on Top of the Pops.

  • @MalachiBordman why? he looks a twat

  • If it was Saturday night, how come little Judy was trying to watch Top of the Pops? Surely the family weren't rich enough to have a video?

  • no radio killed the video star lol

  • Love this song and the BTR but it is funny to think that John Travolta did have the last laugh after all.

  • Who is the person in the broken picture at the beggining of the video?

  • I think he says "death and fear pour down the drains and the sewers"

Yep! Sounds like Dublin in the 70s!

  • I was a kid but this was great, I'm old now and it's still great, question is , where did those fuckiing years go ???

  • @Rawlinson18 here i saw them go quick also, dont worry!!!!

  • @Rawlinson18 very good question mate, I remember seeing this the first time round too.

  • @Rawlinson18 - got to agree with you there - tiswas or swap shop ?

  • @naashead Both my friend, and not a five gear chopper in sight, great init, now i can afford all those things i longed for in those days, me thinks i'd look like a total chopper on a chopper, fuck i'll give it a go, have to be downhill though Lol.

  • @Rawlinson18 You've had them, that's where they've gone. I hope you remembered to enjoy them :)

  • Though I liked both this song and Travolta's, I can't imagine that John is upset about his picture being ripped up. Look where he is today compared to geldorf. Last laugh I guess.

  • I'd been looking for the performance where they ripped up the grease pictures for ages. thanks. By the way, does anyone know what bob say swhen he usually would say 'pus and grime ooze from its scab-crusted sores'

  • I already know the date guys. IIRC 16th November 1978. When Grease was knocked off number 1 and they was tearing up the Travolta pictures.

  • The BBC made them change 'pus and grime ooze from its scab-crusted sores'. Good ol' aunty

  • remember this well nov 78,knocking grease of number 1,the rats were fantastic i bought the album tonic for the troops that yr,70s was great for music great era wheres it all gone.

  • Ha.

Actually remember watching this on TOTP back in '78... they'd just knocked one of the Grease songs off number one, hence the tearing up of the Travolta pics at the start.

    Excellent lyricist.

    YNWA Bob

  • You'd never think that the great Gob Belledoff could have matured into such a looker as we see in front our eyes today. He had asked for the wisdom of Methusela but Bush got their first so Bob got the lookes inched Ted.
