So good to see proper contested scrums with a straight feed! Every single feed in the modern game would have been called foul back then. None of the touch, pause, engage shit either.
@Nickthetoast Until 1978, both attacking and defending players could call for a mark on a kick from anywhere on the field, given certain (complex) conditions. This allowed a player to attempt a "goal from mark", which I think the IRB abolished at the end of 1977 or '78.
Today's Union is too similar to league - it's an odd thing to say but too many tackles are made, too many players don't get involved at the breakdown and there isn't enough space to run into in midfield.
Injuries are another concern with the massive first time hits in midfield.
Give me Guscott and the 89 Lions v Oz anyday or Scotland and New Zealand rucking each other to kingdom come - now those two teams really knew how to ruck till about 1990.
no offense mate but rugby is much better these days, i love rugby now because you dont see any 11 stone flankers any more the stuff nowadays is proper whereas before it was to uptight and resricted like props used to just prop the scrum now they run and tackle

Extraordinary stuff. Remember watching it in the middle of the night, trying to figure out what was happening in the dark at the end.

At 3.42, the Scottish guy "called for the mark" in the opposition half! Could you do that back then, with any catch anywhere on the pitch?

Certainly a faster and more skillful game these days, but I do miss seeing some good solid rucking.
