  • sucks for you yanks,i live in northern europe (scandinavia) and its impossible for earthquakes to happen because we are in the middle of the continental shelf.so jokes on you yanks!

  • i'm not scared but i'm amazed on how you made the video.....nice one....

  • you must all be really prepared but NOT scared.. whats the point of living if it means living in FEAR....... everybody keeps saying it will happen soon... MAYBE... but WE DONT KNOW... it might happen in a very long time too so while STAY PREPARED do not freak out .... cause life is too short to be freaking out everydays ...

  • This is no joke! We need to get prepared NOW! There's nothing stopping this earthquake. It's sad many of us, including myself, are not prepared for this. We need to act now. Come on So-Cal!

  • My science teacher showed this to us

...Why must the music be so awesome

  • If you're on a helicopter you will run out of fuel...since you can't predict an earthquake. If you take off when the quake strikes, you could crash. Get on a boat far off the coast...call me if you have room on the boat. ;-)

  • today during school my social studies teacher showed us this video, and like freaked me out!

  • when is this sopost to happen? im so scaredd!

  • WTF this is like fucken 2012 in ca shit

  • WATER

Katadyn Survivor. Only pump in the world that can desalinate sea water. Drink straight from the Pacific.

  • I believe it will happen very soon- B from San Diego

  • um i don't think this will happen in 30 years, more like anytime now! i live in san diego. i'm so scared!

  • @youme150 While you are in the greenish area, I'm in the red. I'm scared too! 1:44

  • @TheCatburger I moved to LA LOL

  • The safest place to be during an earthquake, is inside a helicopter while it is in flight. That way, when the groud is shaking you will not be affected. And you will not need to land on a long runway that may be cracked as an aircraft would need to do so.

  • prepare

  • i watch this everytime after an earthquake happens. a earthquake just occured 6.9 in baja california, mexico. i live in los angeles and it was pretty long.

  • god bless south america xD

  • wats the song's name

  • guys be proactive. get prepared. make sure your home is quake ready and quake proof. bolt down your furniture. stock up on canned goods and water. start a victory garden as well, btw. nothing like fresh produce to liven up your emergency food and regular pantry as well.

  • omg we watched this at school today and it totally freaked everyone out!

  • lol i watched it too yesterday

  • The San Andreas fault is not a single, continuous fault, but rather is actually a fault zone made up of many segments. Movement may occur along any of the many fault segments along the zone at anytime. The San Andreas fault system is more than 1300km (800 miles) long, and in some spots is as much as 16km (10 miles) deep.

  • Now Palm Springs and San Bernadino on the other hand will be fucked when the "Big One" happens since they are almost right on top of the SA Fault. Also in the northern segment of the SA, it cuts right thru the Bay Area including San Francisco so they'll be fucked too if the "Big One" from SA happens there ie Great 1906 San Fran Quake, but the southern segment is more likely to rupture within the next 30 years since it hasn't ruptured for over 300 years. Now the good news about Puente Hills is..

  • The "Big One" is most likely going to happen at least a 100 miles away from LA. The southern SA Fault passes thru mostly desert such as Palm Desert and the Mojave but Puente Hills passes right under the heart of the LA area and parts of Orange County which is a highly populated and developed area where a lot more debris will be falling on people. I know there are many other faults in the area but the size and geometry of this fault makes it perhaps the most dangerous in the area.

  • Downtown LA has dozens of Northridge generating earthquake faults that could erupt at any momment. Even if they aren't the "big one", they could tear the city in half and cause a heap amount of damage.

  • @Psythr666 true...i was at csun during the northridge quake in 94! our freeways were broken. the buidlings fell down. a NEW PARKING STRUCTURE COLLAPSED! you better believe there was BIG SCRUTINY on the builders! we kept having aftershock-after-aftershock.

  • @rosrychaplet

Several relatives of mine experienced the quake in the LA area. Who knows what might happen if the maximum rupture where to occur.

  • The Puente Hills Fault runs right under downtown LA. This fault can produce quakes of 7.2-7.5 although not as big as the "Big One" but its location under downtown and the LA basin area makes it much more dangerous. Worst case scenario: 7.5 quake centered under downtown. Experts are projecting that if this happens, there could be 3000-18000 deaths, over $250 billion in damage, 56000-268000 injured, 142000-735000 homeless households. This would be more catastrophic than the "Big One". Damn 500 cha

  • Pretty nice video. Great job.

  • ok i live in orange county and this damn video isnt doing anything for my nerves. Whoever made this probably knows they dont live anywhere near the san andreas fault so they can just scare people to death.....gosh

  • @fabulousarah be proactive instead. get prepared!

  • for sure...

    but good motion graphics

  • what is google xD

  • We had the shakeout in a huge lecture hall seating 280 people - too bad so many didn't take it seriously, everyone thought it was corny.

  • This video is amazing.

  • I thought I recognized Barack!!

  • That was amazing.

  • Damn, that was amazing.

  • We watched this at school. It was kinda scary. I was just thinking if that really DID happen while the vid was going.

  • Cattq get a life! You are ridiculous! I mean seriously. What does what you are spewing about have to do with Earthquake Preparedness?

  • Theo, I think you just saved my life!

  • OK, so if the "big one" hits, we will take in a family for as long as they need. We live in Colorado, a little far, but with free room and board. :) AS LONG AS WE HELP OTHERS, THERE IS ALWAYS HELP AVAILABLE.

  • @stephanieco28 So I'm gonna need your address....

  • This went up on the big screen at LA Live - Nokkia Plaza and nice sound system tonight -- and met Theo Alexopoulos who created this. On Nov. 13 I showed this to Governor Schwarzenegger, too. It is a great way to share our ShakeOut study results with everyone.

  • We should be prepared for anything. This seems to be earthquake scare week. For their project, they could have done a movie about any other natural or man made disaster that can strike the west coast. All you bible gushers are hilarious! Be sure you pray! Oh it's Armageddon! Hey why don't you commit suicide so you can go live in the afterlife? Oh Matthewoman, the earthquake is going to strike tonight! You better pray it doesn't!

  • when does the actual earthquake hit? im scared and im about to get owned please someone tell me what the date and time is starts

  • no one knows thats why everybody has to prepare for it when it happens

  • smartin1 - I sure hope that you're ok when the big one hits, who will you be angry at then?

  • Catastrophes happen all over, you just gotta make do where you live! I see why you would say that about Californians; it's the same way I feel about people who live in the areas that are prone to Hurricanes. I can't understand why people live there when it happens every year!there's no maybe, it's always a definite. On the otherhand, I've lived in CA for 22 years, have felt many small earthquakes & was in the Bay area for the '89 quake.

  • cont. Yes, a big one will happen but we don't live worrying about it, it's not like living on the east coast during hurricane season,I'll take west coast anyday! The purpose of the video is to make sure people understand the extent of what will happen in an earthquake and be prepared. It's not a ride at Universal Studios!

  • I wouldn't live in a hurricane-prone area either, but at least those are safer since you know when they're coming. You have time to get to safety before it hits. Earthquakes can't be predicted in any weather forecast.

  • I want to move back to Cali, but this terrifies me. I don't see how getting under a table is going to save you if your building collapses on top of you.

  • So... why the hell would anyone want to live there? It's like tempting fate. It may be boring where I live, but at least we're not worried about an overdue "big one."

  • This isn't Propaganda people! This is MOTHER NATURE!!! We have no control over this! So all you people who keep comparing this to scare tactics used by the U.S. government after 911 need to educate yourselves and stop being so IGNORANT! This is to help people to know what to do and how to be prepared! After Hurrican Katrina we saw what mother nature could do! SO EDUCATE YOURSELVES!!! This video is to help people be aware of what could possibly happen. Geez! And lets all pray it doesn't happen.

  • this isnt propaganda its RL!

terror threat vids that you will be bomb anytime is propaganda, calling it propaganda is ignorant... and this are the same ppl who will bash ur gov when it happens, saying not enough preparation, no planning etc... only a fool will take this as a tool to scare the public...

  • we're way overdue....

  • Lol ill probably move to another state.

  • it takes more than an hour to move to another state... ya better book...

  • To everyone here. The eaathquake is set for the next 30 YEARS

  • Actually it can happen between now and the next 30 years. 30 years is the estimate. Just be prepared is what the message is trying to portray.

  • this kinda glorifies the whole disaster scenario

  • no water and no electricity for months?!

yesh, kind of makes u not wanna live here anymore =[

  • I've lived in L.A. and experienced every Earthquake since the 70's. I've been taught to be prepared for an earthquake since. Is there really anyone out there who doubts there's going to be a big one in our future? I don't. What I don't fall for is advertised fear that comes in waves. Remember the Homeland Security threat levels on the nightly news after 911? What happened there. people love this shit! That video was nothing more than an art department project.

  • yeah but it said evry 150 years, and it has been 300 years!

  • i am scared!!!!

  • Its in the next 30 years.

  • 30 years?? more like any time now... we are way beyond due.

  • bravo aria73! i couldn't agree more.

  • well, i do agree that a big percentage of the people out there are retards. my fave guy was toastkiller who commented earlier:

"i realize that the fact that it says its tomorrow is a hypothetical situation but my school has an earthquake drill tomorrow... at 10 am..."

FYI, this video is a promo for that same earthquake drill that you had today toastkiller

  • This video doesn't scare me. Instead it educates me what to do during an earthquake. It also educates me on how to be prepared for if one comes. If I am to die in an Earthquake (God Forbid) then it was meant to be but it doesn't hurt to be prepared and know what to do in case there is one. I don't know why everyone is thinking this is to instill fear in people it is a reality. It could happen. Maybe in our lifetime or maybe not. Let's Educate one another and not be Ignorant people!

  • the video isn't about spreading fear. the purpose is to encourage preparedness by making the projections clear to a public that is largely unaware, and to help people feel empowered in the face of the destruction that could occur by doing so. if you are feeling afraid and paranoid, perhaps it is because you are not as ready as you should be.

  • I don't think this video is successful in encouraging preparedness, since half of the idiots who saw it and commented above seem to think an ACTUAL earthquake is going to hit CA today, rather than a drill.

Pretty sad indication of how eager the American public is to latch on to any perceived threat and start panicking.

OTOH, I bet a lot of bottled water and canned beans were sold today. Evian and Bush's Beans are probably happy.

  • the song is an original by director/designer/animator, theo alexopoulos, and hip-hop music producer, josh temkin, as credited at the very end. i love the song too.

  • I was joking. Spread the fear and paranoia. MTV style.

  • hahahah +1

  • sick video! Who's the band? Thing is hilarious spread the fear and panic propaganda. Yeah I better have a good fire extinguisher, I'll be fine!

  • If you Love 2Pac, check out this vid, long live Pac

    /watch?v=zAir7eEViIk

  • Is this avail in different languages?

  • This video is awesome, and an important message.

    Great work on the graphics.

  • I hope this shit happens. Can't wait.

  • Yeah, hope you are in CA when it does. Jerk!

  • lol

  • I LOVE THIS VIDEO

  • well done.

  • question (and i guess i reciprocate your love, o my brother): if this event is God's judgment, as you say, why then is there a pattern of it occurring every 150 years. hath His arbitrary and just wrath developed a suspicious pattern? one, say, that could not reflect our time but rather some 150-year coincidence that never ceases to incite his rage?

  • lol, best reply to that psycho yet

  • What's wrong with you? We're talking about an earthquake drill here. So please, let peace be among us all...

  • What are you drilling for? Whe the lord send judgement your drill can do little to safe.

The only drill you need now IS TO GO ON YOUR KNEES AND ASK JESUS TO SAFE YOU AND YOUR CITY.PERADVENTURE HE WILL ANSWER YOU AND DELIVER U AS A PERSON OK.I LOVE U THAT IS WHY AM WRITING 2 U PEOPLE OK.

  • Sorry, but I'm not a Christian. So I don't kneel to Jesus. Thanks for the warning anyway.. I just wished the world will be living in peace, and all people love each other, no matter what religion they are believing. We're all the same... Thanks..

  • you sure you're a christian? and you don't kneel to jesus?

  • i said i'm NOT a christian..why?well,i dont wanna talk about religion here...=(

  • I'm scawed!!!!!!!

  • dude you are pyscho and are probably going to hell for wishing death upon my family thnx

  • NICE JOB THEO! SWEET VOICE-OVER DAD! HEY WHO'S THAT CONSPICUOUS GIRL WITH THE PHONE?

ps. 1800 dead? 1500 buildings collapse? a likely story

  • Haha... that picture in the middle totally looks like the baby picture they always show of Barack Obama as a baby with his mother. I thought it was very interesting too that the line incorporated with that picture was "We will suffer the consequences.." the sentence went on, the visual of that picture ended when it got to the word consequences. Subliminal messaging perhaps? Lol... guess that's the conspiracy theorist in me.

  • I thought the same thing of the picture.

  • omfg the first part scared me!!! is there gonna be an earthquake tomarrow??? some1 told me there was!! if there is, is the first part of the vid gonna happen!! i need answers please!!!!

  • No, no. It's just a California-wide drill is all. Feel free to feel scared, though, considering the majority of people aren't quite prepared for an earthquake of that magnitude. ^-^

  • the death toll? I think so... check my reply two answers below... (of course they are all just estimates... soooo many variables)

  • It doesn't add up. 300,000 damaged buildings and 1500 collapsed ones would amount to a lot more deaths than 1800 and a lot more injuries than 53,000. That isn't even counting the hundreds of thousands of people that will be caught outside, on bridges, etc.

  • again you are pyscho go away no one wants you

  • Go on and prepare for the drill. When the real one comes you WILL SEE HOW PREPARED YOU WILL BE.U better repent for God to save u from the earth if it comes.Maybe in 1,2,3,4 etc yrs time.Oly Jesu can prepare you ok.U do not need 2 want me.Just take the word for ur safety ok.

  • you're an idiot.

  • God bless you beloved. When you repent GOD WILL TAKE AWAY EVIL SPEAKING AND ARROGANCY FROM YOUR MOUTH! THAT IS A SIGN TO YOU.THEN YOU WILL TALK SWEET WORDS ABLE TO DELIEVER THE SINNERS.THEN YOU CAN TAKE HEED TO WARNINGS OF DEATH!What use it to prepare to escape from Gods judgement instead of repenting TO BE DELIEVERED FROM THE JUDGEMENT! MAY THE LORD OPEN YOUR EYES TO SEE.

  • I'm almost glad people like thirdexodus exist... helps keep things in perspective.

  • jesus is dead... Pray to G-d instead, because praying to a dead person doesn't help you in any way...

  • Sorry JESUS is ALIVE AND IS ACTIVELY WORKING IN MANY PLACES.IF YOU WANT TO SEE HIM IN ACTION BELIEVE HIM AND CALL ON HIM.U SEEM TO BE IGNORANT OF HIS WONDERFUL WORKS?

  • Please don't estimate deaths based on the casualties in the twin towers. Buildings in California are not as tall and do not host as many people, largely due to strict earthquake building codes.

For any new residents of California, don't worry about it. Plan for the worst and hope it never hits. That's about all you can do. But don't waste any time worrying about it.

  • they didn't... they looked at what happened in other places in the world where large earthquakes happened.. and better safe than sorry it only takes a short time to prepare

  • I don't think they used 9/11 to estimate the estimated death toll in California. :/

I think they simply used the knowledge that we have at hand: daily average commuters, daily average people in buildings, according to company size, the age of buildings and the estimated ability to withstand a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, etc. etc. (I used daily because we're talking about 1 day)

The video is giving a positive message: prepare for the worst but hope for the best, and here's some help!

  • Since I didn't make it clear before, I was referring to a comment made below indicating that 1800 people was too low because of 9/11. I agree with the information provided here.

I also agree that we should be prepared. But after that, don't think about it until it happens. I've been through '89 Point Loma, '92 Landers, and '94 Northridge.

  • people dont forget to buy an assault rifle with armour piercing bullets to fight out the people who will fight for a bottle of water and a piece of bread

  • did anyone else see Obama as a baby with is mama???? ... or was it juat a look a like

  • This is soo sad! Even though I live hundreds of miles away, I still feel bad for everyone. I have family and friends in cali. God bless you all.

  • Just moved to CA from NYC. I'm kinda waiting for one, or the big one

  • damnit i'm damn scared. why must i live in orange county!

  • i agree...i remember the last earthquake that hit socal. wasnt more than 20 seconds but that was crazy. i think this going overboard tho.

cant wait to bounce.... but i have read articles that show california is going to get hit. lets just hope its norcal.

  • Ahahahaha! This is hilarious. Talk about scaremongering!!! If it happens, it happens. North, in SF, I've been through a few (including 1989)... and it's seriously not that bad, and the death toll is way lower than this implies. Even in LA area, the Northridge quake in '94, which was a 6.8, only killed 60 people!

Tornadoes in the Midwest kill more people EVERY YEAR! And these quakes rarely happen, so aren't worth the fear-mongering of this video! Ugh!

  • The energy goes up 33 times for a 1 magnitude increase. Looking at quakes around Mag. 7.8, like Turkey, China, & Guam, this is very realistic.

  • The insurance companies are behind this so people take out extra policy's for earthquakes. They are making money off of peoples fears. It is highly unlikely that an earthquake of this scale will ever hit.

  • They've hit before in that area: ~1700, 1812, & 1857.

  • Lots of businesses stand to profit by preying on people's fears...like the defense industry and the various wars we're involved in, for example. But while those businesses may exaggerate the threat in order to turn a profit, it doesn't mean the danger is nonexistent.

I do think this particular case is overdramatized, since we have idiots already thinking an ACTUAL earthquake will hit today. A couple scary pics and buzzwords and they panic.

The motion graphics in this piece are awesome, though.

  • You think in this case this video is OVERDRAMATIZED?? YOU can not even stand to watch it on a video LET ALONE be in it and that is why you call it "overdramatized".

  • reason for being over dramatized because no one give a crap about of will be happening in south California. So they decided to be more educational and help those people of south California to be more secure of potential 'big one' earthquake.

  • crap, I live in the red zone

  • So do I =/

  • This is pretty scary. I live 20 miles east of San Francisco and the bay area is also due for a pretty big earthquake. I have onnly been living here for 3 months so I have never experienced an earthquake and am pretty anxious.

  • OH MY GAWSH :P I live here waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa so scaryyyy no Im not kidding :P

  • holly shit this is so scary! i live in the bay area, do you think this earthquake will reach here!!!!

  • same. hopefully not.

  • We become complacent when it comes to disasters, we never think it will happen to us.

  • The golden state will get hit someday I just hope it can rebuild fast as it is so nice.

  • aww.. man... damnnnnn grrrr.... i wish we could just blow up this fault

  • hey thats obama! 2:35!

  • that's what I thought, too.

  • That's so depressing to think about.

God I hope that never really hapopens but you never know.

  • nah nothing tow orry about

  • I live in LA,and I have a little sister going to preschool tommorow! This is scary!

  • I have a friend that lives in Chino Hills with his family and i worry about them all the time.

  • I better pick up some fries to go with that shake...

  • We put up with 2-3 months of crappy weather (not including the snow which we like!), you on the other hand, must deal with mudslides, obscene traffic jams, that bitch Heidi from the Hills, firestorms, and, obviously, earthquakes. Glad I moved East when I did, have fun tomorrow and most importantly, be prepared!

  • but at least i'm lucky not to live in the midwest, they have a supervolcano(yellowstone)

its going to be much worse worldwide, seriously

  • Haha, I love your comment, Heidi from the Hills! Too funny! <3 it! OMG, you know I hate Lo! OMG, can't stand that skank. And yeah, California does go through a lot. I live in Tx...all we got is heat and some heavy rain once in a while and maybe a tornado but thank god I've never seen one in all my 20 years!

  • But, look back in your history about when Lubbock got slammed bad by tornadoes years ago. To say nothing of the Meers fault threat to TX/OK areas.

  • i realize that the fact that it says its tomorrow is a hypothetical situation but my school has an earthquake drill tomorrow... at 10 am...

if there's an earthquake ill eat my left shoe

after i dont need it anymore of course

  • "Only" 1500 people will die? That figure may be surprisingly low, but it should be lower. Each one of those 1500 is still a person, and you certainly don't want to be a figure yourself.

I live in the East Coast, so I'm kinda interested in how this will work out for Cali tomorrow...we have minor earthquakes where I live from time to time, but of course no one is really prepared...

  • You are not in the Charleston SC area are you.

  • Umm, I think it said 1500 buildings....200 more people. Yeah, and you're right noone wants to be one of those figures but I'm sure there's gonna be more than that.

  • I'm in northern Orange County, about 45 min. from LA and I'm just really worried about this =(

  • Go to God in prayers. The Lord Jesu is able to deliver USA and his people from the quake. If not tomorrow it will still come. This is by DIVINE ORDER AND CANNOT CHANGE.I WRITE TO WARN U PEOPLE!

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahaha

    always these priests saaying bulllshit

    this bastard is dead

  • Make sure u take part in the drill ok?It might come on a day u will not know. But then u will see the truth and who is dead then. How wonderful u will laugh in the face of danger!

  • yeah. this doesn't shoe what would happen during an earthquake. it just shows stats and things being cartoonishly broken. I expected accurate computer stimulation.

  • i live in the oc... i'm pretty freaked right now.)': the whole state is like... on a drill. O:<

  • Damn... I'm glad I live on the East coast!

  • WAIT A SECOND!!!!!!!!!! IS THIS GONNA HAPPEN TOMMOROW?!?!?!?! ...can someone please answer if this MAY happen tommorow? I live in SoCal,near L.A so yea, I need to know.

  • It's not predicting a date, it's telling you to prepare yourself for the next one. It's a hypothetical, but a realistic situation. So it doesn't matter if it happens tomorrow, or in a year. Get to preparing yourself. Pay attention. Geez.

  • At one part of the video, it states, going back to normal after the event... going back to normal everyday routine is not what you should do, your life if this happens, should be more directed and focused after this, eg. helping people. Its like 1000s of people starve, oh well, lets go back to normal life.

Make a difference, leave a legacy, change a generation, our lives are important, we can all do something.

  • ansamee, the numbers given are those projected by the scientists over at the us geological survey... keep in mind that although only 1,800 casualties are predicted, 53,300 is the number of injured.

  • Something is wrong with the numbers. 1,500 buildings will completely collapse, countless others damaged, and only 1,800 people will die?

  • Agree...so about 1-2 people are gonna die in each one of those 1,500 buildings..yeah, sure a lot more deaths would occur if that many buildings are gonna colapse. Think about how many people died on Sept. 11th in just 2 buildings!

  • i saw this same excact vid in band 2day

  • amazing video. skills.

  • Okay Everyone! This is to make us all aware of what to do if the big one happens. The point is to scare you so you are prepared and know what to do. This video is excellent! It educates us all on what to do. I have lived through several earthquakes and being prepared is essential. God Bless Us All!!

  • Good video. I'm in San Diego and accidentally came across this info. Haven't heard one word about tomorrow's drill in the media.

That's why media should be re-regulated.

The public safety and awareness should be first priority.

  • I know this is not a real earthquake. But is it really true about the damages and stuffs like that? Coz honestly, this one got me puzzled...T_T

  • thank you very much for allow me to no longer want to fall asleep at night :D

  • love the video. great job theo! (and btw the song is an original created for the video by the director, theo, and josh temkin as credited at the end)

  • whats the song called? i like it

  • i dont get it.. so dis info is lik what can happen or a real earthquake is gonna happen on the 13th???? IM SCARED!!!!!!..i live iin southern cali....omg dis is too scary -____-

  • dont worry babe, its a fake, they said on the news its just for everyone to practice for the real one in the future

  • Just wow to morons like bunnielover27 ... How is it realistic at all that government or any entity would have the ability to cause a 7.8 earthquake all across the San Andres fault line. On top of that, they only warn you through youtube and news casts? Really now... some people deserve to be shot.
