I was at this concert decked out in my Members Only Jacket and skinny tie, and was blown away, never could understand the bad rap they got for their live concerts.
Jene, I think there were/are a lot of people that didn't know the CARS had 2 vocalists. I have heard that time and time and time again. For a time growing up I thought the same thing, then found out that this was not the case. Both Ric and Ben were great, great vocalists in their way. We are lucky that we can watch all these videos and enjoy both of them..
@elprado1963 Precisely! I cannot say that I like Ben over Ric or vise versa... both men were/are immensely talented and each made The Cars one of the greatest bands of all time.
But yeah, growing up for a while in the 80's I had no idea Benjamin was even part of the band?!
(One more thing) I can't imagine the women who spent time with Benjamin Orr. It would seem like "how could they top that relationship"? The women are now older and I couldn't imagine living with loss for a big love like that. I feel for all of you women that loved Ben (personally). All I can say is that I pray for your release of anything that may be too heavy. Blessings to Ben's loved ones-
I just have to make this comment. (Love this song and Benjamin & The Cars rocked it.) Like many others, I didn't know that there even was a Ben; I thought Ric sang all the songs. Now that I know, I am kicking myself. I went to lots of concerts in So. Cal, but never saw The Cars even though I was a fan. I feel such a loss for someone I didn't even know until after they passed. I am having difficulty processing this.
Youtube search The Cars last interview--a six part interview from just months before Ben Orr passed away, and he was shockingly gaunt. He was willing to be with his band to the end, and his desire to be out in public in that state speaks to his greatness as a man. (don't search that video if you wish to remember Ben as he is here--but, he was willing to be on tape, so it's fair to watch if you desire). Cancer, the scourge of the earth. And pancreatic cancer is the scourge of all cancers.
He was Beautiful. Just caught their show last week in San Francisco. They keep his bass on stage and than play a song or two on it : ) Very touching! He is missed!

Double OMG - I can't believe how much Ben Orr looks like a guy I went out with when I lived in Perth, Western Australia about 26 years ago - He had such a beautiful, yet manly face and had such broad shoulders. He was also an incredibly talented artist and so funny, sigh! - God, I hope he's now bald and overweight!!!
@shrewgirl1 Ben Orr was Czechoslovakian-American, which is part of the reason he had such a smooth face. Ben aged well, he was about 40 when The Cars called it quits in the late 80s. Sadly, Ben became chubby during the late 1990s, but began losing weight. I saw Ben perform sometime around 96 or 97, can't remember. Sadly, Ben passed away in 2000 from pancreatic cancer, but apparently Ben had reconciled with the other members of The Cars, who remain his friends even after he passed on.

I was at this concert. The Cars were my favorite band, and I was very impressed with the way they sounded live. I am a fan of both Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr, and agree that Elliot Easton was underrated as a lead guitarist. So many good memories for me I am in a head-spin. I was surprised to find so many videos from that show on You Tube, it makes it even more special for me now.
I couldve licked Benjamin Orr from top to bottom of his body. This was to me the SEXIEST MAN!!! I have in my 48 years of life have ever seen. The sad thing was I was living in Houston at the time The Cars were there but I wasnt paying attention to what was going on around me cause I was too busy screwing my life up at that time!!! I wished I went to that concert. Ben I love and miss ya!! What a cruel way this man died.
I never knew Peter Cetera joined the Cars when he left Chicago. No but seriously whats with Ben's look in this? Did all the blond lead singer/bassists decide to look the same in 1984?
It was a great concert, the stage was surrounded by these giant confettie looking structures cut and colored with a brightness not evident in the videos. It was sooo loud. I remember my ears rang for at least 2 hours afterwards. It's wild, I had no idea they were shooting a video.
Ben Orr, are you kidding me. How great was he ???? This Band just kicked it time and time and time again. God, I loved these guys. You were the Best there ever was !!!!
Just awesome! I used to see this viedo at a bar in Milwaukee I hung at in the late 80's. Not many live on viedo songs that are better than the studio cut.

my favorite from Heartbeat City :) Ben never ceases to amaze and capture me! could watch this over and over again! Brings back the memories of being in this concert and breathing the same air as Ben! :) miss and love him every single day!
I remember the time when I first saw this video, I was like WHAAAAAT OH MY GOD!!! lol Also, since I was always most fond of Ric, I got goosebumps when he starting singing
@ myryckyz It seems that sweet Benny's natural hair colour was 'dirty blonde'/light brown! But I think that he suited his car both blonde and darker. True class!!!
I love the commanding presence that Benjamin has when he is playing his bass. Its hard to explain, but the way he moves his shoulders and his expression, its like he knows he is really in control. You Benjamin fans know what I mean. :)
Great show, I agree! I actually drew their (The Cars) stage from memory so I wouldn't forget it the next day after the show. I still have that drawing some 25 (gulp) years later.
What I remember most about seeing this concert live was that they were a band of few words...no jumpin up and down or getting the crowd to sing along. Strange for the time (1984), but they had a crystal clear sound for not having lots of technology like most boy bands have today that makes them sound good.
Great vid...btw...this is off-topic, but I'd like to let everyone out there reading this know the Chinese Communist Party has been persecuting 70 million Falun Gong practitioners for 10 years in China. The media doesn't cover it. It must stop, so they can be free like we are here. Thanks.
Saw the Cars 4 times....loved the from their first relase in 1978. These vids are great. I don't think they ever perfected their concert sound system....Hawkes keyboards were such a big part with so many different sounds they couldn't capture it live like they could of with today;s technology...
Was sad to hear about Ben Orr passing away several years back from cancer- he was a great bassist as well as vocalist- sure the band misses him also. The Cars were an original (& unusual) band that followed the beat of their own drum- leader Ric Ocasek being an example(hard to believe model Paulina Porizkova married him- there's hope for everybody!).
Ric Ocasek got voted one of the most unnatractive men of all time in Blender a couple years back.. However, he's dated nothing but supermodels from the beginning.
Hot damn, that's one great video! This is one of my favorite Cars tunes. LOVE the keyboards in this one! These guys had super talent that was never totally recognized at the time (blame MTV for that one). And Ben is soooooo hot, as usual! I'm sure he's smiling from Heaven............
I love this band and appreciate them ALOT more now than I did back in the day and its so cool to have all these Youtube vids. I'm like a kid in a toy store!!!
Ben died from Pancreatic Cancer, oct of 2000 I believe, he was doing shows up until a few months of his death. this is my fovorite song from this album, always with a passion in his voice
After diagnosis of cancer + hospitalizing, Ben decided to continue concert until the end. He gathered his last strength and did his concert until 6 days before his death...
I almost passed it up thinking it was one of the Cars 'lesser' tunes ... everyone is so in the pocket here and Ben Orr's voice is astounding .. God, what an amazing band the Cars were!
I cant wait for Joe and I to get this biography out theres so much you kids don't know about Ben...He was a star long before the Cars. It definatly was NOT all about Ric, Not this time. Great video its one of my favorites! We miss you Ben!
Go to my page (in tribute for Ben Orr)...you can contact CandyO and his official page of fans...they are writing his biography together with Joe Miliken. We miss him very much !
ric ocasek once said he did not need the other guys he could play all the instruments himself kinda gives you insight on why they broke up and he went solo
They all made solo albums, it's just that music styles were different - that's probably why they broke up in 1988... But i SO wish that they would've had 1988 album too! ;)
ric and ben were together since the 60's , do you really think the after all that time that ric was the only real talent? no fucking way! Ben had a lot more to do with that band and that sound than anyone.
I played in bands at the same time these guys did, we we international at best and I never payed attention to these guys. They are so fucking cool its amazeing. Ben is clearly the star here.
Right on, Salee . . . Yes, everything you read about Ben Orr is that he was a true gentleman and I believe it!!! All of his interviews are cordial, personable, and they leave one wishing they would go on for days. I think Ben is one of the most missed musicians and people (for that matter) in history, and I TRULY believe that Ric Ocasek would drink to that...Listen to his song "Silver" . . . says it all!!
it's a shame a band like this today would never get any airplay...they would have to try utube because commercial radio has been a huge cluster fuck for the past 10+ years.
does anyone else think this is one of there best live performances?? Im disgusted i havent herd this song before!!

not only is Ben's voice super cool on this tune, but his bass playing here is driving the song rythmically. He's hitting the hell out of those notes.

Best band ever ever!!! The power of Ric and Ben together is just STUNNING. This video shows it, not to mention the rest of The CARS!

Is this the only time that Ben and Ric shared vocals? Asking.
They should've done it more often........

I went to this show, It was awesome! I think
it was Living Colour that opened the show.
I have the ticket stub and it does not say.
The Cars never spoke to the crowd until Rick
finally said Hello or Thankyou Houston. Then everyone went crazy! Great Band!

After diagnosis of cancer + hospitalizing, Ben decided to continue concert until the end. He gathered his last strength and did his concert until 6 days before his death...

Fantastic voice! Ric was so ugly...ok voice. Without Ben...The Cars wouldn't have made it as far as they did! R.I.P. Dear Sweet Benjamin :(

This is such a rocking version of this song!!
I almost passed it up thinking it was one of the Cars 'lesser' tunes ... everyone is so in the pocket here and Ben Orr's voice is astounding .. God, what an amazing band the Cars were!

ric ocasek once said he did not need the other guys he could play all the instruments himself kinda gives you insight on why they broke up and he went solo
horseboyken 4 years ago 3
They all made solo albums, it's just that music styles were different - that's probably why they broke up in 1988... But i SO wish that they would've had 1988 album too! ;)

THANK YOU. guy was extraordinary talent. but a total jerkoff

with heartbeatcity Ben was clearly becoming the star of the band and Ric could not deal with it!
theneen32 4 years ago
ric and ben were together since the 60's , do you really think the after all that time that ric was the only real talent? no fucking way! Ben had a lot more to do with that band and that sound than anyone.
theneen32 4 years ago
I played in bands at the same time these guys did, we we international at best and I never payed attention to these guys. They are so fucking cool its amazeing. Ben is clearly the star here.

Right on, Salee . . . Yes, everything you read about Ben Orr is that he was a true gentleman and I believe it!!! All of his interviews are cordial, personable, and they leave one wishing they would go on for days. I think Ben is one of the most missed musicians and people (for that matter) in history, and I TRULY believe that Ric Ocasek would drink to that...Listen to his song "Silver" . . . says it all!!
wuchadoin 4 years ago 4
it's a shame a band like this today would never get any airplay...they would have to try utube because commercial radio has been a huge cluster fuck for the past 10+ years.
