ha ha, i love 2:50 (guitar guy chewing his bubble gum & blowing bubbles-)-(too funny). ...i haven't heard of this group before, but i do like the feel of the band, as well as the female vocals. ...i'm a songwriter/ singer/ guitar-girl myself, so i'm always looking for musicians who inspire me to become better.
Had never heard of the band before i heard Lakes of Canada which thought was great. But then i started listening to the old stuff, like the umbrella-album. Wow. Loved it. Just like i love The Sundays.
Even she has a pretty voice now, I'll never never never stop loving her old voice! It sounded like a strong-willed teen girl singing out her feelings to the world.
There were great then and they are great now...people change, bands change...but Karen's voice will probably always be that pristine gorgeous instrument it was. Aside from The Sundays and the Cocteau Twins, there are none like her. Well said, Panzer. I wish I knew them...just so I could tell them how much their music means to me.
These people are my family---and there are amazing songs on all their albums--styles and preferences change. Their "state' is fine. Umbrella is a good album though.
Why does she look like a homeless person? I know it's not a fashion show but she could have at least fixed her hair. Anyway, beautiful voice. Talented group. She sounds better if I don't have to look at her.
I wish Karen would belt a song out again like this. I've given up on the current state of the band. Every album is nothing but whispered, lightly played, barely audible songs. Even though they're quality tunes, the presentation has gotten very old for me. Can't beat those first two albums, especially Umbrella.
Sarah's music is boring, yes, but I also think her vocals are bland and thin. Karen Perin and Harriet Wheeler have a much, much, more prettier vocals.
I also think the Innocent Mission needs to spice things up a bit and move away from the sleepy music they've been doing for nearly 10 years now.
@postingoldtapes i agree with Mclachlan but Natalie Merchant has done nothing but amazing shit since her first solo album! But yeah, The Innocence Mission's first album is so fierce it was never topped.
These people are my family---and there are amazing songs on all their albums--styles and preferences change. Their "state' is fine. Umbrella is a good album though.
@Dissmusic These people are my family---and there are amazing songs on all their albums--styles and preferences change. Their "state' is fine. Umbrella is a good album though.
@Dissmusic I agree about the inaudible qualities in these 3 named wonderful, astonishingly good singers (Karen, Sarah, Natalie). Nice ranges, but going too whispery is always problematic for listeners, and I have a slight deficiency in one ear so it's frustrating.
@Dissmusic I respectfully disagree. I have been following Karen Peris since day one and I love her more mature, pensive sound. I like IM better now than in the beginning. Peace.
@runly1 To each their own, definitely. But for me, it's just too much of the same "vibe" on every ... single ... song. I don't think "mature" has to equate to "sedate." It has nothing to do with them using effects pedals, etc. Their stark acoustic stuff can be awesome. "Lakes of Canada" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Their earlier stuff just energized me, lifted me up. The way Karen did background vocals, for example, was really incredible and unique.....(more)
@runly1 .... (Part 2). One groggy campfire song after another does not make for a good album to MY ears. An emotional range can be a good thing on an album. There's nothing joyous on these releases anymore to me. At times I feel like the John Belushi character in Animal House who just wants to grab the guitar and smash it. Again, to each their own. They will always have my respect. Just probably not my money anymore.
@Dissmusic Totally agree! I love the mellow tunes, but miss a little edge. Their 2010 album is really good, but I still go back to the earlier albums because of the production.
@Dissmusic The old stuff, as well as their newer more-sedate stuff, all has it's place. "Small Planes" is my favorite of the bunch, which almost sounds like a transitional of styles.
@Dissmusic I guess Im not surprised seeing as how you go by the name Dissmusic. some of us get pleasure from enjoying music, and i guess some of us get pleasure from dissing music. so yea to each his own. Have an angry day!
@quinsedlethorpid First off, "Dissmusic" has nothing to do with "dissing" music. It has to do with a band called "The Dissidents." I love music, and I'm passionate about it. I offered an opinion about something in a respectful way. Over and over I said the IM will always have my respect, I just wish they'd put a little edge back into some of their music. Why that offends you is beyond me. In the end, they need to do what makes them happy, obviously. It seems like the only angry one here is you.
@Dissmusic Well maybe you have gotten very old - change is a good thing go with it! I love the older songs and love the new songs. Things and people that stay the same are boring!
@rboutside "Things and people that stay the same are boring!" Exactly. Which is why I find the Innocence Mission boring these days. To my ears, they've been making the same album for well over a decade. Ironically, I'M the guy who wants change, you want them to stay the same. In the end, though, what THEY want is all that matters. But still, just wanted to point out your failing logic.
I first heard of InnMish in 1995 when a local radio station in Detroit began playing "Bright as Yellow." I had no idea they had been around as long as they have, kind of makes me wonder how old these people are now?
The way you phrase that ("would be") makes it sound as if they aren't around anymore. They are, still recording albums and touring. I saw them at Schubas in Chicago a couple of years ago. They have a new EP, and released a full-length album in 2006.
So please, just because radio and record companies aren't interested in their music any more, that doesn't mean they are defunct. Musicians, *real* musicians, make music and continue to do so no matter what.
It's rude and inaccurate to call this sound "a bad U2 covers band", though there's some similarity to U2's best. Be glad Karen Peris has an infinitely better voice and no affectation like Bono. Otherwise, I think this energetic early IM song is thrilling to see and hear. Karen looks gorgeous, too. I like much of their moody, achingly beautiful songs of the middle period but would enjoy a rave-up like this occasionally too.
It was a sign of the times. If you want to hear something REALLY shocking, check out the stuff Matthew Sweet released during these years. He had the same mentality, believe it or not.
I live here in Lancaster,Pa, home of IM. I was introduced to them in 1989 or 90 while living in South Carolina. They were in heavy rotation on a syndicated radio network called The Breeze.
I love the first album. Great songs, well produced. But as they stripped down the genius became even more obvious. "Birds of My Neighborhood" is a masterpiece and the critical acclaim that greeted that CD was impressive. At least a few critics had it on their top 10 for the year.
Yes that's good old Will Lee of the "World's Most Dangerous Band" as it was known back then when Dave was on NBC. He's always had a cool guy persona so it was especially nice to see him rocking out with the not-so-masculine IM :)
Larry Klein (at the time Joni Mitchell's husband) produced this and the next album as well. Got the best out of them, and certainly the most variety. For something that sad and
This really makes me miss the more upbeat songs from this great band. I've really grown bored with their constant churning out of dirges and lullabies over the last several years. It's good stuff, but it's just the same sleepy feel, over and over. This reminds me of why I started liking them. They had an anthemic quality. Look at that, Karen is even MOVING AROUND here. Wish they'd put out something with this energy again.
I sort of feel the same way. Their new stuff is beautiful, and I will always love them, but high production values cost money, and they don't seem to get much support. They are just so humble.
True, Dissmusic, that I.M.'s sound has evolved and become more "accoustic."
I think they reached a good balance on the 1995 "Glow" CD.
I appreciate Larry Klein for initially rockifyin' the sound, (I thought of that sound as Cocteau Twins meets the Sundays,) thus getting them airplay and publicity on the first two LPs. But Dennis Herring helped them strip off a layer of production, particularly heavy keyboards, and it revitalized them.
They were rocking before Larry Klein. They changed quite a bit from 1986-1989. There were evolving from a pop rock cover band to an alternative victorian rock. I like that term victorian which I heard a writer describing them with years ago.
Look up the band on google. They are still around. The bass player was simply the bassist for the TV show (unmentionable here), Mr. Will Lee, studio bassist extrordinaire.
Wow. I was working in a D.C. club before this album came out and saw them open for some forgottenband. There were like five peopl einthe audience. She was amazing.
their first two albums, "innocence mission" and "umbrella", were produced by larry klein, who was married to joni mitchell at the time. the albums of hers which they co-produced also have this great, rich sound.
the innocence mission was a fantastic group; "umbrella" is on my top ten "desert island" album list. unfortunatly, they were overshadowed by 10,000 maniacs who became popular the year before.
THIS TAKES ME BACK TO WHEN I REALLY LOVED MUSIC AND THERE WAS GREAT MUSIC TO LOVE. I REMEMBER RECORDING 120 MINUTES AND THE MUSICAL ACTS ON THE LATE NIGHT SHOWS. I STILL OWN THIS CASSETTE. I MISS THE 80s\90s ALTERNATIVE SCENE ALTHOUGH THERE IS "SOME" GOOD MUSIC (REAL SINGERS FRONTING A REAL BANDS) OUT THERE. I'M JUST HAPPY TO HAVE BEEN THERE. R.E.T. EASTPOINTE,MI USA
What year was this from? Cool to see them so long ago. I didn't come across IM until Birds of My Neighborhood, one of my favorite albums of all time. Did they not have a permanent bassist and drummer at this stage in their career?
Harris, this song came out on their first album in 1989. You might want to work your way backwards, from Glow to Umbrella to (self titled). Steve Brown drummed and Mike Bitts played bass. Don't know why they aren't here, but sometimes musicians are blended with house musicians in these situations.
That must be Don behnd Karin -- wow, young, both of them. I'd lost them for these past twenty years, but thanks to the 'net they're one of my favorites AGAIN. Still unbelievable.
I only know IMs most recent work so this came as such a surprise to me! What is this 80s? Karen's voice seemed more powerful here. A world away from her delicate butterfly vocals now. I adore their latest album...
Thank u for posting this magnificent song. I didn't think it could be carried off live, but bloody 'ell, did they manage it brilliantly or what! And yes, she must be close to being the best female vocalist I've heard, her voice is ethereal.
I remember seeing them on this show! I loved the song, loved her voice, and went out and bought the record. Yes, the big thing that Da--er, the host held up. Ah, thanks, nice to see it again.
Oh, my gosh! Thank you for posting this! I can remember the 1st time I heard them sing this - at Temple U, Karen Peris was standing so close I could smell her beautiful hair... and when she started singing, I was so overcome with amazement, I thought I was hearing an angel... truly magical - as is this vid. MUCHO thanks!
This group is true american music at its best. I have most of their stuff, powerful, life affirming...just inspiring. When you get the chance please read some of her lyrics from any album...on point with being a human being beautiful
This is one of those rare artists that can move me to the point of tears! This song especially! They are awesome in the studio AND live!! I wish they'd come over to Miami sometime!
Watching this has made me very, very happy! I'm a particular fan of the IM's forst two albums, so this is a particular treasure. This footage is a dream come true to watch! Amazing!
Wow! Thank YOU, PostingOT! I'd never seen this before. Although it's that production style they don't use anymore, I got a real kick out of seeing a confident, assertive, energized KP. Looks like some of the guys in the house band were mixed in, but it was tight. Just makes me want to see them live all the more. Fan-freakin'-tastic!

I love seeing Innocence Mission live back before they were sign playing the clubs in Philadelphia area.

I was lucky enough to see them live in San Juan Capistrano, sometime in 1995 I think. They were awesome-- that voice is unreal live.

That must be Don behnd Karin -- wow, young, both of them. I'd lost them for these past twenty years, but thanks to the 'net they're one of my favorites AGAIN. Still unbelievable.

Keithabbot said: L******** had a thing about using their own bassist and drummer I guess.
Please don't mention the name of the show or the host. Thanks.

I only know IMs most recent work so this came as such a surprise to me! What is this 80s? Karen's voice seemed more powerful here. A world away from her delicate butterfly vocals now. I adore their latest album...

Wow! I never saw this. I LOVE this album, even today. Thanks for a great post!

My favorite post-1975 band...always preferred their harder-edged songs (like this one).

Incredible, I never knew they sounded this good live. Most groups dont sound half as good on a small studio stage like that.
