  • sounds nice man hey got a question. Did you notice any diference in performance with the edelbrock intake manifold and carb? im thinking of doing the same setup on my monte carlo

  • @1979corvette1 on the poor old 305 I noticed a huge difference. The original cast iron manifold and 2 bbl carb was in a bad way. Most of the emissions systems were broken and the engine was full of sludge. In the process of swapping the manifold I fixed all that. The engine ran a lot better and the sound of the 4barrels opening up was REAL sweet.

  • @localdu Exhaust exits your engine from several ports. Headers bring all these sources together into one (or two) locations. Normally they are attached to long pipes, converters and mufflers and sent behind your car. "open" headers have no pipes attached. It's a lot like setting off a few little bombs every second and attaching little megaphones to them. I hope this explanation helps!

    headers with a good muffler like flowmaster is plenty for me,

    anyway open headers would get you a ticket the first cop that sees (hears) you.

  • My Camaro sounds exactly like that but its a 350 with edelbrock carb and intake and headers and flowmasters. Sounds great.

  • I used to have a '68 Ranchero with a fresh 289 and basic bolt-ons. Before I put the Flowmasters on it, it had open headers, 1 5/8 primaries and 3" collectors. I dont know if anyone else here has noticed, but SBF's are louder than other comparable v8s with open headers. I would blaze some bud in the garage, then fire up that 289, stoned as hell, at midnight, and basque in that blissful sound. Slowly increasing the rpm to bout 5k or so...

  • ...I nearly blew my friends eardrums when he bent down to look at the flames emitting from the headers. I closed the throttle, and he thought it was quiet, only to have me blip it wide open again. Fuckin' A it was loud! And the neighbors never complained!

    Sure.

    For the same money will a 350 make more? you bet.

    It's why I went with a 350 - a couple years after I posted this video.

  • your wrong the 305 has the same stroke and crank as the 350. The differences is in the restrictive heads, weak cam, and restricted intake manifold. Heads, cam and manifold and you can make as much power as with a 350. 45 cubic inches does not make a big differnce espeacially when you raise the stroke.

  • why would you even waste your money on the worst engine gm ever made. put a 327, 350, hell even a 283 would be better than that. im not trying to sound like a smart ass or anything, because it is a nice looking and sounding car, but is is a waste to put any money into a 305

  • I give you credit for your enthusiasm, but your car doesn't sound that great. As someone else stated, you don't have enough compression and it just kinda bogs down.

  • he's got a point a 305 in a dead motor go get your self a 350 or 400 how ever 400 tend to over heat because of the thin cylinder walls, if you get a 350 no one can tell its not a 305 ot you wanna say you have the origanal engine

  • This is awesome! My mom's car is a 1984 Chevy Caprice Classic, with the original 5.0 305, and kinda original tranny (Got a couple Corvette parts, ZL1 parts, Z28 parts) and it kinda sounds pretty cool. I never heard it through open headers though.

  • yea when you first started that up i thought you drop a cylinder but its alright what you need is some better piston make it sound mean but your getting there and the guy who said 305's can beat 350's ah are you high or just dumb no stock 305 can beat a 350.

  • with the third gen camaros the fastest cars were the tpi 305's. the reason was because the 350 tpi only came with an auto the 305 tpi (which is only 10 hp less) could come with a t5 tranny. In the third gens, the 305 tpi with a t5 was the fastest normal package you could get. the firebird formulas and some of the iroc z's came that way.

  • im not going to knock you for restoring your car...but why would you want a restore a 79? to me its like restoring a jetta id go for a 67-73 or a newer one.but its still a nice car and a nice sound just put a big block instead of replacing the valves when they go

  • R6guy207 -- I think the later second generation Camaros (up to '81) are beginning to attract collectors. I think the '82-'92s will follow. The GM G-body cars (Cutlass Supreme 442, Monte Carlo SS, Gran Prix 2+2) are appreciating in value as well.

  • i have a 79 camaro as well, and dont listen to these these morons there is no vacuum leak man, as you know after 3 minutes of warm up it sounds fine, mine has a 350 though with a 650 holley double pumper carb..

  • yeah man i have a 84 camaro 305 with headers corks and give it a couple minutes to warm up and it will just spin for about 5 blocks.

  • Nice. I have a f150 i dropped a BOSS351 engine(had it casted... impossible to get an original) in it with the 71 Windsor intake and the Cobra-Jet rods in it. Edelbrock 1000CFM 4v carb and some ceramic headers (open).

    Its smooth sounding and really loud (been ticketed twice)

  • Fascinating, but isn't a boss 351 a Cleveland block and not a windsor? Quite a differencve in girth there! Also, it was the heads that made the boss 351 different, moreso than the block. Its an ordinary Cleveland block....there are still quite a few out there...
