Uh COD4 isn't that intense a game, many comps can max it. Trust me an Alienware would smoke your computer when it comes to gaming, those things have nvidia 260m and state of the art ATI cards running crossfire technology, theres absolutely no competition between alienware and mac for gaming. Generally though Alienwares are over priced, too flashy, and low quality. Also you're probably getting poor frame rates when you max COD. Benchmark and tell me what you get, I doubt it's over 30 FPS.
Honestly you'd have to define smoothly, I don't own this notebook, but I've used it and I've seen benchmarks. You'll be playing COD4 GTA4 and Crysis, but don't expect great framerates or high settings. You can play Crysis warhead well on low, probably with framerates in the 40s I don't know. COD4 will run great, maybe even high graphics settings but don't get your hopes up, GTA4, I don't know
I love mac, if you have a lot of money to spend then buy one, but at least buy a macbook pro with the 9600m GT. It's not a great card, but it's pretty good and at least not integrated. You could buy an iMac they now have very nice ATI video cards.

Would you like me to list half the innovations Apple and other companies created? It'd be several thousand times longer than Microsoft's that's for sure. All Microsoft did was make good business decisions and buy out / replicate the work of other, and in doing so created a global empire.
Apple is a great company, but Microsoft made much smarter moves and got ahead, plus there operating system is more organized and better for business. It's also in my opinion better because it's way way more compatible because they made the great decision to create software that other companies computers can use. Besides apple hasn't made any real innovations in the computer world recently. Having read Steve Jobs biography, I think he's done a lot, but he's made some stupid moves.

Look, games on mac are total crap, there often cheap emulators and they're sluggish in performance. I know some people port them, thats an exception, the average person can't write ports. Even if macs ran games well there far to underpowered to do a good job. Look, most mac games are crap. I own a Mac, I like it, I've tried to game on it, it sucks. I couldn't stand it, the frame rates are worse and updates came out really really late. Some popular games are ported to Mac, but most are not and if they are they're poorly supported. Windows is better for gaming, it's really not up for debate.
I've been a mac user for 10 years, the frame rates are perfectly fine on my new 13'' MacBook Pro, the NVIDIA 9400M really accelerates everything along nicely. Sims 3 works terrific
The 9400m is a bad card for gamers. The sims is really low system req so obviously it runs fine. Try playing new games like Grand theft auto four and Crysis. Oh wait, they were never put on mac along with all the most popular games of all time such as, Counter Strike Source, half life 2, etc. Face it, Macs aren't good for gaming.
I ma running GTA San Andreas, on my macBook Pro, and after seeing a video of how good the 2.26Ghz basic mbp worked with GTA IV i'm sure it will work good on my 2.53Ghz model with 8GB RAM :P, the basic macbook can also run Crysis don't you know anything look at youtube videos

crys-ass and half-life 2 years old are only popular cause they use MICROSOFT'S DIRECT X 10...thats why games that are ported from consoles...Gay-lo (Halo) were only put on Windows because of licensing...if Microsoft's DX 10 were out of the picture..every game would play on EVERY OS out there...mac, linux, ect.
Thats not true, most games like Crysis use DX-9 anyway. Besides the Mac Books don't play games well because the 9400m is not a good video card for gaming.

You absolutely do not get what you pay for in a Mac when it comes to performance and OS. Don't let Steve fool you, the 9400m is crap if you want to game. Mine has never crashed in the many years I've owned it. I actually know how to take care of it. I keep it clean of viruses, I disable unwanted startup processes, turn off unwanted services, keep my drivers up to date, etc. It's not that hard, I know what I'm doing so everything works and I get a more powerful easier to use OS. Yes, I'm talking about windows. Mac does it all for you, but they make it hard to do it yourself if you want to. Windows makes it easy, but you must know what your doing.

consider the mainstream 9600m has 32. consider the 9800m has 96. i consider having a 9600m as bare minimum for notebook. 9400 is absolute shit, but then again im used to very high hardware standards cause im a gamer.
My 9600 moves 300 Gigaflops neglecting the fact that it's overclocked.
I've watched several of the presentations by Steve Jobs and all of the information is useless without being compared to something modern. No one that watches his presentation would have a clue what a Gigaflop is and if 54 is good, although it sounds good. Yet they glitter it up and make it seem like it's impressive. Sure it's a hell of a lot better than the previous mac but mac has been behind PC makers since day 1.

How far can I "safely" overclock the 9400 GPU in the macbook. I plan on doing this for 2 hours max a day and I already got a laptop cooler stand. Any help relating the limits.
I highly recommend you don't overclock. It has heating problems as it is, so don't try. Please. (I own a macbook and it burns when its running hard even if it is not overclocked).

Ok maybe on that one I was bending the truth slightly- will NOT accept is not true, mainly for convenience many do not WANT to accept it seeing as they will have to convert the file, and through that losses can occur with the content. For an example, with Adobe After Effects Pro CS4 there are different effect filters, and some are not OS interchangeable. For that reason sharing Mac-only compatible files makes the transition between different file owners much easier.
Im not to worried on the exaggeration, but do macs really create file types for which there are no [adaquate] codecs for WMP/VLC/winamp, or any of the other mainstream media players? Sounds odd to me, never heard of such files.
And i think any conversion can be made lossless, unless you convert to a lossy file. But it can take a few annoying minutes to alot of hours, so i see the problem.
noooo don't worry its not that drastic- basically it's because we use Adobe CS4 Masters there is are so many different applications in it and almost all use custom add-ons that dev's simply can;t be bothered to make available for both OS's. The end result is always universally playable, it's just i work with the semi built files not the compiled and compressed finished

if you watch, they put the sony vaio on higher settings than the mac, look around the edge of the screen on the vaio, it has the little tunnel vision effect and better light settings than the macs settings.

guys..........apple is not claiming to have better graphics than any other computer. they are simply stating that its the best graphics that mac has had in a portable perspective. this is a business computer, mainly meant for business related tasks. there really shouldn't ever be a consern over how much faster or better a chip is compared to the PRO graphics used in computers such as alienware. everyone knows they're almost the best in the business.

the failure of the last gen chips had nothing to do with the individual vendors, it was to do with the manufacturer of the chips (nvidia) and their overconfident position in the market. i experienced this myself, and monitored the temp of the chip. 60C isnt hot at all for an nvidia chip, and it shouldnt break so easily.

God your fucking stupid. Know the difference between a discrete card and an integrated GPU. For an integrated GPU, it's the best and it keeps the low profile build of the macbook pro. If I wanted to carry around a 8 pound beast that's just as thick as a phone book, I'l go buy an alienware.
The Macbook pro has, at base stat, a much faster processor, a 9400m and 9600m gt in the same machine, much faster ram, more ram, a larger hd, a faster fsb, thn the m17x. Yet, it has a smaller screen and stuff to balance things out.
much faster ram? they both start with 4gb of 1066 ddr3 ram at base, so please cut the bullshit. and the m17x, can have 1333 ddr3 ram for the same price as the 17 inch mbp. apples overpriced, still good computers, but even more overpriced than grossly overpriced alienwares.

You absolutely do not get what you pay for in a Mac when it comes to performance and OS. Don't let Steve fool you, the 9400m is crap if you want to game. I'm buying a notebook that have the nvidia 260m GTX in it and it's $1,400 This card is infinitely better than the 9400! Also my PC never crashes! Hate to say it, but the only reason PC's crash is because the owner doesn't know how to take care of it. With mac you can't do anything cause it's done for you. w/ PC you have to know what your doing.

Mine has never crashed in the many years I've owned it. I actually know how to take care of it. I keep it clean of viruses, I disable unwanted startup processes, turn off unwanted services, keep my drivers up to date, etc. It's not that hard, I know what I'm doing so everything works and I get a more powerful easier to use OS. Yes, I'm talking about windows. Mac does it all for you, but they make it hard to do it yourself if you want to. Windows makes it easy, but you must know what your doing.

My 9600 moves 300 Gigaflops neglecting the fact that it's overclocked.
I've watched several of the presentations by Steve Jobs and all of the information is useless without being compared to something modern. No one that watches his presentation would have a clue what a Gigaflop is and if 54 is good, although it sounds good. Yet they glitter it up and make it seem like it's impressive. Sure it's a hell of a lot better than the previous mac but mac has been behind PC makers since day 1.

ah, touche... But without reference it is still an almost useless term whether their programmers or fanboys in a apple store. Especially since graphics cards aren't commonly speed rated in flops.
FYI if you look on apple website it describes WWDC as "5 days, 1000 apple engineers, 5000 of your peers" not counting who watches on youtube. So that's a 1:4 ratio of people that know what he's talking about. It also explains it's meant to teach developing methods to learning individuals.

It costs up to $499 just for the complete set of session videos.
ADC Premier Membership costs $3499 and includes a ticket to wwdc.
In order to get into the convention, you have to agree to a confidentiality agreement and Apple is STRICT about that kind of stuff.
When they speak of Peers, they are talking about developers. The 1000 engineers work for Apple and are there to interface with the attendees. Did you ever watch a WWDC keynote at all?

i dunno, aniway that model of sony vaio, mount exactely the same hardware of the old macbook, so its not completely wrong to make a comparison, i dunno about the os that vaio run, if is 32 or 64 bit, cuz osx is 64bit, so for true compare, thay should put 64bit of windows..that macbook anyway cost 1100$ with a led monitor, multitouch trackpad, and motion sensor, is not too overpriced..as before.. of course alienware run better, depends on what you need,13" is a very good size for notebook

I highly recommend you don't overclock. It has heating problems as it is, so don't try. Please. (I own a macbook and it burns when its running hard even if it is not overclocked).

For starters, I own an advertising agency, & my company uses 80% macs- some of our partners will no longer accept any windows format; APPLE IS INDUSTRY STANDARD
Also, if you buy a macbook its usually for the mix of cpu power and clean interface that Leopard offers to its users. The graphics card is used to power the graphic parts of OSX
Install windows + suddenly the mac covers all windows & mac games
When Snow Leopard comes out, GPU will be used to achieve HUGE performance increases

Ok maybe on that one I was bending the truth slightly- will NOT accept is not true, mainly for convenience many do not WANT to accept it seeing as they will have to convert the file, and through that losses can occur with the content. For an example, with Adobe After Effects Pro CS4 there are different effect filters, and some are not OS interchangeable. For that reason sharing Mac-only compatible files makes the transition between different file owners much easier.

Im not to worried on the exaggeration, but do macs really create file types for which there are no [adaquate] codecs for WMP/VLC/winamp, or any of the other mainstream media players? Sounds odd to me, never heard of such files.
And i think any conversion can be made lossless, unless you convert to a lossy file. But it can take a few annoying minutes to alot of hours, so i see the problem.

noooo don't worry its not that drastic- basically it's because we use Adobe CS4 Masters there is are so many different applications in it and almost all use custom add-ons that dev's simply can;t be bothered to make available for both OS's. The end result is always universally playable, it's just i work with the semi built files not the compiled and compressed finished

Why dont you buy the decent computer *ahem-macbook* and run windows on it dumbo. Anyway, on the LOWEST end Macbook, you get around 30fps in World of Warcraft. On a lowest end Windows, you probably wont run world of warcraft, and even on a medium type computer, (2GB ram, Dual Core CPU etc) you will only get 10-15fps. So... i have just answered you :D

WOW they didn't use the same specs on COD4. I OWN the new macbook pro with 4gb upgraded ram and a 9400m+9600m graphics.
if you watch, they put the sony vaio on higher settings than the mac, look around the edge of the screen on the vaio, it has the little tunnel vision effect and better light settings than the macs settings.
im not bashing mac, because im a proud owner, BUT thats kinda shaddy.

guys..........apple is not claiming to have better graphics than any other computer. they are simply stating that its the best graphics that mac has had in a portable perspective. this is a business computer, mainly meant for business related tasks. there really shouldn't ever be a consern over how much faster or better a chip is compared to the PRO graphics used in computers such as alienware. everyone knows they're almost the best in the business.

its actually shared ram so the vram varies depending on how much is needed, it steal from your 2 gigs
i would say that if you get 4 gigs, the graphics performance of thr 9400 would equal or be better than the x1650

the failure of the last gen chips had nothing to do with the individual vendors, it was to do with the manufacturer of the chips (nvidia) and their overconfident position in the market. i experienced this myself, and monitored the temp of the chip. 60C isnt hot at all for an nvidia chip, and it shouldnt break so easily.
and of course they are going to say that its fixed, they want sales.
