I wonder, did she ever appear on television in the 50s or 60s? Would love to see footage of her from that era. Her voice is still amazingly strong and flexible. I never understood why she was the primary target for Betty Carter's dismissal of white women jazz vocalists.
Yeah I never understood Betty Carter's dismissal of Chris, but even more incredible is Betty's dismissal of Anita O'Day, which is downright ridiculous.
Chris is in good health and would come out again if the situation and performing conditions suited her. I wish sombody, somewhere, would get something going to return this icon to the stage where she belongs, even if but just for one more memorable New York City club date.
She's still around. I spoke to her a few months back. Retired now. Too bad. I'll bet that she could still put the new breed of "jazz" singers to shame! Last Summer Ran Blake of The New England Conservatory, taught a course on the music of Chris Connor.
I saw her at Yoshi's in Oakland in around 1988, compare her version of Blame it on My Youth from the 50's on Bethlehem with the version she did on LP from about 86 -- amazing to hear both
I love Chris Connor too. I got to see her in concert a little over 20 years ago. She was magnifique. One of her best songs is "You're gonna hear from me." I could listen to that over and over all day long.
I have everything Chris has ever recorded, including some remarkable Japanese releases hardly anyone knows about in the U.S. and the splendid Atlantic singles collection "Misty" and it's amazing how she has remained true to her vision more than half a century. Most of her work is available on C.D. and whenever it was recorded it all sounds new! She has never met a song she couldn't sing as if it had never been sung before.
Thanks. I discovered her Mammas modern jazz coffee Shop in Tokyo Japan in 1956. Still number one with me.

Happy memories of hearing vintage Chris Connor on a Utah radio station "Big Band 93, " in 1980, when I first discovered her. I love her, sing on.
