why the hangyoku in this video 山形舞子・小桃さん look so different than these two ones in here? She has the line in her neck, and she has the red collar and correct hair and kimono.. ^^
There is a group of women in the Asakusa district who go by the name of "Furisode-san", who appear to mimic the look and feel of Maiko. Whether they can be called real Geisha or not, is debatable. To become a furisode-san, women have to be between the ages of 18-25 and undergo a training period of three months to learn basic dance and tea ceremony, along with correct application of the make-up and kimono dressing."
@ClaudiaVampiria they are not furisode san two of them are from akasaka not asakusa and the jikata is from shinbashi how to you they are just because your knowledge of kimono and geisha comes from memoirs of geisha book and film and probably some stupid programs about the kyoto hanamachi. i have been living among geisha for more then 15 years and my grand mother is a former geisha these girls are NOT furisode san. what an insult to their dance !
@ClaudiaVampiria hangyokusan are not the same persons as the maiko and geiko of kyoto. the style is different just because the fashion of a certain period was different in kyoto and tokyo. the geisha from kyushu and the ones from osaka or nagasaki are also different from the ones of kyoto and tokyo. it's just a fashion trend npthong else. i mostly know the geisha from pontocho because my grand mother was one of them but i'm a an and half icelandic so not a pro
@MrMichmich1 furisode san, geisha impersonators. They are woman who had short training in certain dances and songs and manners. They are not real geisha, furisode san is just a parttime job.
I does not understand a lot who are these young women.
White-collar worker and knot of the Ob runs = geisha girl, but ornamental in hair, Kimono in the lively colors, with a lot of motive and long sleeves = maikos!
@Fishroads those kimonos are about $13000 each, not to mention their traditional hair ornaments and their instruments. They are handmade silk, I dunno, I think they are beautiful, the colors are unique and eyecatching to me.
@SelestynaArpa364 they arent real geisha, part time geikos, the hairstyles is not the same as the geishas of asakusa, gion or miyagawa, and the kimonos looks very cheap to me
@Fishroads yeah I realized they weren't geishas after reading some of the other comments oops... ^.^ oh well. I completely respect your opinion, but I must say thats a beautiful purple. :)
Mostly, you can tell frmo their obi, which is not tied in either the maiko or geiko stylings. Their hair is done as elaborately as a minarai's, but they are not wearing a very red collar, and still have a full red lip. Also, one is not abl to notice the forked prong at the nape of the neck. The kimono is not properly opened, just a bit, at the front. Maiko and junior geiko wear their kimono a bit looser.
These are the furisode-san girls, though that doesn't deter from their skill.
@papillonxchocolat how western ! you judge a person by her clothing and her make up before the level of her artistry. these two girls are amazing dancers, i can tell you have never seen furisode san performing ! that7s quite insulting for these two hangyoku san and the jiikata to beleive they are just mere dancers. learn art before basing your judgement on appearence alone .
@papillonxchocolat That's not true. Kyoto is not the only place with geisha, and each place has its own traditions. Their obi is tied in the style of the hangyoku, the name for apprentice geisha in Tokyo. These are real geisha apprentices.
@papillonxchocolat they are not furisode san they are geisha from the akasaka district in tokyo and the jiikata is from the shimbashi district of tokyo stop saying you know who is who i personally know these girls
geisha are extremely admirable and furisode san are still admirable too. idk why everybody disses furisode san just bcz they r not geisha. they still dance beautifully. good work girls.
Basically they are like part-time Geisha if you want a basic explanation. They basically usually are either housewives or have some other job while part-time they dance and sing in traditional Japanese parties.
I am not very fond of them. One thing they aren't as graceful as Geisha and second their kimono and fans are way too flashy, it almost comes off tacky.

@lukkha1I have studied japanese culture for 5 years now, I am sorry but I dont know much about Hangyokusan, only Maikosan of Kyoto.
I didnt sat these are furisode san I just told those people what is a furisodesan.
I am really sorry, I dont really know much about Tokyo Geisha.
(I havent seen memoirs of a geisha, it is all lie, it tells that geisha sell sex, instead I read the real version Geisha a life.)
Why hangyokusan dont have the lines in their neck? And why their harstyle is that?

Dear AndyChuang1211,
Geiko14 is absolutely right. Even with traditional music and dances they still are only furisode-san.
Furisode-san perform in ochayas like real maiko or geiko but they can be seen mostly in Tokyo.

Furisode-san, not geisha. They can be found in Tokyo.

oh cool thank you for explaining (^-^)
geiko14 3 years ago
well they dont look like actual geiko from kyoto maybe they are from somewhere else? do you know?
geiko14 3 years ago
There was a KAGAI in the Japanese whole country in old times.
It remains still a little in various places.
I think that these maikoes are maiko in the Soumarou in Yamagata Prefecture
Sakata City.
There are maikoes in Yamagata City and Sakata City in Yamagata Prefecture.
To leave the tradition art in various places, the geisha and the maiko are
preserved.

This is Japanese Geisha's dance and music.
