  • What an incredible double tongue!!!!

  • Prokofievvvvvvvvvvv :) favourite excerpt.

  • I go to ASU and have seen him play and talk to him, and trust me, it's just the camera quality.

  • Reading some of these comments has made me dumber.

    God bless the internet.

  • inspiring video

  • The man wrote a freaking book dedicated to the advancement of brass fundamentals (especially tone). I think he knows what he is doing. Plus, he has been teaching and performing longer than the average college student has been alive.

  • it's the shitty mic in the camera folks, man is an absolute monster of a player with a gorgeous tone, and well you can at least hear his technical ability and range on this crappy recording. Just a ridiculous player, and had influenced countless brass players.

  • Is it an YFB-822?

  • @tigerreydelaselva It's a Jupiter CC

  • Is it an YFB-822?

  • Why are there so many negative comments toward Sam Pilafian...? Let's hear you play better/teach better. Look the guy up.

  • plus this camera sucks. if it was recorded on a real sound camera it would be amazing

  • If you're saying Sam isn't worth listening to, you're out of your mind. This is him checking stuff out. He's an amazing player with gorgeous sound and technique. Yeah Pat Sheridan is just as amazing, but it's like saying you're a ford or chevy guy. Better to say these two guys are great.

  • dont think so....sorry. Most tuba players don't spend much time on their tone. They should because, in general, tubas don't lend themselves to a pretty sound to begin with. Most tubas are just too bright and blatty and that's why most people don't like to listen to them. That's just the way it is. Now I'm in no way he's not a good guy or a good teacher. I'm just saying that there is a very short list of tuba players I'd pay to listen to, and he's just not on that list. Sheridan I would........

  • @deepwaters6969 Are you basing that off of this video or have you heard any of his cd's? You do have a right to an opinion and it's fine either way but this is a really shitty recording. I get to hear him play every morning and he always sounds amazing. But anyways, you cannot go wrong with Sheridan though, great guy and great player.

  • @deepwaters6969 Sir you are wrong not all tuba players are bright and "blatty", those who are are normally begginers (1-7 weeks) are. I've been playing tuba for about 5 years. Not all tuba players play like that, almost all of the 17 tuba players i know play with a dark, warm sound. If you think tuba players don't spend a lot of time of tone you're dead wrong. We MUST spend time on tone because of the nature of the instrument and because it's brass. I spend about 7-8 hrs a week on pure tone.

  • maybe its the recording...........but his tone SUCKS! sounds jus like every other blatty tuba lurking around .................yuck.................sorry

Oh yeah, Im a tuba player btw

  • @deepwaters6969 yeah its the recording. hearing sam or pat live is, well..... rediculous. it makes me feel worse about my tuba playing lol.

  • @deepwaters6969

it's the video. he's an amazing player. if he had a blatty tone, then neither of us would know he existed. get it together man. dumb comment.

  • Very lucky to have this gentleman as my professor

  • Very Inspiring ! ...

  • Very Inspiring ! ...

  • Very Inspiring ! ...

  • Very inspiring ! ...

  • Haha 1:51 Tuba shredding!

  • That's how to put a tuba through its paces........obviously a great tubist. Sam Pilafian.....of course!

  • same tuba i play on

  • Perro lo que queda de pilafian!!!!!...esta mas viejo que domingo maza zabala el que era presidente del bcv!!!!....mas viejo que rafael caldera!!!...eso es lo malo de la musica, hace que uno envejezca muy rapido!!

  • Detected: Wagner, Strauss, Gershwin, and sweet georgia brown..and music for the tuba stratosphere

  • im going to play the tuba next year!!! i cant wait!!! :D

    :D

  • he handles a tuba like a great lover handles a woman. Great lips!

  • What tuba is it?

    is an F-TUBA?

    what model and manufacturer?

  • @tigerreydelaselva no. it's a C tuba. C's look like a BBflat tuba but the tubs are different. it is the Jupiter C tuba. very much like the Bflat model they have.

  • that is Jupiter 584 CC tuba

  • I bow to him....for he is amazing

  • And at 3:13 he does beautiful sounds. These things really work. I wish the audio was a little better.

  • 1:50 he goes into Brumm from Brass Gym. Cool. I wish I could sound like that!

  • Who's better,

    this dude or Patrick Sheridan?

I saw this two dudes at the CBDA convention

  • They're about the same. They are just at a level of talent where its near impossible to determine whose better.

  • I shook this guys hand yesterday =D It was like being touched by Jesus reincarnated as a tuba player!

  • Could you hear how he started resonating the low tones better as he warmed up to the reworked horn? searching for that sweet spot.

I busk a tuba for a living and enjoy listening to this guy fart around more than a regular composition.Interesting how he's streching it out , testing it's limits like a test pilot.

  • Is this a CC?

  • yessir, its a jupiter that he helped design

  • Yeah, its a jupiter CC tuba

  • Keep on truckin Sam!

  • I got to try out his most recently finished Jupiter with the faded finish at the CBDA convention in the Saroyan. It plays so well, the fifth valve is incredibly convenient =)

  • That is Sam Pilafian, one of the bes living tubists alive.

  • Comment removed

  • i got to play his horn at the tmea convention- i don't know if it was this one- but he was playing the other one like all day- this guy is amazing!

  • This guy is gifted!!!!!!!! He knows what he is doin.... I am tubist and I could learn alot from him!!!!!!!!

  • AWESOME!

  • is that the 548L?

  • Seeing him on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood got me hooked on the tuba. I picked it up in seventh grade and I have strived to imitate his sound ever since. If imitation is the highest form of complement, then my regards to Sam.

I studied with one of his students, Dr. Rick Good, while I was in undergrad at Auburn.

  • yea i was able to train under one of his students as well Jeff Baker for a year and i must say it was a very rare treat

  • tubby the tuba got me hooked on 2ba playin'.

  • The new Jupiter C is a good tuba. It plays quite well. I've owned mine for a bit over a year. What custom work was done on the horn?

  • Nice Jupiter CC

  • he was on mr roggers a few weeks agao

  • Phatness, what is it they say; "let the air do the work"?, best exampl of tht I'v ever seen!

  • god, its hard to say nething like tht without snding condescending!

  • This man basically came up with that concept! Ever heard of "The Breathing Gym?" Sam Pilafian and Pat Sheridan are awesome!

  • Go back a generation to Arnold Jacobs. And yes, two former students of his, Pat and Sam, are AWESOME!

The Breathing Gym is one of the best brass instructional aids of all time.

  • While sam and pat are sweet the breathing completely inefficient, inaccurate, and impractical for all except those with no prior experience in breathing

  • I beg to differ. These guys studied from Arnold Jacobs. Jake was able to provide respiratory therapy for people that doctors couldn't provide because he understood the respiratory system better than the doctors did. Pat and Sam teach the same stuff the same way- the way it should be taught from day one.

  • While I think Sam and Pat are amazing musicians, that only tells you about the lackluster capabilities of the doctors, not really the musicians.

Anyways; Breathing completely inefficient: Do you even play an instrumet?

  • Yes, I am a tubist. I was a former principal tubist with Auburn Univ Bands, a former member of the faculty quintet there, and studied with one of Sam's doctoral students. Won the solo contest at AU three times as a nonmajor. I find it remarkable that the principles taught by these two are even brought into question considering they begat the majority of orchestral brass players in the US. Go listen to old Chicago Symphony recordings if you don't understand who Jake was.

  • "no prior experience in breathing"

Do you have any experience in breathing? If breathing had anything to do with playing the tuba fish could do it...

    with their gills.

  • Very good tone Mr.Pilafan

  • understatement of the year.
