"A Separation" is the Iranian entry in the Foreign Language Film race and has pretty much swept the Best Foreign Language Film awards. It's not some obscure film nobody saw and Asghar Farhadi isn't some beloved writer. I've seen it too. It's a devastating, intense drama. One of the best, classiest nominations that the Academy has ever done.
Agree with most of video. Probably Clooney will win best actor; he deserved it and oscar is usually similar to the globes. I would rant on about how sh*t the oscars are this year (because they are) but it's pointless. Last year, my abhorrence towards the oscars grew to new heights when Fincher didn't win for best director - i had given up on the oscars. Lets face it, awards don't mean shit anymore (with some exceptions)
And yes, just have 5 CATEGORIES FOR BEST PICTURE. WHY 6-10? POINTLESS.
I COMPLETELY agree with you about Bridesmaids. The only reason that movie is getting recognition is to prove that women can be funny too. I found that movie to be totally forced and unfunny. I've seen plenty of movies with all female casts that were much funnier than Bridesmaids. And I thought Melissa McCarthy was the worst part of the movie
they should get rid of the songs completely, most of the time they have nothing to do with the movie and are just tacked onto the end credits. they may as well have an award for best poster or marketing campaign.
Picture-worst nominees in years. I'm content with Moneyball, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, and Tree of Life. War Horse(zzzzzz), Descendants(Payne fan, but I don't see the fuss bout this), Artist(admired more than enjoyed), Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close(easy oscar bait, poor reviews, and another overrated Stephen Daldry flick). Haven't seen The Help.
Actor-Glad Oldman got in. Inspired choice. No Fassbender or Michael Shannon. At least Dicaprio didn't get in. Great actor, but his work was meh.
I really hope Lubezki wins. He's deserved an Oscar for a while now. He lost for Children Of Men? Craziness! Hah I completely agree about Bridesmaid's...what the hell?! I saw The Artist the other day and it put a big smile on my face. I'm not sure I'd pick it as the best but at the same time I'm not sure I have a problem with it winning. I'll be doing a video on this in the future and will post as a video response. Great predictions!
Actress-No Charlize Theron? Probably cause her character was unlikable. Shame. It's best work. No Tilda Swinton for We Need To Talk About Kevin? No Elizabeth Olsen for Martha Marcy May Marlene? What a boring conservative category this year aside from Mara. Davis will win.
Director-Fine with this. Would have been nice if Bennett Miller got in for Moneyball. Scorsese could pull a win. A split? Maybe Artist wins picture, while Scorsese wins director. No Refn nomination....so sad. Good for Malick
Screenplay- I wish it was Moneyball because I had my problems with The Descendants screenplay, but its one of those two. Midnight in Paris vs. The Artist. Shame Young Adult and 50/50 got left out in favor of Bridesmaids(enjoyable, flawed. Needs tightening). The woman aspect is pushing it.
Supporting Actress
Probably Octavia Spencer. Poor category this year.
Supporting Actor
No Albert Brooks?! This is Plummer's. No inspired Andy Serkis nomination. One of the Apatow gang finally got a nom.
actually, "tinker tailor soldier spy" had TWO nominations if you count Gary Oldman's nomination for best actor. just thought i'd let you know.
