It has a 20mm cannon off to the right of the cockpit.. Of course it has a cover over it when not in use, same as the weapons bays below.

Killazer: missiles can be depleted very quickly and the radar is harmless. A machine gun is the last resort of fighter pilotness and can do both A-A and A-G.

But I must say - This aircraft is just excellent. Lockheed Martin gets an A+ again. Hats Off!

The F-22 will not replace the F-15. For one they are just too plain expensive to be produced in the numbers that the f-15 were.

use some common sense, if the gen 4 f-15 is old and just alittle out dated, why would you need the same numbers of jets w/ the f-22? you wouldn't the idea is to replace them w/ the better more effective raptor. lastly, we didn't entirely phase any of our planes until almost twenty or so years after the release of our new types like the f-14 vs. the f-4.

The JSF is designed to hit ground targets as well. Hence the name Joint Strike Fighter. F-22s are strictly air superiority fighters.

Actually, the F-22 has a strike component, although that's not what it's optimized for. Being stealthy and fast is useful for some missions.

I'm taking my wife, daughter & her friends to see the Blue Angels this saturday in Sacramento. Last year we saw the Thunderbirds & they showed off the F-22 Raptor in flight but I wasn't as impressed. They didn't fly it for very long & I felt that the F-18's (we saw with the Blue Angels before also last year) kicked more serious ass than the F-22 when flown. If you could take an F-15 & make it stealthy & hide the bombs on the interior, nothing could touch it! I've seen the 15's also & they ROCK!

Re: X3RX3S72- Hasn't anybody ever heard of inspecting the airframes on military jets? I guess that's what happens when you put amatuers in charge of business that needs to be taken care of! That wouldn't have happened had they done inspections on parts of the planes that are put through massive stresses. It's NOT the planes fault but the fault of those who don't do their jobs!

Umm...

Not too many access panels on these birds. Plus any high-performance high-stress machine, be it aircraft or manufacturing equipment, tend to fail without prior indications of defects and catastrophically. You could inspect every 10 seconds and it wouldn't help. Just goes with the territory of machines that kick-butt.

Actually, back when I was a truck driver (1992), I delivered an x-ray machine to "Rocket Center, West Virginia" for the navy. I asked them what it was for and they told my co-driver and I that it was used for inspecting for stress cracks in the wings of F-15's. So, I KNOW that they have the equipment to inspect, they just overlooked these planes because they probably thought these war birds are indestructable. Now they know that they are not. They do have the tech, they just underestimated.

America won't even consider exporting the F-22, and even so, most nations considering the F-35 can only afford dozens and they will be the 'export package' and won't be near as stealthy among other things. The U.S Marines alone will have more F-35's than all other nations combined with a couple hundred, the U.S Navy will have almost 500, and the U.S Airforce will have almost 1,000. The main importer of the F-35 will be Britain, purchasing around 130 F-35's as a country. Thats the difference.

F-35 is the shit, but we can't say for sure yet tho.. Norway is considering to purchase the F-35 A-type, but the F-35 is one of three possible candidates. Anyhow, the F-22 is today the best fighter aircraft, as it has the best k/d ratio and its maneuverability is better than any others'. But of course, the F-35 can be even better, or not. It still remains to see.

The F-22 has NO k/d ratio because it has never seen combat. BUT, it is superior to the F-35 in every way except in terms of manufacturing. Essentially, the F-22 is designed to open the door for the F-35's to do their thing. The F-22 is faster, stealthier, more maneuverable, has better radar/weapons systems and is more advanced in every way. And rightfully so, it costs twice as much as an F-35. The F-35 is easier to build, cheaper and will be exported.

I love the F-22, but what's the point in having the thrust vectoring really? I understand, yeah, so it can out manuever the enemy in a dogfight, but the plane has the best stealth technology so no one is gonna see it. Plus it's gonna take out any target from miles away. Cool feature though.

the f-22 has thrust vectoring so it will outmanuver any other aircraft, thrust vectoring allows the plane to turn on its axis insted of doing a high G turn. peace...

I definitely agree on the leadership thing...I guess my point was that the thrust vectoring is more a neat feature....I highly doubt in actual combat pilots would need to use it (since it's got stealth and a radar that can detect enemy aircraft 125-150 miles away (perhaps even more).

I'm pretty sure that it's top speed is much higher than that. Originally they said it's top speed was subsonic lol. Since we know it can super cruise (cruise over Mach 1 without afterburners), it's top speed has to be at least up around Mach 2.

1000 kts is not spectacular. I believe when the air force first made the specifcations for the advanced tactical fighter, they wanted it to be able to excede mach 3. That was when the USSR was still around though. 1000kts is around mach 1.5, so you do the math man.
