Interesting that you titled the video Vintage Trolleys. For some strange reason, I've heard them called "trains" in San Francisco. The MUNI employees call them that and the public seems to have picked up on it.
When those very same PCC cars operated in Philadelphia, they were trolley cars. Now they're "trains"..... I've actually heard operators on a crowded car call out, "Take next train". So now the public calls them that too.
excellent video, I was there in '87, rode the yellow Oporto single-trucker many many times, my favourite, and because it has the loudest tram music [gearings and motors in Brill 21E truck]. What happened it it today?
Nice to see some of the old cars from Phila..PCC..The powers that be declared our fleet of about 200 PCC and pewtar cars obsolite and useless in 1992. In 2005 Septa( southeast penna trans authority spent 80 million to restore 15...
great video love to see more trolley videos from san francisco. septa should of rebuilt all 200 and kept them running 15 more years. these trolleys are great.
I was born in Philly and my fondest childhood memories are of the trolleys and the Red Arrow Line (I even wrote a song by that name). I used to spend hours at the Broadview Road/Beverly hills station watching them come over the trestle...
I like this. That silver pcc reminds me of septa pcc 2728

Considering that most of the PCCs in this vid are single-ended, can anyone tell me why they are fitted with a second trolley pole at the front end?
Brisbane lost its trams for good in 1969, but we have a working museum on the western edge of town.

These PCCs are originally SEPTA cars that were scheduled for the scrap yard.
Instead, SF Muni bought them and sent them to Brookville Equipment Company in North Central PA for rehab.
The old accelerator drums, contactors, relays and current sensors were removed and replaced by 21st century DC/AC inverters and traction equipment.
As a tribute to old times, each car was repainted in the livery colors of every major American city that used PCCs.

It has potential, but it is still not to par in terms of frequency. Both MUNI and BART run routes once every 20 minutes which is unacceptable.

Wondeful. I grew up riding the PCC streetcar in Toronto and it was a thrill riding one again in SF.

In most jurisdictions it is important that streetcars in San Francisco require both a bell and a horn or a whistle in some sort is that right?

Not sure. But sounds right.

For a streetcar lover, it's like Disneyland! Especially since they extended the F line around the Embarcadero to Fisherman's Wharf.

I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please check out mine on some 1930's motor car tobacco cards.
