I agree with the logic she proposed. It was a surprise when women aligned with sexist events by basing their judgment on race rather than sex. They celebrated when the verdict showed O.J. Simpson not guilty. Also, I agree with her point that the media managed to alter people's views from being a male against female violence case to a racial one.

What I should've typed was "most Black journalists/ public figures condemn anyone who challenges Obama's actions & motives." People always make the excuse that he's dealing with residue from Bush. But, the same powers that were puppeteering Bush are still present. Just because Obama is Black doesn't mean that they went away. JFK getting murdered was proof that a president can choose (at their own risk.

People who sided with OJ did so because of how racist the LAPD and the media are. I remember being the only one in my predominantly black/hispanic inner city school who did not jump and cheer once the verdict was announced on the PA. Afterwards, everyone admitted they thought he was guilty.

Feminism and/or patriarchy had little to do with that. However, the fact that people were willing to overlook OJ's obvious guilt shows how far the U.S. still has to go re: racism as well as sexism.

@binhthanhvo : The point bell hooks is making is that the defense had to make O.J look like a victim of a system that is racist , playing on historical stereotypes that white men fear Black men destroying white female virtue. The real point of the case that was overlooked was domestic abuse in favor of making OJ look victimized instead of Nicole.

We all support murder of some kind yes: capital punishment, war, suicide, euthanasia, abortion so we must be honest and dialogue over those things that divide us and keep us from moving forward as people. We are all enslaved by capitalism which mask itself as homophobia, racism, sexism, classism, agism, and the ugly goes on. I'm grateful for her reflections on the OJ case. I am one of the countless blacks who was preoccupied with the racial element of the case and didn't really care too much about the patriarchal aspect. This entire series, really, has been very helpful. I find that what she refers to earlier as meaningful agency, which she states is greatly hampered in black students, is impaired even more precisely BECAUSE of blacks preoccupation with racism. From now on, I intend to broaden my perspective. Thanks

@JuliusGray I agree. Black men continue to uphold patriarchy when it is patriarchal institutions that perpetuate racism in the first place. Black men continue to cry out against racism but have no problem with upholding violence and oppression of women.

Patriarchy triumphs regardless of race. When we evaluate the stories of OJ Simpson, Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill, Jesse Jacson or Bill Cosby these men are found innocent by both brothers and sisters before the story is even told.
