I agree with the logic she proposed. It was a surprise when women aligned with sexist events by basing their judgment on race rather than sex. They celebrated when the verdict showed O.J. Simpson not guilty. Also, I agree with her point that the media managed to alter people's views from being a male against female violence case to a racial one.
That was quite a blanket generalization, wasn't it?
What I should've typed was "most Black journalists/ public figures condemn anyone who challenges Obama's actions & motives." People always make the excuse that he's dealing with residue from Bush. But, the same powers that were puppeteering Bush are still present. Just because Obama is Black doesn't mean that they went away. JFK getting murdered was proof that a president can choose (at their own risk.
watching this a second time, her words hit much more. the first time it cracked my intellectual shell quite a bit but now, exactly what she is saying penetrates all the way through.
People who sided with OJ did so because of how racist the LAPD and the media are. I remember being the only one in my predominantly black/hispanic inner city school who did not jump and cheer once the verdict was announced on the PA. Afterwards, everyone admitted they thought he was guilty.
Feminism and/or patriarchy had little to do with that. However, the fact that people were willing to overlook OJ's obvious guilt shows how far the U.S. still has to go re: racism as well as sexism.
@binhthanhvo : The point bell hooks is making is that the defense had to make O.J look like a victim of a system that is racist , playing on historical stereotypes that white men fear Black men destroying white female virtue. The real point of the case that was overlooked was domestic abuse in favor of making OJ look victimized instead of Nicole.
i see what she's saying and agree with certain parts, but if she really is claiming to look at this from a multi-faceted standpoint, then she must bring up the issue of race.....
@JahariKavi Are you upset when men who kill their wives don't get away with murder? If you don't, you're a hypocrite. Either way, how fucked up are you?
wow many gr8 comments here. We all support murder of some kind yes: capital punishment, war, suicide, euthanasia, abortion so we must be honest and dialogue over those things that divide us and keep us from moving forward as people. We are all enslaved by capitalism which mask itself as homophobia, racism, sexism, classism, agism, and the ugly goes on. We are getting planned like cheap violins and we dance like the puppets we are. Wake up! We must wake up and fight the brainwashing.
I'm grateful for her reflections on the OJ case. I am one of the countless blacks who was preoccupied with the racial element of the case and didn't really care too much about the patriarchal aspect. This entire series, really, has been very helpful. I find that what she refers to earlier as meaningful agency, which she states is greatly hampered in black students, is impaired even more precisely BECAUSE of blacks preoccupation with racism. From now on, I intend to broaden my perspective. Thanks
Patriarchy is the root of all evil. Im glad I found this conversation. One of the things that stands in the way of Blacks eliminating anti-Black racism is their continual perpetuation of patriarchy. Black men, as a group, don't challenge white male capitalist patriarchy because they are too busy trying to hold on to their own patriarchal privilege...
@JuliusGray I agree. Black men continue to uphold patriarchy when it is patriarchal institutions that perpetuate racism in the first place. Black men continue to cry out against racism but have no problem with upholding violence and oppression of women.
@JuliusGray I see that happening with this Frat that im interested in. It out right has patriarchy as the driven force in it's sister group and these smart beautiful women play the rule in the interest of a more romanticism but I wonder wouldn't be better if they was equals in stature. I think that relationship is more healthy for rebuilding the community they serve.
Patriarchy triumphs regardless of race. When we evaluate the stories of OJ Simpson, Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill, Jesse Jacson or Bill Cosby these men are found innocent by both brothers and sisters before the story is even told.
Dear fritzmom--I am sure she is against abortion--abortion from the womb of intellect. An intellectual abortus is easy pickings for the system of domination which she describes, because such a one easily becomes victim or perpetrator without reflection or reference.

With her being a feminist, I bet she is really for abortion which is just flat out wrong. That doesn't make you an icon or hero, makes you a person who condones murder!!! If she's not for abortion, then my statement doesn't hold water.
as a part of the human race, we all condone murder one way or another. Are you pro-military? Are you pro-war? Conservatives condemn abortion, but use a particular language to euphemise the killing of men, women, and children all over the world.

The problem is we're ALL hypnotized by the entertaining spectacle that we see in the media.
The news presents us with a prepared agenda of how they want us to react to something.
Because of the myth that is RACE, racism has been able to control our emotions, and the televised media uses that to manipulate how we think.
Most of us are very easy when it comes to this.
Thats why OBAMA is blindly supported by us Blacks.
We don't question anything about him.

OJ getting off should have nothing to do with what happened to Rodney King. People are blind if they rooted for OJ to get off for killing his wife.
Is racism really that bad where ppl have to rejoice cuz someone of their race got off for murder.

Ha ha! omg OJ. Black ppl dat nigga. Well, now he's out of our hair folks. Guess he got what he had coming to him.
