And what kind of answer is, “...it means what it says”?

Under the law one is not allowed to insult another person; and if it is serious enough, the offended can take legal action. People with ideology & faith identify very personally with it. When you insult their belief, you are insulting personally + insulting their identity + their thought. So it is worse.
Of course one can disagree with any faith/ideology, including Islam & argue his disagreement, with out insults
But some react emtionally, instead of with reason or walk away.

Islamic clerics are constantly arguing over meanings and translations, and these are the people that speak Arabic which, according to many Islamic clerics, is REQUIRED for an accurate understanding of the Qur'an. That being said, if understanding of the Qur'an is impossible outside of the realm of Arabic-speaking people, then it stands to reason a judgment of the religion can be made on the actions of the followers.
