Am i the only one who thinks this song reminds them of the message of Johnny come lately by Steve Earle? I know the boys from RK have played with Steve before, I think this song completely supports the troops but is completely saying that we dont belong in the middle east anymore. God Bless America but God Damn Uncle Sam. These boys are fighting and dying for our country, but you cant even figure out the damn budget? The troops should be paid more than the wigs signing pieces of paper.
Two tour Army veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and I couldn't agree more with this song. It still brings tears to my eyes even after hearing it hundreds of times.
@mjr11474 Right there with you. The content pisses me off, but it's so well-written and the hooks are so great, I love it. That's good songwriting right there.
We just lost a young woman working in intelligence in Middle East---second one from our small town here in Southern Colorado---both really good kids with a bright future----I hate this fucking war.
I have family and friends who were and still are part of the military and they understand the meaning behind this song. If you don't like it, then don't listen to it.
I have found often times those shouting loudest for war are the ones that have never been, and never will go, nor will there children. I agree with most of this song. People are making money off all the dead troops. And for those of you who think being antiwar is unpatriotic...dissent is patriotic! I love my country a lot, and I love my fellow Americans. That is why I am against the War in Iraq. I'm tired of seeing young American boys killed for nothing.
But it IS about politics, and it should be. The Bush gang has that piece of shit, redneck cocksucker Toby Keith crooning his warmonger shit. God Bless Reckless Kelly for writing this song.
You are an A-hole! Over a yr and that fuck obama still has us there-yet you say nothing!! Why is Toby Keith a "redneck cocksucker/? Are you an "asshole cocksucker"? I am a veteran of the first gulf war and I can tell you...Ron Paul is the only answer.
I agree with you. Ron Paul ROCKS! Toby Keith is a "redneck cocksucker" because he's on record as being a complete WARMONGER. Plus, he really IS a "Redneck Cocksucker" in the literal sense. I'm a Libertarian and a complete supporter of the Constitution. We should pull our troops OUT of the Middle East. We have no business there. So, we agree.
You people don't get it...you just don't. These songs are not meant to stir politics...its about the soldier and his sacrifice, not the politics. Yes, politics cause the situations but that's why we create these songs....for at some point to just forget about the "Bush" or "Obama" administration but to be proud of our servicemen. Get off your high horse and stop talking about politics for 2 minutes and just be thankful for our servicemen.
I'm afraid I must ask for clarification. I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at with this comment. What is "the term?" And why are you so adamant about not being called a conservative?
I think this tells the truth. I am an active Republican/Conservative Right Winger, but you know what...........this song is true. This song doesn't seem to be critical of the soldiers, but rather the clowns who send them there, just to pack their wallets. I especially like the Goddamn Uncle Sam. Ask any vet, the government has screwed the American fighting man since day 1. God bless America and God Damn Uncle Sam indeed!
There comes a time in the life of every believer in FREEDOM when one MUST declare without any hesitation to have no attachment to the idea of conservatism.
No, my friend. That is what King Obama stands for. King Obama, and George Dubya, and every president over the last century with the exception of Ronald Reagan.
All you anti-Bush and anti-war people need to ask yourself one question...How many attacks have been made on America since we went to war , not only within the US but on US Navy ships , embassies etc. ? Thats right , NONE ! God Bless the troops and thanks for what you do !
i'm not a mainstream country fan, though i appreciate groups like this that follow its original roots (i.e. hank williams, johnny cash). that said, this song freaking smokes and takes a stance sorely needed by those who call themselves "patriots". only just discovered RK and would like them even w/o this song - but the cojones it took to release this as a TX-based band has catapulted them to exceptional in my eyes. fantastic song, fantastic group. looking forward to more from them.
I agree completely...any other band today wouldn't touch this subject with a 40-foot pole because they'd be afraid their big shot record exec wouldn't like it.
To those who are offended by this song go to RK's page and read up on it. RK is very SUPPORTIVE of the troops in Iraq, they don't support the cause. An anonymous Army captain replied, "I'll never regret signing up to defend our country but I'm not sure that's what I'm doing right now..." That's the way Willy meant it to be interpreted when he wrote it. Rock on RK...God bless the troops.

God Bless those men and women overseas. Yall are the true heroes. ignore what any of those anti war, commie crap saying, liberal, tofu farting faries say. Kick some ass and take care of yourself! my prayers are with yall
I'm a veteran and I'm anti-war. I'm anti-war because of my time in the service. It doesn't mean I'm anti-American or even anti-military. I'm not. You should watch your name calling and the generalizations you make. Some veteran might put your feet in your pockets for you.
It's not anti-war, or anti-troop. It's anti-"making soldiers political prisoners and not letting them do their job." That's what we did in Vietnam, and that's why we lost that war. This song is protesting POINTLESS wars.
You must live in a shack in the middle of Montana with no electricity because the entire world knows how utterly illegal and immoral the Iraq war was. There is NO more debate about this, friend. And being anti-war is not 'Commie.' Communists actually support war. It's about time someone wrote a song about the complete and utter bullshit of King Bush's War which was based on LIES. Have you any idea how IGNORANT you sound spouting this Redneck shit?
You sound about 15 yrs old. "King Bush"? You know this war was overwhelmingly supported by most of congress? Not just Repubs or Dems. It continues to be supported by the Obama admin. If Ron Paul was President we would be out within the next few months. BTW, not sure this is about "King Bush's" war but more about the waste of American lives through war-any war.
If it was "overwhelmingly supported" then why didn't they just vote a 2/3 majority to go to war? It's because there was not a constitutional mandate to do so, dumbass! Yes! 'KING BUSH.' It's appropriate because Bush mandated HIMSELF as 'Sole Decider' to declare war, something NOT legal of the Executive Branch. The same 'King Bush' who had total contempt for the Constitution and used his office to usurp both the Constitution and Bill of Rights. That's what Kings, Dicatators and Tyrants do!
Ah, so you mean like Lincoln, Truman, Kennedy, Carter, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, Bush II and Obama? We haven't declared war since WWII! So all those folks are tyrants! BTW, Lincoln killed 600,000 American soldiers!
BTW, since you state all of those Presidents are "dictators" then you should know that lincoln usurped the constitution to a far, far greater degree than Bush did. Its not even close. If you said these kind of things during the civil war-your azz would be deep ion jail-or on the front lines. And they put up statues for that guy.
I might mention there that Lincoln did NOT start the Civil War. In fact, he did everything in his very limited power to KEEP IT FROM HAPPENING. He did not "usurp the constitution," as its only reference to slavery is that active slave trade would stop after... I think it says 20 years. The reason you would have been in jail during the Civil War for these kinds of statements is because the ENTIRE COUNTRY was a battle zone.
I didnt say he started it but he certainly didnt do "everything in his..power" to stop it. He could have let them go. "You dont want to be in this union anymore, good luck to you". And he usurped the constitution by suspending habeaus corpus, imprisoning political prisoners or arresting anyone who suggested that perhaps the South was correct.
Again, everything was a battle zone. The reason he didn't let them go was because he had a duty to preserve the Union, southern half included.
On the other things there, I'm going to have to do a little reading and research. If you're right and I just made an ass of myself I'll march myself back here and apologize for doing so.
WRONG, son! There WAS NO "union" during Lincoln's time. That was a term coined by the Lincoln administration. We were a Constitutional Republic at the time where each state acted as its own mini-nation, and NOT beholden to any Centralized government. Lincoln's "duty" was to preserve the Constitutional Republic, but he DESTROYED IT instead, usurping the Constitution.
Actually he had no duty to "preserve the union". His duty was "to uphold the constitution". The "union" was a voluntary organization of states that some chose to leave. They were forced back by the US Army at the cannon's mouth. 600,000 dead because of it.
I disagree. There is still plenty to debate about this. Being anti-war is not "Commie," and whoever said that needs to wake up a bit... However, this song is not specifically about Bush's war. By the way, the was on terror was, and still is, overwhelmingly supported, if not by Congress than by the decent people of the world. I agree that going into Iraq wasn't as much of a good idea as it seemed like at the time, but we're there, and we need to finish what we started and get them on their feet.
I never said being "anti- war" was commie. But, No, you are dead wrong about Bush's so called "War on Terror" overwhelmingly supported. That is simply NOT true, and the facts and polls bear this out. Just like his illegal Iraq invasion, his 'War on Terror' was based on a pack of lies and coercion and had NOTHING to do with fighting "terrorism." You simply don't understand the Constitutional illegality and moral degeneracy of the Iraq invasion.
I didn't say being "anti-war" was commie, either. I agreed with you. In reference to the war on terror, that has absolutely nothing to do with anything I said about Iraq. In hindsight, I can agree with you that Iraq was a bad idea (I was in the sixth grade when all of that was happening). However, the Iraq invasion is not and was not a part of the war on terror.
The war on terror was based on us being attacked and thousands of people being killed. Yes, I call that coercion, but not by Bush.
Well, son, you need to make yourself more clear because what you wrote sounded like what I thought you said. The Iraq "War" (INVASION) was not a "bad idea," it was a completely ILLEGAL idea. And, the so called 'War on Terror' was a manifestation of both 9-11 AND the Afghanistan and Iraq Invasions. Bush is TOTALLY, COMPLETELY, and SOLELY responsible for ALL of this. His administration was THE most UNLAWFUL and TRAITOROUS administration in recent memory (maybe all of history, next to Lincoln).
what about during the clinton administration? The Attacks on Waco Texas and Ruby Ridge in Idaho? Wouldn't that be considered traitorous by attacking American civilians? I do agree with you on the Lincoln thing, but to say that were completely in the wrong? I would have to disagree with there. I would recommend the book 'Lone Survivor' by Marcus Lutrell. He was a Navy seal who was the only survivor of a Seal Team in North Eastern afganastan, and he explains because he had a better idea of it
Yes, it would be traitorous...,actually Fascist to attack your own people. By saying you don't think "we" are completely in the wrong, who is "we"? If you mean the Bush Administration then I ask 'why not'? Who else could be held responsible for his irresponsibility? And I'm familiar with Lutrell, but I'll have to say that neither Lutrell, nor the Seals, nor the U.S. should have even been in Afghanistan to begin with, and his "idea" doesn't "explain" anything. He was a tool for invaders.
probably the best song put out in the last 8 years or so. anyone who cannot figure out the line," the brass aint fightin but they're sure as hell takin a stand" does not deserve to listen to r.k.. ;)
this song is nothing but the truth, im goin to iraq in october and for all of you ignorant folks out there this song hits it on the head... this is America, how in the holy hell can any citizen of this great nation be so naieve, im a proud citizen, and service man and if you dont like what me and my boys do, GET THE HELL OUT!!! Canada aint to far away hell neither is mexico n im sure they would love to host your sorry asses... YATFU. USMC
The reason we fight has nothing to do with Bush or the rich..Its about tradition and Its about the guys next to you. I made an oath to defend the Constitution, and I am against the war. As the song says...God Bless America...but God Damn Uncle Sam!
Too bad those who started the war aren't acting on THEIR OATHS to the constitution.
If we start to be invaded by a violent force, I'll stand up and defend our land, no matter my age or arms. Don't be fooled into thinking that bombing a shopping center in a Bagdad suburb in any way protects "our freedom". If anything, the Afghan and Iraq wars have given the people in the MidEast MORE reason to want to see America bombed and bankrupted.
lol. bankrupting us was obl's whole plan. youd think that we, who had helped obl bankrupt soviet in their futile attempt to take over a strong people in afghanistan, would have been a little bit wiser about this whole episode.
You fucking little prick. He's fighting for YOU, you dickwad. He's not fighting to pad anyone's pocketbooks, he's not fighting to make a buck for himself, he's fighting because he has pride in this country, and wants it to be better than it's becoming. So get your head out of your ass for a little while. You might learn something.
On a completely unrelated note, you absolutely love Obama, don't you?
I work as hard as I can at my American job of building bridges for the common public. And when I'm wiping the sweat off my brow and at the end of the day when I throw off my shirt and it hits the ground like a sopping wet towel, it's these songs that I want to open a can of domestic light and cold to and listen. It makes me valid. I praise these guys for writing songs that spark a little thought in all of us. Good or bad. Why do some have to get so serious? Enjoy the art of songs or move on.
when it says the soldiers have blood on their hands its not blaming them, it means they literally have blood on their hands from others. its not against the troops at all, dont be dumb.
if you really listen its not saying that the soldiers dont deserve the medals its talkin about the big wigs deploying more and more toops and getting more and more "American Blood on thier hands" we all support our troops just not so much the cause and the way our leaders went about it. if you read thier statement about it you'd know its one of the best written songs of all time!
yes it actually does. interpretation is everything. and for pessimistic people the lyrics could be portrayed in the wrong way so before you start claiming that these are anti-american lyrics or whatever it is you're claiming be a little more open minded...
BTW, I'm claiming these lyrics to be reckless towards our military, not anti, or pro anything. I think RK should show a little more respect towards those who protect the stage of "freedom of speech" they make a living on by just leaving the military setting off the table.
The US Military is not a "Johnny Doe".
Some will love this song, some will hate it. I wouldn't want to offend any of them but that's just me I guess.
i see what you're saying in a way. but i disagree it to be reckless towards the military. if its reckless towards anyone its the puppetmasters in washington. our soldiers dont make these decisions so it would be like blaming the running back for the coach calling a bad play. the running back just executes what he is told to do. so i disagree with it taking a shot at our soldiers.
There is no doubt where the venim is pointed (the government). However, i used the world reckless not as a pun but as a lack of caution towards our troops. I'm a GWOT Navy Vet myself and I would never write a song about a Soldier in Iraq out of respect for those who are. I can write songs about being out at sea in the Persian Gulf and what we dealt with. EX: A CVN is a ship not a boat. They call it a boat in the song. I doubt they meant disrespect. They just don't know. (it's just ignorance)
I wouldn't say it's ignorance. It's just trying to make the lyrics fit. And never once do they specify that it's about the war we're in now. It could very well be about the Persian Gulf.
On that note, thank you very much for your service.
Diminishing medals like the Silver Star by suggesting that they were for anything other than valor is inappropriate in ANY setting.
A member of the Armed Forces does not look beyond the reason a medal was awarded. Valor is not a lyric, a poem, or a metaphor. It is what it is, extraordinary heroism. By suggesting it was used by the Bush administration for oil is a direct reflection of someone who is not close to what a sacrifice like that entails. It just goes to show, "write what you know".
I think you're a little confused with Willy's lyrics here. "Black gold for Silver Stars" does not mean the soldiers are getting Silver Stars for bringing in oil or anything like that. I believe Willy is trying to point out that our men and women over there are being put in situations that earn them Silver Stars for their actions. Now whether you agree with Willy that we're over there for oil or for democracy is the only place I could see a disagreement.
"...By suggesting it was used (Silver Star valor) by the Bush administration for oil is a direct reflection of someone who is not close to what a sacrifice like that entails. It just goes to show, "write what you know"..."

You simply don't understand the Constitutional illegality and moral degeneracy of the Iraq invasion.
19Truth53 2 years ago
I didn't say being "anti-war" was commie, either. I agreed with you. In reference to the war on terror, that has absolutely nothing to do with anything I said about Iraq. In hindsight, I can agree with you that Iraq was a bad idea (I was in the sixth grade when all of that was happening). However, the Iraq invasion is not and was not a part of the war on terror.
The war on terror was based on us being attacked and thousands of people being killed. Yes, I call that coercion, but not by Bush.
DarogaDaae 2 years ago
Well, son, you need to make yourself more clear because what you wrote sounded like what I thought you said. The Iraq "War" (INVASION) was not a "bad idea," it was a completely ILLEGAL idea. And, the so called 'War on Terror' was a manifestation of both 9-11 AND the Afghanistan and Iraq Invasions. Bush is TOTALLY, COMPLETELY, and SOLELY responsible for ALL of this. His administration was THE most UNLAWFUL and TRAITOROUS administration in recent memory (maybe all of history, next to Lincoln).
19Truth53 2 years ago
what about during the clinton administration? The Attacks on Waco Texas and Ruby Ridge in Idaho? Wouldn't that be considered traitorous by attacking American civilians? I do agree with you on the Lincoln thing, but to say that were completely in the wrong? I would have to disagree with there. I would recommend the book 'Lone Survivor' by Marcus Lutrell. He was a Navy seal who was the only survivor of a Seal Team in North Eastern afganastan, and he explains because he had a better idea of it
Clintonwilsonmusic89 2 years ago
Yes, it would be traitorous...,actually Fascist to attack your own people. By saying you don't think "we" are completely in the wrong, who is "we"? If you mean the Bush Administration then I ask 'why not'? Who else could be held responsible for his irresponsibility? And I'm familiar with Lutrell, but I'll have to say that neither Lutrell, nor the Seals, nor the U.S. should have even been in Afghanistan to begin with, and his "idea" doesn't "explain" anything. He was a tool for invaders.

And yet, Kerry, Clinton and now Obama support all of it. Ron Paul is the only answer!

I can't say I like war, but as long as there are men, there will be wars, so let our men and women in uniform take care of business.

Yeah thanks for fighting for Bush and the rich.

The reason we fight has nothing to do with Bush or the rich..Its about tradition and Its about the guys next to you. I made an oath to defend the Constitution, and I am against the war. As the song says...God Bless America...but God Damn Uncle Sam!
stahlas 3 years ago 3
Too bad those who started the war aren't acting on THEIR OATHS to the constitution.
If we start to be invaded by a violent force, I'll stand up and defend our land, no matter my age or arms. Don't be fooled into thinking that bombing a shopping center in a Bagdad suburb in any way protects "our freedom". If anything, the Afghan and Iraq wars have given the people in the MidEast MORE reason to want to see America bombed and bankrupted.
"God Bless America. God Damn Uncle Sam."

lol. bankrupting us was obl's whole plan. youd think that we, who had helped obl bankrupt soviet in their futile attempt to take over a strong people in afghanistan, would have been a little bit wiser about this whole episode.

Enjoy the art of songs or move on.

when it says the soldiers have blood on their hands its not blaming them, it means they literally have blood on their hands from others. its not against the troops at all, dont be dumb.
slashrose91 3 years ago
if you really listen its not saying that the soldiers dont deserve the medals its talkin about the big wigs deploying more and more toops and getting more and more "American Blood on thier hands" we all support our troops just not so much the cause and the way our leaders went about it. if you read thier statement about it you'd know its one of the best written songs of all time!
orngpwr1414 3 years ago
if i "read thier statement"? wow. does it change the lyrics?
swtjonesy 3 years ago
yes it actually does. interpretation is everything. and for pessimistic people the lyrics could be portrayed in the wrong way so before you start claiming that these are anti-american lyrics or whatever it is you're claiming be a little more open minded...
elksfootball07 3 years ago
I'll pass on the Kool-Aid.
I wouldn't want to offend any of them but that's just me I guess.
swtjonesy 3 years ago
i see what you're saying in a way. but i disagree it to be reckless towards the military. if its reckless towards anyone its the puppetmasters in washington. our soldiers dont make these decisions so it would be like blaming the running back for the coach calling a bad play. the running back just executes what he is told to do. so i disagree with it taking a shot at our soldiers.
elksfootball07 3 years ago
There is no doubt where the venim is pointed (the government). However, i used the world reckless not as a pun but as a lack of caution towards our troops. I'm a GWOT Navy Vet myself and I would never write a song about a Soldier in Iraq out of respect for those who are. I can write songs about being out at sea in the Persian Gulf and what we dealt with. EX: A CVN is a ship not a boat. They call it a boat in the song. I doubt they meant disrespect. They just don't know. (it's just ignorance)
swtjonesy 3 years ago
I wouldn't say it's ignorance. It's just trying to make the lyrics fit. And never once do they specify that it's about the war we're in now. It could very well be about the Persian Gulf.
On that note, thank you very much for your service.

i think you need to take a look at my original comment again.

It just goes to show, "write what you know".
swtjonesy 3 years ago
I think you're a little confused with Willy's lyrics here. "Black gold for Silver Stars" does not mean the soldiers are getting Silver Stars for bringing in oil or anything like that. I believe Willy is trying to point out that our men and women over there are being put in situations that earn them Silver Stars for their actions. Now whether you agree with Willy that we're over there for oil or for democracy is the only place I could see a disagreement.
frioshack 3 years ago
"...By suggesting it was used (Silver Star valor) by the Bush administration for oil is a direct reflection of someone who is not close to what a sacrifice like that entails. It just goes to show, "write what you know"..."
