Nuclear deterence should not use constraining behaviors by using political pressure from a Nobel Peace Prize. Consequentialism may not yield the concrete behaviors desired.

"Working together" - well, their countries are members of the same international union. The decision was made entirely by the committee, though, not as some sort of deal.
I personally think that it was a bad, and grave, choice to give it to Obama, and I wouldn't be surprised if it happened due to a charismatic, persuasive person in the committee being worked up about how it will send out "positive signals". Things can look very different from inside a bubble.

1. Achievement for the preceding year - He became president. Not a huge deal. There were 43 U.S. presidents before him.
2. Fraternity between nations - We are no closer to any other nation now than we were before Obama became president.
3. Reduction in standing armies - Not achieved. And a Nuclear weapon free world is a fool's pipe dream.

My country haven't seen or been in a war since the war in 1814 when one of our former Kings decided to protect Norway from Russia by including our neighbor into our kingdom. Sweden is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government and a highly developed economy. So yes, we are proud of our country. and hey, we do not have people living without a roof or going hungry here.

If you listen to the very interview we are all cued up on here the nobel agent states clearly that it is specifically an award to emphasize impact over the last Year. Desmond Tuttu got it for fighting aphartheid even though that institution did not fall for ten years after he got the award.

The NPP is given for vision and impact. Those men all suffered, true. But suffering is not the only criterion. The whole world has been motivated by Obama's election and that puts him in a unique place in history. And he stepped up to the plate, called for an end to global violence, called out Iran, and put the middle east factions on notice that the time for change is comming. The global community has been greatly affected by these moves. You guys have to broaden your perspective.

Yes this is a republic. A 'democratic republic', i.e. one form of democracy. And it is not liberals who defined this. It was the founding fathers, many of whom were actually fairly conservative. They set it up this way so that no one group could run amuck. This was to protect you and me both. Of course when leaders throw out the constitution then things go awry.
