I saw them in chicago new years 2008-9 and they were actually in really great form. Looked good and really nailed the songs. It was weird, after seeing that performance, why they wouldn't want to try and continue on. Ah well...
@conservatory I missed that one, as well as their Furnace Fest reunion. That won't happen again when they come out to Millennium Park in a couple weeks!
I will pay a really good price and/or trade the UK The Pod single with three songs for the Hum CD/single (Puppets/Aphids) if someone is willing to sell/trade it. I really need it for a "master" collection of every Hum album/single I'm trying for...
@HomebrewMelvin yes they are. a friend of mine randomly found downward is heavenward for 8 bucks in downtown toronto, and i had to order you'd prefer an astronaut from hmv.
Just to let you know, Hum was a 1990s band from Champaign, Ill. Matt Talbott was also in a side band called Honcho Overload, which played at a reunion concert last night here in Champaign. Believe it or not, Honcho Overload may have been just as good as Hum (in my humble opinion!).
I saw Hum live at 1st ave. in MPLS- very cool show- I think this video was made by HARDER FULLER studios out of MPLS- they always reminded me of a more refined version of Poster Children--- a band they were somewhat geographically associated with I believe( I may be wrong but weren't both bands from Champaigne, Illinois?).Downward is Heavenward was by far their best release.
i love hum! they were soo original and hard to point out as a sound but i feel that they shouldnt get back together, not tryin to be an ass im just sayin look at the smashing pumpkins for instance, they were awesome than they got sorta reformed and there new music doesnt compare but on another hand i think seeing how must of todays music sucks hum is probly needed more than ever! i also heard they might be workin on somethin...im not sure go google it or somethin
yeah, they were pretty damn good. i loved the dynamics they showed...one minute they would play the softest and prettiest melodies, the next they would crush you completly...
Hum is amazing, 'downward is heavenward' survives repeated listens like no other... Youtube is in desperate need of live videos for "Isle of the Cheetah", "Ms. Lazarus" and "Apollo".
True that the 2 bands/albums arent similar. I have both tapes. But in no way in Ok Computer the worst album of all time=I . They are both great records in their own right.
This band NEEDS to get back together...granted they will never be able to top Downward Is Heavenward, but it would still be nice to hear some new shit. I heard one of them (the drummer?) moved to Africa or something for charity work...
I've since bought an Ipod so I keep my discs tucked away safe and sound. But this album got used and abuse a few times over. I think it stayed in my car for about 3 months at one point.
if anyone has every questioned Matt Talbott's vision aside from the projects he's played in...go listen to /hopesfall's "The Satellite Years"...it has HUM plastered all over it and was produced by Talbott. Almost like what could've been if they didn't call it quits after Downward is Heavenward...
At least they quit after their best album and not a series of repeatedly weak offerings. Still wish they'd stuck around longer as it seems they were only getting better.
Zenko, you're a fucking idiot, do us a favor and don't waste your breath dumbass ... oh and there were TONS of people at their reunion concerts .. you'd know that if you were there fucktard.
Thanks for posting this video, haven't seen it in years!!
Lamest band ever. All thirteen people who liked them are apparently still around, trying to make us care. So lame they had TWO "reunion" concerts that no one went to. Their favorite pastime when they were together was to talk smack about basically everyone including other bands and their own fans. They cashed their check years ago and gratefully went away for good. Nothing any of them have done since they broke up has mattered. The suckiest.
Zenko is an idiot of the highest caliber. I saw Hum in 92, they are the reason I have tinnitus. They were the loudest band I've ever seen, and one of the best. Tim Lash is a guitar god. I'd like to see Stephen Carpenter from the Deftones do some work with Tim Lash.
Its been a very long time since I've listened to these guys...lol Matt would look cooler if he wore no glasses or if he wore red, cyclops style glasses. lol
another great band from the 90's that has vanished. it saddens me

I guess the music industry didn't push them. Hum was always very underrated in my opinion.
But you're not the only one who knows about them, not by a long shot. =)
