the traditions of this music are like a great broad river made up of the connecting lives of so many many players..it is that each of us has but two ears and so few years to grasp this...here's me bus
Just discovered Harry yesterday..and been posting..listening...posting..etc. Kinda a mix of early Kotke, and Dire Straits...love it. Nice to be my age and discover something new and brilliant!!!
@kariaudar -- MAn, I do too ... The smooth groove fusion of Raga and Blues in the deep soulful mastery of Harry Manx is absolutely rivetting; Just as I am getting into slide blues banjo I 'stumble' onto the amazing performances of Manx on Youtube.
OUT-Standing! What an inspiration. I'm blowed away.
@kariaudar Same here...a haunting type of music. Most think Bollywood Music is the only Indian music.(LOL) Harry Manx is like a present day John Coltrane the way he's fused East with West. Ry Cooder did it also back in the 90s. Derek Trucks is following on with it...keeping the 1969 retro feel going.
Yes, I agree that the world is regrettably ignorant as regards Indian music. Most people outside of India think (as you said) that Bollywood music is the only type of Indian music, and do not even suspect that there exists an absolutely wonderful (and astonishingly profuse) musical universe which is called Indian classical music. (That is not to disparage Bollywood music, which in its heyday (50´s, 60´s and 70´s) was wondrous, but people should broaden their musical horizons.)
@kariaudar Wow, absolutely true. 200% accurate. I'm partly Indian myself (Anglo-Indian) and i play Jazz guitar, have done since 1969. I cant claim to have the patience necessary to listen to huge amounts of Indian music but that's MY problem. The CD "Calcutta Slide Guitar" shows how close the Mohan Vina can sound to Delta Blues.
A very haunting, spooky, CD..similar in places to Blind Willie Johnsons "Dark Is The Night".
anyone know what or who is playing that bass-y type noise over two notes starting halfway through the first beat of the verse riff? neither of them seem to be doing it..
It's a looper. You can hear him set the loop at 1:33. Problem is he does the phrase while the camera is panned on Harry, so you don't see him play it. He plays it real time again at the end of the solo section.
BTW if you don't own a looper, get one! Best thing I ever bought for guitar.
questions about Harry Manx's guitar; He went to India to have it specially made and the artist that put it together for him did it so that it has a Sitar like sound. Harry is involved in Eastern spirituality to a large degree so of course it would flavour his sounds.
It is actually called a Mohan Venna, and no, it was not made for Manx, it was made by Vishwa Mohan Bratt. Manx studied with him and learned how to play it.
Kevin's playing definitely takes a certain taste and time to really appreciate. Very minimalistic, sporattic (sp?). I find it funny because my favorite bands are meshuggah and dillinger escape plan, and his almost "mathematical" approach to his playing makes it easy to throw his music into a play list with the likes of meshuggah and DEP.
thats not a folk guitar, its a special guitar only a couple of people in the world own or can play,i cant rmbr what its called, but look at the special strings and frets, its part sitar

I had the extreme fortune to see both these amazing individuals play in Elmira, Ontario. An amazing show played in an old, hallowed out barn. Got both of them to sign my copy of "In Good We Trust". Completely mind-boggling experience.
Yeah,I'm guessing he might be using an Octave Splitter/ Pitch Transposer to get the lower octave+ a looping pedal..odd how he just brings it in every now & then.Cool effect, tho. man- these two are great together, aren't they? It's so rare you hear a fresh take on the blues.
Manx has the style of N.S. Bhattacharya. A haunting sound reminiscent of Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Is The Night, Cold Is The Ground". It's a lonely sound that comes straight from the soul and melts into the universe.
It's amazing how Delta Blues sounds similar to Indian folk music.
Stevoblues; Yes, i'm part Indian myself and i know how hard it is to play one of these melancholy sounding instruments. Harry actually studied it in India for 5 or 6 yrs...now that's dedication! Harry was featured on a "Talking Blues" episode ('Bravo' Canada channel) He gave a superb interview. Thank you "indieeyes" for this gem.
Harry Manx should record with Leonard Cohen. I would love to see that show!

Harry Manx and Ry Cooder should play together. Ry did a sitar blues record called Ceyleib People in the '60s.

Kevin Breit makes that sound, picking the E string near the bridge I guess.
Sirguda 3 years ago
At first I thought it was a bass pedal, but it could just be put through a loop pedal, as I noticed the note bend.

N-dimensional space, thats what the two guys give each other, young players take note.

What exactly is N-Dimensional space?
kokoro86 3 years ago
Space on several dimensions, musical space and mutual respect:they listen to each other, instead of grandstanding they cross-talk
get it?
