@blueprairie1 Problem is that for the same tuning the Bouzouki and Octave Mandolin/Mandola are pitched at the same octave so it comes down to scale length. At 660mm it has to be a Zouki and at 500mm an Octave Mando. But at a point in between it can get a bit confused. At 585mm it could be named an OM by one manufacturer and a short scale zouk by another. Dave Freshwater from Scotland sells a 610mm scale as an OM. Untill there is a world recognised dividing point it is up to own preference
Tim O'Brien's voice is so mellow and he's a great musician as well. I think it's so cool that Dirk Powell (one of the finest Old Time fiddlers/musicians) is playing bass. What a bunch of talent on that stage. Great song.
" If each mortal could only become a focus of dynamic affection, this benign virus of love would soon pervade the sentimental emotion-stream of humanity to such an extent that all civilization would be encompassed by love, and that would be the realization of the brotherhood of man." - TUB
couldn't agree more. THIS is the song that turned me on to Tim and the one that I requested when I had the chance. He played at least a dozen request that night in Kent, OH. God Bless.
Is that a mandola or an octave mandolin? In any case, it sounds really sweet. Tim O'Brien is one of the most under rated musicians around but he's well respected among musicians.
Oh I agree. I feel like I just discovered him. More, and more love indeed!!. I told my friends about him and they disgustedly said, "We've been talking about him for years, did you listen to the tape?
Ahh, isn't he just amazing ... He played this song when I saw him play in London this year, it was truly emotional. He has such a powerful yet contained voice, and what a musician ... I going to see him again in just over a month, I'm soo looking forward to it !
Yes, it is! Good catch! I heard him before I saw him. Tim and John complement each other so well... this is my favorite incarnation of the O'Brien Band, with the fantastic Casey Dreissen as well.
Tim O'Brien is great(so is Hot Rize) funny venue to see him but this is great!- his sister Mollie and Tim used to play on the streets of Boulder for change- 1977!
This song has got to be one of the best songs ever written. Without doubt, it has made my world a better place. Thank you.

I'm thinking that's an Octave Mandolin. A bouzouki has a scale of 25 1/2", and that doesn't look anywhere that long

Pretty sure that's an octave mandolin and a particularly fine sounding one.
There aren't too many people that can sing as well as Tim O'Brien. What a gift.
