I watched a programme last night on the TV about a handfull of deaf teens and what they do and ona of them got a cochlear implant and it really helped. I wish ur family all the best :)
I don't like cochlear implants because it's pretty much brain surgery. If you're born deaf then you don't feel the loss of not being able to hear. I can understand it for people who have gone deaf. I'm not trying to step on people's toes. It's just how I feel.
i have a appointmnet with hospital about CI if is suitable for me .i have been doing lot reasearch about CI ,it is looking impressive to me and hopefully i get it ,i WANT my hearing back
That is fantastic for him to hear and speak very well ,I was born deaf both ears and am using 2 hearing aids also i can hear and heavily rely on lip reading ,I went to mixed hearing and deaf school .I know what is deaf culture about but i dont want to be part off it.They have lots of negative vibes all time , i did against cochlear implant i put my hand up lol and at the moment i have lost my both hearing yeah gone :( ,so i couldnt cope without sound ,is doing my head in ha ,
I had a deaf friend and when i signed to him I would always say the sentence out loud to so he could read my lips just to make things a bit easier. When I didnt sign to him I would just speak very clearly and he would sign back his response.
yes you can. Neither child hears anything without their cochlear implants-profoundly deaf. When they wake up and put on their "ears" they can hear. When they remove them, silence.
I'm not sure if anyone actually thinks cochlear implants totally correct hearing loss here. I am the mom and I was talking to my child, yes, to get a language sample to show some University students who will be working with kids with hearing loss. He was nor is, mad.
wow they can say their s's. Blast from the past!!!
I am deaf myself, I have one cochlear implant, only one tho. For the other people who are flaming this mother, Do you have a Cochlear implant yourself? if yes do u regret it or dislike your parents for making that choice??
that is amzing!!! how did they teach them how to pronounce words and letters if they can't hear? or did they only teach them after the coclear implantS?
ack 8 generations and none of them have cochlears. It's not a tragedy to be in the deaf community, in fact it's way better than the hearing community and their ignorance. I'm hearing myself so I know the difference between the 2 and Id prefer to be in the deaf community than the hearing.
Putting cochlears on children is child abuse. Instead of being lazy and putting all your money into cochlears. Show your child you care by learning THEIR language first, before forcing them to go through that painful process. More than 50% of my family is deaf going b
Your kids are adorable! I think its great that they have a mother who is giving them all the options, supporting them, and clearly proud of them!
I don't understand why some are freaking about giving a child a CI... it gives a kid more options for later life. It allows the info. from the CI to feel natural. Implanted as an adult, it would take more effort and neverbe natural. The kids can choose to remove it. Shouldn't it be their choice whether they want to speak/hear or use ASL/be fully deaf?
@asldeaffriend Isn't denying a deaf child hearing and speech mean? Having a CI and AVT is reversible, the child can decide to sign or immerse themselves into the 'deaf community' whenever they wish. Not giving the child a chance to develop speech and listening skills is irreversible. They are stuck in the 'deaf world' whether they like it or not, with no choice whatsoever. Now that's wrong in my opinion!

So you instigating that 'I do not understand' because 'I am hearing and therefore selfish' is bullsh*t. I support the deaf culture, but I ALSO support the hearing culture. What's wrong with a child having both? By being both hearing and deaf, they are presented with far more opportunities and choices in what they want to do with their life. From a 'selfish' deaf person.

@asldeaffriend WTF? No one is trying to force a CI on you. Live and let live!
Are you really saying all the hearing should learn ASL so you don't have to get a CI,and they are lazy if they don't? There are hundreds of languages, and it is NO ONE'S responsibility to learn someone else's language. Not hearing or deaf people. It may make things easier if you are around mostly people that speak a different language from your own, and it is always a virtuous thing, but no one has that responsibility.
@asldeaffriend hello, i'm hard of hearing I wear a cochlear implant and i can speak. i think you're wrong about the deaf people that should not speak. just keep talking shit if you want.
@asldeaffriend I can't understand you-please type clearly. I think you are trying to say CI's are wrong because it means the recipient is too lazy to learn ASL? Learning to speak and use a cochlear implant is just as hard as learning ASL! Maybe you are too lazy to learn to speak, if I am using your logic.
You also seem too lazy to type correctly and with grammar.
PS I really hope your not trying to say that all hearing need to learn ASL, and if they don't their lazy... that would be absurd.
my sister is profoundly deaf and got Cochlear implants on both sides and doesn't "sound deaf" either. she also had great speach therapy. it's almost funny because we live in south Louisiana and my brother and I don't have an accect, but she does! haha they sound great.
These children sound completely normal, and are reacting to their mom (?) at a completely normal pace... Cochlear Implants are a miracle, I really don't understand why some deaf people are against it.
Well, that all depends on that person’s opinion. A lot of deaf people are against it because they feel it is causing their beautiful language and culture to deteriorate, and it is! You see, when hearing parents find out their children are deaf, they are devastated and want to make their children hear, hearing for them is natural. For a deaf person, being deaf is natural and sign language is their language, being deaf is NOT at all a disability, it can be seen as a blessing.

@TheSterlingJOe It's unfortunate for you. It's rare for someone to spend hours and hours in one sitting with a therapist. I spent a mere 30-45 minutes, two times a week with my speech therapist from elementary to middle school and I am very fluent. It's all about commitment. You have to want it to find it useful...
@krazykatkitty Not in my case. Many of my friends and my students no longer wear cochlear implant. They put it back in the box. Few still will wear it occasionally. In fact, some decide to get cochlear implant removed.
i born proufuly deaf i wears hearing aids when i was 2 speak not very well i go speech threapy in school n i learned sign my speech quite good not same as hearing people . i cant wear hearing aids anymore i suffer virtigo ear blances.
Hey, I born deaf and wear both hearing aids. I can speak very well and understand what's everyone saying to me. I can read lips. I never attend to a deaf school or stay in deaf community because first time I was there to visited for 5 months straight when I was 10 yrs old and most deaf and hard of hearing can't talk, very few can but the longer they stay there, they're most likely will lose their voice or speech. I rarely use my voice because no one talk to me but signing. You child speak good.
we first tried signing, he HATED it, sorry. just not for him! Actually speech therapy these days if just natural and fun play, they looked forward to going to therapy, 'cause half the time it was at the park! hate to dissapoint you
Who was signing with him? Children most often pick up the attitudes of the adults around them. You should still expose them to Deaf adults and children. You don't know he might change his mind about signing if he is exposed to the right attitudes and people.
there is no Deaf community in my area...and you're right, they do pick up on the positive attitudes they are exposed to. My daughter has an interest in sign but my son says no way.
You must live in a rural area? I moved to a rural area 12 years ago and there is no Deaf community here either, they all seem to be concentrated downstate near the state school. Probably best you don't force anything on him, maybe he will change his mind when he gets older. I hope you can find some resources for your daughter, maybe online dictionaries? Those seem to help me learn. They seem to be doing well so far with hearing and speaking. I'm glad it worked out for them so far :)

So you are proud to have forced these children to undergo grueling speech therapy? You are proud to have let some person force them to speak? You are proud that you choose to take a risk that only the child should have the right to choose? Would it still be worth it if the child's batteries die or if the CI gets destroyed? With out sign lanuguage, the CI is just a crutch. Congratulations for what? Speech therapy isn't remarkable, its cruel. consider their pain as toddlers after surgery.
I am seeing a lot of success with cochlear implants for those implanted as toddlers. The earlier, the better. I had the option of getting one, but I believe you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. However, if my baby was deaf, I'd explore that option. The parents in this case made a wise choice and now their children will have far more options in the future.
@wiggums1 It was what research showed. Now, it is considered myth since new research shows that the "old dog" can learn just like a toddlers does with proper approach.
WHoppeee do!!! it has nothing t o do with our freaking deaf ears.. Some deaf can speak without capable to hear.. So that is full of crapola all along.. I wore hearing aid that doesnt mean anything in a real life. We do not hear their spoken languages with or without devices. CI IS FULL Of SCAM SO BE IT!
@DeafSweetMind CI is not a full of scam motherfucker.. It works great for me. I loveeee it! I can hear people talking shit behind me back. i can catch them just like that and tell them "I heard that and fuck off"
they are both profoundly deaf...but received cochlear implants as toddlers. They had extensive auditory verbal therapy for a year or so and learned how to hear and use spoken language.
And, shouldnt they have COMPLETE access to at least 1 full language? They will depend on their eyes for the rest of their lives, why not give them a language that they were born to use?
@vbnbama what is cochlear implants! through it did they start hearing or they just notice your lips and speak but can't hear what they are saying themselves?
Even though this kid can speak "well" it is RARE. Most deaf children cannot hear speech well with the cochlear implant so they depend on lip reading to get more information. Still they will not recieve 100 percent of the information whereas using sign language you can get across any information you need to accurately. There are pros and cons to both sides, but shouldnt the child decide to undergo surgery or not?
@showtech54 reading the lips, a deaf child can catch 60% of what is on lips while 40% comes from projection of voices. Thus, lip reading today is ineffective practice.
Learn sign language and learn how to use accessibility of interpreter along with Americans with Disabilities Act is key to success.
@TheSterlingJOe Where did you get 60% from? I have 90% accuracy and I think it is super effective! Considering that is around the same accuracy hearing people have when listening.
@TheSterlingJOe Read what carefully? It's clear you said a deaf child has 60% accuracy. You said nothing about yourself. Individual skills varies greatly. Don't assume everyone has 60% accuracy just because of yourself. A wise man once said every person is different.

That's amazing. Can this technique be used for someone who is 100% deaf, or is this boy only partially deaf?

@QuicksilverdotFX Please read careful again. I said lipreading have 60% accuracy. I am living proof of this case as a deaf man.

@TheSterlingJOe Read what carefully? It's clear you said a deaf child has 60% accuracy. You said nothing about yourself. Individual skills varies greatly. Don't assume everyone has 60% accuracy just because of yourself. A wise man once said every person is different.
