Where ever I am and I hear joiking it makes me feel like I am at home. Cause I'm originally from north Finland and my native language is Sámi and now when I quit far away from home I happy that I can find joik and Sámi language song also from YouTube.
Firstly, Native Americans are related to Fenno Ugric people. Unless you want to dispute with genetics. Separated long ago, though.
Secondly, about the nature of joik, it is mainly expressing your feelings and life story, or another's life story, or any story just in unintelligible words. That is the power of joik. It captures the essence instead of the substance. Basic rule of Finnish spellsinging.
well if you want to go with the genetics thing TECHNICALLY we are all pretty related and seperated long ago. Homo Sapien evolved in southern Africa and then migrated north and out from there. So yeah Native Americans and Finno Ugric aswell as EVERYONE ELSE
its not that old of a split as the beginning. but if you look at the older pictures of the Sami people and pictures of the Inuit from Canada you can see a resemblance. even without genetics you can tell
thanks^^ I know that it's the "first" beer song but where is the Song? I mean on which Album did you find it? I have Shamaniac and Idja and it's not on them^^
Helppo to go with the flow heh & video is cool too or should I say hot.
Sama rytmi kuin laulussa, jota päiväkodissa joskus laulettiin 'kanootin kapean vesille työnsin, seuraan nyt majavaa vaeltavaa. Kultaa ja hopeaa melassa välkkyy, hauen ja... (kohta jota en muista)... Saaliiksi sain"
I totally disagree. This kind of song is called the "yoik" and is a sort of a tribal/spiritual form of singing/dancing. Just because you can't understand it, it doesn't mean it's ugly or poor in lyrics/rhythm. To the contrary, it's actually quite deep and rich in rhythm and other things.
Unfortunately I'll have to say that you're pretty narrow-minded, my friend. I think you'd rather listen to Britney Spears and all those crappy "creative" shit than pure spiritual music.
Jonne Järvelä must have real balls to bring us this form of unknown music. And I'm definitely happy that he risked his own balls to show this exotic music to the whole world. I must say that if it wasn't for him, I'd never heard of it. So, I'm not going to let people like you blow it up. Sorry.
If you didn't mean it then I must apologize, but let I make this clear to all those who share this antagonism with Shaman's music.
A yoik is not merely a description; it attempts to capture its subject in its entirety: it's like a holographic, multi-dimensional living image, a replica, not just a flat photograph or simple visual memory. It is not about something, it is that something. It does not begin and it does not end. A yoik does not need to have words — its narrative is in its power, it can tell a life story in song.
The yoik is the folk music of the Sámi people. A yoik can tell of the past and the future, with a range of subjects as wide as the life of the singer. A yoik can be about animals, people, places, feelings, hopes and. The traditional yoik are usually about people — smirking, admiring, pitying, proposing marriage and seducing. One type of yoik is called the luohti.
Is the chanting he's doing in this video a form of joiking, or is it something different? I've recently become interested in joiking, so any exposure to it is great. I love Shaman. Their sound is in some ways, better than korpiklaani's.
Yes, on the video you may listen Jonne doing the yoiking. The first two albums (Idja, Shamaniac) were made in this yoiking style and the songs written in Sami language.
The Sami people live nowadays in north of Norway, Sweden and parts of Finland. They were never conquered by the vikings and their culture differ a little bit from the viking one. So, this is video is not a viking/celtic folk metal whatsoever, it's "pure folk" or even "heathen yoiking metal".
Indeed this is a great song. You can buy Shamaniac and Idja album from their shop. and go on shop section on their homepage. the prices are great. also you can always ask Jonne to sign it for you. Got all of his CD's signed. Good luck finding Hunka lunka CD. I was lucky enough to find it on Ebay. He even hadnt seens it for years until I got him to sign it for me also on the shamaniac CD you have the odda mailbmi video and this video too :)

So first is Kanõhta Lávla.
This is original Cd from Korpiklaani shop! So...
You maby want to listen Jonne Järvelä & Maaren Aikio's Band called Shamaani Duo : Hunka Lunka (1996) that is trad.Sámi yoik music and one of my favourites! if so,send me post.
"Kanohta Lávlla" is just a little part of the song "Mu Sieddi Beales Mun Gottan" The hole song is almost 18 minutes long, and are divided into three parts:
1: "Kanohta Lávlla"
2: "Althasta" and
3: "Mun Sieiddi Beales Mun Gottan"
Therefor the name of this part of the song is "Kanohta Lávlla".
I really don't know Saami language so I cannot tell for sure. But I blieve that "Mu Sieiddi Beales Mun Gottan" is a poutpourri/medley version of "Kanohta Lávlla".
Anyway, the Korpiklaani Official Forum has the download link for this video and there the file is called "Kanohta Lávlla"
hmm...ok...i don't want to argue but this is beginning of "Mu Sieiddi Beales Mun Gottan"...and Lavlla associates to me with last song on Shamaniac "Voulla Lavlla"...
2 points:
1. How did I miss this one? I thought I had heard all of the songs.
2. Johnne looks good in red hair.

Well, by the time Shaman/Korpiklaani did this song they weren't so "heavy metal", perhaps a bit of "folk rock" or just folk.
