By the way, you are playing it too fast. You will get the proper sound by slowing down when the mallet starts 'jumping' against the edge and the bowl begins to produce a rattling noise. V interesting video :)

Same trick is done with a drinking glass by whetting your finger and circling the rim until it "sings." Nothing special about the Tibetan bowls.
