Jeez, some of you guys kill the fun of this FUNNY satire of a benign hymn. Python was fun (if occasionally thought provoking), some of you blokes seem to have a stick up your arse!
As an atheist, I agree with the poster Bithiuge, who is a Christian. Although I happen not to believe in God, I reject the idea that suffering disproves the existence of God.
Of course, I also reject the fundamentalist claim that there was literally no death before Adam & Eve ate the apple -- as though God's Plan was that killer whales would just sustain themselves by nibbling on seaweed, until mankind sinned, and then orcas were "allowed" to gobble up delicious seals and penguins!
But then you do have to force them to admit "my God made an imperfect creation, and is the cause for cancer, vomit, dog shit, malaria etc.". I know few Christians who actually admit that their God, while claiming he made everything, also designed malaria and vomit etc.
@SSTTEEAALLTTHH I thought their easy answer to everything was "it's a test" or at least one of God's "mysterious ways." But even the Christians don't seem to buy that one wholeheartedly ^^
I never said I am privileged or wise. I never said I have been handed wonderful secrets. What I said was indeed the opposite - I am human and therefore admit that I know nothing. I cannot see the grander picture and neither can any of us. I trust in my God that everything happens for a reason and for good - we are blind to the true purpose of events and that includes me. At no point have I claimed to know the purpose of things, I have simply offered my belief.
Just to let you know, as Christians we don't go "oh no, Monty Python wrote a song which shows God made stuff we think of as bad" - quite the opposite. I'm a Christian and a Python fan and I love this song because it is so true. What you have to remember is, these creations aren't 'shit' - they're all needed and they're all amazing. As nasty as various animals can seem, they serve a purpose - just as we (arguably the most horrible things in creation) have a purpose.
as horrible as they are, we can never see the bigger picture. I'm not for one minute going to say that cancer of any sort (leukemia or otherwise) are 'good things' because they are not. But when you consider the overwhelming overpopulation we would have without disease, without natural disasters, it puts things in perspective. yes, they are horrible, yes they are horrific and yes they can destroy lives (not only victims, but their families too) but everything happens for a reason
@Bithuige Yes, I'm just so grateful for disease and disaster. It's so wonderful that so many people's lives are destroyed to save us from the horrors of potential overpopulation. Praise the lord.
We can't even look after the humans we have on the planet already - we kill, maim, enslave, rape and torture in more ways than I care to imagine. As a species, we have caused more harm to our own species and to nigh on all other creatures through our actions (directly or indirectly) so I'd say that the occasional culling of a few of us probably helps prevent us ruining this planet forever. yes, on a personal scale they are devastating, on a larger scale, they probably help the planet!
Christians go on and on about the ''mighty one'' If he was so amazing then why would he allow poor innocent babies to die of cancer? Random people get knocked over by cars? Our ''god'' has no compassion, and if he does exist..then he is an idiot. End of.
There coulndt possibly have been a theist amongst those who sang this song - it´s quite hilarious though :). I wonder how they managed to get through it without laughing. But I suppose after about the 100th take it stops being quite as funny.
Yes, indeed, it is true..."15 See that none render evil for evil to any man; but ever follow that which is good towards each other, and towards all men. 16 Always rejoice. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 In all things give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you all. " 1 Thessalonians Some of the most difficult words to live by, but there they are big as life in Scripture. Ewelamb wears her St. Francis medal when she deigns to wear a collar at all. Cats!!
I actually looked for "All Things Bright and Beautiful" first, but most of the videos there had the wrong tune, so I came here instead, realizing that "Dull and Ugly" has only ever had one tune—and these words are better anyway! So I think we all owe those Python people a big thanks for keeping the real music alive and well on YouTube.
Imagine if they did play that on national TV today. Millions throughout the Bible Belt would gasp in unison, causing untold casualties due to the sudden and catastrophic drop in air pressure.
Here are the lyrics if you want them: All things dull and ugly, All creatures short and squat, All things rude and nasty, The Lord God made the lot. Each little snake that poisons, Each little wasp that stings, He made their brutish venom. He made their horrid wings. All things sick and cancerous, All evil great and small, All things foul and dangerous, The Lord God made them all.

Please can we have a comment about the satirical humour of this song... All this philosophical twaddle is making my head hurt.

One of my favourite "hymns." We should tip our hats to the bad things too, because they're just as much a part of creation as the good.
starsquid 1 year ago
Most creationists just say "Well they are only bad because people are bad and satan is bad"
Which is of course flawed before it starts because no animal is truly bad, they are just surviving.
