I hate the korean/japanese stuff aswell, my parents had a samsung fridge freezer that lasted 12 hours- its compressor had burnt up. This had replaced a 12 year old admiral that had been running perfectly ever since but they wanted to get rid of it cause it didnt go with the kitchen!!!!!! lol
the best way to learn is hands on and a great idea to pick up scrap units and see how it works

LG POS Compressor was the culprit in this one you should cut it open good to see how it would have failed

Sounds like the start winding may have shorted prior to becoming an open.
