  • @packrat556 can you use this stove as a wood stove?

  • Thanks for sharing this very informative video! I really enjoyed it.

  • its raaa-men not raymen

  • Make some beef jerky with your dehydrator and toss that in some time. Half a pack of ramen, couple strips of home made jerky, and some wild greens makes a great beef stew out on the trail.

  • I tested an esbit stove and fuel block but did not get this hot. water did not boil and the flame didn't look half as big as what you showed here. Any ideas what went wrong?

  • hexamine is the same type of stove we use it in the irish army reserve

  • Good job on this review. Very informative.

  • Where can I get a (US made) canteen set?

  • Some nice food. You can do a meat version of this using beef flavor noodles and hot dogs. Cheap and simple to make. I've got some camping food videos on my channel as well. Worth a look.

  • I'm sooooo hungry :o

  • Is this Cleveland?

  • I used to buy the esbit fuel blocks, but now i use military style gel packets, a lot cheaper *40p for 1 here* and they burn a bit longer as well, and as far as i can see have not damaged the stove

  • thats sucks i paid 1695 for mine and six cubes on ebay

  • Thanks for sharing. The tuna noodles will be perfect on my boat! I don't backpack but sail a very small sailboat and camp out on it. I'm adding this meal to my repertoire of easy foods.

  • I have one of these and I use it alot. I love it. Great vid. Thanks Charles

  • Does anyone know if you are allowed to take the fuel cubes on a plane in your check-in bag? I am making a trip to CO in a few weeks and would like to try the esbit on this trip.

  • @Fj4LiFe23 NO!

  • Thanks for this review. I just ordered an Esbit stove today. I use the tablets and love them. I use them in my BCB Crusader Cookset. Anthony.

  • Hey I was wondering if the Esbit left residue on the bottom of your pot.

    Thanks

  • they have heat up canned meals that cook themselves in 12 minutes

  • I'm impressed. This beats the freeze dry food all the time. Also not as expensive either. Thank you so much for the greatideas you have and that you are willing to share.

  • I Love this Video now. I bought a Used esbit stove becuz of this Video. How much trioxane do u use i Used what the Package said wich was 1/3 of the bar and it didnt Even boil Water

  • you could also do chicken flavor with the tyson chicken packs

  • great idea of the fire starter!!!never thought of that but now it is obviouse.THANKS!!!

  • how do you put out the fuel?

  • @outdoorsman310 it goes out in about 13-14 mins.... I think pouring water on it would work.

  • Great video. Definitely the most extensive review of the esbit I have ssen thus far. I didn't realize it was so versatile. I am a die hard DIY alcohol stove enthusiast but this video has me wanting one of these noww.

  • This is the most extensive review of the esbit I have seen thus far. Great video. I am an alcohol stove enthusiast but may just have to pick one of these up.

  • awesome !!!!

  • I'd have you on my team when the zombie apocalypse breaks out. ;) subbed. nice channel!

  • Hey I was wondering if the esbit stove leaves an ugly mark afterwards?

    ~Toast

  • Did you use the whole ramen packet? Most people gripe that ramen is too salty. And they say ramen has no food value.

  • @gijr2003 ramen has a food value, if it didnt my cousin would have starved to death pretty much because that is all he ate for like a year

  • Pretty handy device. I may have to get one before summer.

  • i like watching ur vids. i have same stove. can u tell me can u burn twigs in it use it as wood burning stove? also, how do u put tab out to save it 4 later? thx karen

  • Great video. I am just getting into BOBs so thank for the review

  • Love your videos man! i didn't even realize i could put the cubes in the stove itself. i tried to put it out with water i don't think it works guess you gotta just blow it out eh?

  • That some fishy soup. A pot is better than a canteen cup. A pot weghs about the same as a canteen cup. Esbit smells bad burning. If I was backpacking in desert area I would use canteen cup in order to carry maximum water. Always get real Esbit stove and not imitation Chinese stove. Esbit stove so light it can fit in pocket. I bought a used and a new Esbit stove and they should last a lifetime.

  • That looks so delicious!

  • I have a question, please. You said you lit the fuel cube by using a fire steel and some tender, if I'm not mistaken. I'm confused. I thought you could just strike right to the fuel cube and it would ignite. Why is tender necessary? Thx.

  • @generic53 it is to help you to start a fire but u don't need to use tender

  • @ALLSTARS2016 .....Didn't the vid say, though, that he used TENDER and a fire steel to light the fuel cube???

  • where can i get one of those ESBIT stoves at??

  • @ALLSTARS2016 shit any camping store will have one. and i mean any

  • @THEHUNTER096 will u don't have the fucken say shit ok i was just asking

  • Can't wait to use mine when i go to my next WW2 reenactment! GO ESBIT!

  • Cool Vid. I use an Esbit pocket stove as part of my survival kit. Best thing about it is that you can simply push it in your back pocket (fuel included). And if you run out of tablets it's still functional as a balanced pot stand in the centre of a fire if needs be. Just to mention here - if your British and having trouble finding Esbit, i got mine at a website called Cadet Direct for £5. Enjoy your vids dude, keep em coming.

  • Thanks for the review.

Please don't put plastic in boiling water. It's not good for you.

  • i have this chili flavored ramen noodles and your video made me want some so now i am making some right now

  • hey, i was just wondering if those esibt tablets evaporated one you take them out of the package

  • i went and got this stove from my local academy and when i went to go show it to my mom in the hospital, i left it on the roof of my car. needless to say, it got runover a few times and was as flat as a pancake, except where the fuel tab was that i had stored in the stove. because of this, i was able to bang it back into shape and it still works!!! only thing is that one of the rivets that are the hinges, tore the steel and it only opens to the low or first setting... oh well. i got a new one.

  • now i craving ramen. oh well.

  • I have to say i tried your idea with the ramen and tuna, i have to say that came out very well. This has become my favorite hiking lunch and meal idea. I recently tried the chicken flavor ramen, with the tuna flavored with lemon and pepper.

  • Nice vid, I need to pick one of those stoves up and teach my son to use one out in the field

  • I want to thank you very much for having took the time for we simple folk so we'd know what to get and where to get it. It all appears fairly cheap except that water purifier. I watched all your videos.

That's the one that has me concerned. Know of a place that has those for cheaper then 60 bucks. I live on a shoe string budget. Are sleeping bags out now ? lol I still have my feather military issued one when my father was in the military. thanks for all the great advice..

  • I really like your videos. Thank you. Keep up the good work!

  • @VanceMarks I agree. Great videos. Just wish he would tell us where he gets some of his gear. I am new to all this and would love to find out the best places to get some of this stuff.

  • @Nubster12 a great place to start is campmor, they have a web site, also rei or sports challet campmor is tax free and great selection/prices.

  • @Nubster12 try your local army surplus look it up in the phone book

  • a good video

  • Were did you get it?

  • why not chopsticks?

  • packrat556 wered u buy the stove for that cheap

  • Over here that's called a hexi stove. The British Army use them and they're popular with cadets and such.

  • I would like crush the ramens and put like 2 bags of them in to a zip lock bag so u get more stuff in a smaller package...ummm...yea

  • What is that OD pouch in the top left?

  • yes u all right and this beautifull tool is developed in good old germany!!!!

  • where can you get the ESBIT stove at

  • Great video PackRat556! You really have some great ideas to share and you do a great job of demonstrating this type of stuff. I've carried and often used the Esbit stove in the outdoors for a couple decades. They work great but I always advise folks to bring some type of windscreen along with this type of stove. A windscreen can easily be fashioned from a disposable aluminum pie crust pan, a piece of flashing, or even just a couple layers of foil. That goes for all outdoor stoves really.

  • Just a thought--you could use one half of a losenge tin with gel fuel set inside the Esbit as well.

  • Another fuel you can use is a cotton ball dunked in wax..it will burn like an esbit cube and is cheaper..

  • @NorthShore0 Okay, so how long would your cotton ball creation actually burn - perhaps a whole minute at the most? That wouldn't be enough to boil a canteen cup even halfway full of room temperature water, believe me.

Besides esbit cubes and trioxane bars, the only other really cheap fuel that I know of for boiling water in the field is HEET gas line antifreeze, but you'll need an alcohol jet burner stove for this. Such stoves can be made from common beverage cans or cat food tins.

  • @blanckepi i have boiled my canteen cup full of water with a cotton ball soaked in wax...i will make a vid on it when i get a camera..check out collinoutdoors video on wax cotton balls..

  • @TheFreerunlife Cool, I can hardly wait to see how that will work out. Seeing is believing.

  • what is the proper name for the cup that you used to boil the water in?

  • @element7422 The cup looks just like one that I have, which was officially designated by the US military as the M-1910 canteen cup. The handle folds underneath the cup for storage, which was the old style of canteen cup. The newer style of canteen cups have wire handles which fold out from the cup like butterfly wings.

  • @blanckepi ok thanks i apreciate it

  • Mmmm! Looks yummy! I'm going to try this. I just got an Esbit stove and I can't wait to try it out. It looks like it works really well. When you use it outside, I suppose you use a windscreen - do you know how high the windscreen should be? Thanks for a great video!

  • Can the ESBIT stove support a 1-Liter SIGG water bottle?

  • im gona buy this for my german ww2 impression:]

  • i wish i had a vacuum sealer it makes it so easy to put together meals

  • i tried this with my east german folding stove and east german mess kit, and surprisingly it was really good. i dont even love tuna but thats a great recipe im gonna remember this for my next camping trip, fun to do at home too,

thanks for making this vid, really cool

  • after you get ur water to boil is the stove hot to touch?

  • if i can bring water to a rolling boil i can thermos cook. that saves me energy!

  • A video about a crazy stove and you don´t show teh little magic fuel rock ! shame on you...

  • that doesn't look half bad to eat in your house but when you have been backpacking or been in the wilderness for 3 days that would be amazing

  • Great video! I just bought an Esbit stove because of its light weight and because I don't really like carrying liquid fuel. As most of my backpacking is done in spring, summer, and fall, this stove will work great. Thanks for this video, PackRat - I'm glad to see my little stove will work well. I just do freezer bag cooking, so I think this will be a perfect setup. Happy Trails!

  • good stove I want one :) that meal looked nice as normal but as we all know when you are outdoors that would look and taste 100x nicer lol

  • how can you put out the cube? water or other element?

  • Is it steel or aluminum?? Any idea on the weight?

  • where do you guys get these canteen cups at?

  • @SPCkeith you can get them in camping/sports stores or military surplus stores

  • Hey PackRat,

Like the idea about the vacuum seal. Would not have even thought of it, but now I am intrigued by it. I figure just about anything can be sealed up with it, and it saves space along with adding some strength to the food pack so it wont get crushed. Thanks.

  • were do you get the great deals from

  • @manhip a great website is camping survival but packrat gets better deal not sure where he gets his deal hope this helps

  • Great shopper~!!! How are you finding many good deals ? ;-)

  • The hexamine tablets are made for the civilian version of the British Army Hexamine Stove, which is basicly a larger Esbit Stove that measures roughly 4'x5'x1'.

Much larger than the esbit but much more stable for larger pots, and cheaper here in the UK due to the Hexamine Stoves being british army issue and the Esbit Stoves being German Army Issue.

  • Hi Packrat great vid as always just a hint to allwatching this one i have had to use this in Esbit stove in outside conditions and it will take easily 2 Esbit cubes to get a real rolling boil if you just need to warm water use one if you really need boiling you will use 2 and if any wind you will want to use a wind blocker

  • now that I've seen all nutnfancy's vids I'm starting to love all your vids more!

  • Great video. Ramen noodles is your favorite? You must be rich! Poor people hate them since we Have to eat them all the time. Keep up the good work.

  • theres other things the ramen noodles you know....

  • gr8 vids packrat!!!

over in the uk noboby has really thought about bobs and shtf scenarios, but I always have a go bag by my door just in case.

we have a similar stove for the army called a hexy cooker. Almost identical to you esbit stove.

I think their great and idiot proof.

    keep up the good work

  • Hey Packrat, try this one if you already havent. One packet of Ramen Beef Flavored noodles, half a package of JackLInks Teriyaki Beef Jerky and some dried veggies.High in sodium, but there are worse ways to die.

  • yeah, good vids... liked your cooking-advices, will try it later in the year when visiting norway with my kayak. please keep on the good work!

  • Excellent video Packrat !!!! and good combo for shrimp and tuna.I also like the Chicken Ramen and the packets of white meat chicken from Swanson. Thanks!, for these cool videos.

  • Very good video Thank you.

  • vid like yours is what youtubes good for. thanks

  • One thing I would do is maybe do demonstrations like this on a table in the middle of a room and have the camera pointing at you with the demonstration happening in the middle..

That way you wouldn't get in the way by mistake.. :)

Hope you take this into consideration..

  • Hey Packrat ! Excellent video series! You should make DVDs. Audio and video is good quality. Thanks!

  • esbits work good w/ tea lights candles for a camp lantern ... trying to boil some water w/ a tea light ... not working great but just another thing you can do.. also you could go real ghetto and just use and altoid tin and make a stand for your pot

  • what cooker is better Esbit or Gelert ???

  • i used one of those they suck the stand start to bent due to the heat.and if you use in windy condition forget it. i use the fuel only i as kindle only.

  • I can see big profits for the Esbit company following this video......

  • interesting, i might get me one of those, saw it in a camping shop earlier but i imagined the flame to be a whole lot smaller

  • Man you dont have prattle on?

  • Dang this guy eats good he put like a pound of veggies in that soup

  • @MrDARKReaction with good enough ramen, u cant really taste the veggies

  • thats awesome, i never even knew about those little stoves til i saw this lol, im so buying one now lol

  • I just got back from my Canadian air Cadet Survival Instructors Course, and I bought something every similar to this. But after only two uses, it became all rusted and corroded. Do you have the same problem with this stove?

  • I am going to REI to get one of these stoves!!

  • Outstanding Info.........

  • can't believe you wouldn't show yourself lighting the stove. That would probably be one of the most interesting things about watching this video (about the stove). I'd prefer to see that than to see you cook. LOL. Why would you skip all of that (prep and light the stove)????????

  • @ldmak90 Isn't the the most simple and kind of un-needed use of time. i mean you literally just light it with a match or spark. But the main point of the vid is how he cooks with the stove. As titled how to COOK with the Esbit. So the focus is on ingredients and what he uses, not the self-explanatory stuff like how to unfold the stove and light the cube. it's like saying explaining how to breath, you know the diaphram moves downward, expanding the lungs, blah blah, blah, etc. But its simple.

  • where could you get one of the stoves

  • how do you put it out

  • water

  • Nicely done vid; thanks for taking the time to do it. You're a great teacher.

  • Great video's mate! :)

  • ESBIT cubes are just hexamine ;)

there is no diference between the roll and the Esbit ;)

  • Hiya. The hexi stove is exactly the same. Esbit just appears to be a brand name. I have a British hexamine stove, army/civilian issue, the only difference are the blocks are not quartered.

  • Instead of using the cubes, could you just light a fire on the base plate?

  • Comment removed

  • I lived by myself in a hotel for a while and let me tell you I have made many Ramen Noodle "casseroles" LOL Great demo of the ESBIT stove

  • I have a vacuum sealer but does the tuna ever go bad when you vacuum seal it?

  • The TUNA was prevacuum sealed in a foil pack from the manufacturer. It is the Walmart "Great Value" brand. I'm sure tuna would spoil if you vacuum sealed it AND didn't freeze it.

I tried those Shrimp Noodles at work last week by themselves. I have to say, it was beyond NASTY. Pack I had might have been really old but still, it will be awhile before I try them again!

    Good Video.

  • i absolutly love that combo of food. i just add some dehydrated vegies. it is awesome tasty and light.

  • this is my faverite video of yours very well done its in my favs.

  • Thank you, I am glad!

  • in my bag that holds me food is 2 ramen noodle packs

pasta sides alfreado broccoli and a romano cheese sauce some cheetos =P salt pepper a spork from kfc and a can of hash

  • Smart to save the spork package from eating out, I do this too.

  • @PackRat556 i went all out and got a lmf spork, there indestructable!

  • cant u jsut get noodle cups and put them in a ziplock bag because it already has corn peas and carrots that stuff in it then u could add some shrimp and tuna while its cooking!

  • Sure. I would recommend the vacuum sealer if you were going to store it for extended periods. I repackage food like this all the time. Thanks for watching!

  • The cup-o'-noodles can also have some small chunks of beef in them.

  • when i dont want to wait long just break open packet holding chicken flavored ramen noodles and pour the packet in there shake it well and it is really spiced well but also edible

  • Without Boiling?

  • yea i eat them "raw" if u wanna call it

me and my friend loves it

  • Great tutorials. I am building a 72 hour survival/evasion LBE setup, a BoB, and a camping backpack with tent, sleeping bag etc.

I am taking your advice and getting a dehydrator and shrink wrapper and by the way those lipton rice bags are awesome.

I am really thankful that you and others share your knowledge. I am going to do video once I get everything together. There's hope for this city boy yet.

  • Sounds Awesome! Good luck on your project and congratulations on making some wise investments! I appreciate your interest and support of my channel. Please let me know if I can help you further.

  • looks like the canteen cup could move or shift if touched wrong... not very sturdy.. i prefer the canteen cup and stand.....please respond

  • It may appear that way, but actually, I have had no problems with this. I am careful with it and have not spilled anything using this method.

  • Sweet meal. I usually crush the noodles while they are in the pack before I put them in the water so maybe if I crush them before I put them in the backpack or seal them I could save a bit of space, it may not be enough space to matter though.

  • I also break mine apart before cooking. The only reason I didn't break them first is because when broken, the noodles can sometimes be sharp and can puncture the vacuum pack. This would probably be rare. Give it a try, it may work just fine. Thanks for your interest and support!

  • Which would you recommend the homemade mre's or military issued ones? I have a friend in military that is most likely gonna be able to get me free MRE's so just wondering on what you think.

  • Free MRE's! Don't pass that up. With that said, if your supplier falls short, you can use my method as a backup.

  • Kk thanks!

  • Very helpful video. I'm going to the Download rock festival in a few weeks and they have banned gas stoves so i'll be using one of these. Will make this recipie too! i love tuna XD.

Hexamine stoves are used by the British army and are virtually identical to the one in the video. Apparently Trioxane is better than hexamine though so i'll try and find some

  • im going 2 download too they seem to be quite cheap on ebay!! :)

  • Exellent :) also going to Download. Will deffo be investing in one of these.

  • Download for me too. Already got my stove.

  • Good luck with it! Hope the festival goes well! Take Care.

  • @felneymike Army surplus stores are the best places to buy trioxane fuel tablets. At least this is true in most parts of the USA. I don't know about anywhere else.

  • Thanks for the video! I was trying to find out if I should buy one, now I bought it! Hope it works as great for me as it does for you.

  • I hope so as well. I am sure you will be very satisfied with your purchase. Thanks for watching.

  • how u vacuum seel it?

  • after watching this video I bought one of those aluminum canteen cups. Its great!

can't believe they're not standard issue.

  • They are a great design and make the standard 1 quart canteen a much more attractive option w/ the cover. For the US forces, these cups are used by many. Thanks for watching and hope you continue to enjoy that cup!

  • Thanks for taking the time to make this.

I have a few english army stoves like this but they also have a holder for the alluminium water bottle cup which sits ontop of the stove- which means its less likely to fall off during wind or small knocks.A nice extra but I guess if its that windy, you probably wont be able to light it anway! :)

  • I appreciate your interest. If the wind is high, you can try to improvise a windscreen from foil or from logs or another available material. I would like to see that English version of this stove, I am not sure I have before. Thanks for sharing.

  • We have those in the military over here in Denmark but it's a little bigger it is an awsome stove and it's lightwight

  • I agree, it is well worth its minimal weight and space. Thanks for watching!

  • on my list for the 1 week kit great vid. thanks

  • Thanks for watching!

  • Great video! keep 'em coming.

These are the standard issue emergency stove of the Norwegian Defense.

Small piece of advice though, put some folded up tin foil in there for extra wind protection if needed. Just wrap it around if its windy.
